to think my sister was a bit insensitive Re Holiday

Dp was made redundant towards the end of last year. We had booked a holiday prior to this but not paid the full balance. Dp is still out of work, the balance needs paying next week so we have decided we will have to cancel it. We will loose the 800 non refundable deposit.

My sister rang me after hearing about it and asked if they can pay the outstanding balance and have the holiday.

So am I being UR to think she is being a bit insensitive cheeky or is she being wise since we will be losing the money anyway?

That is cheeky. So she gets a cheap holiday and you get nothing. Could you not ask the travel agency to carry the money forward to a holiday next year. I think it would be fair if she offered to pay at least half of the 800.

NachoAddict · 09/02/2014 19:50

I will definitely update tomorrow as soon as I have an answer.

Thanks for all the help. Came on feeling sorry for myself and now there's a chance we wont lose our money.

Keeping everything crossed for you Nacho. hopefully they can help in some way. If not bargain with your sister!!

Chippednailvarnish · 09/02/2014 20:00

Hoping you can defer it too!

Creamycoolerwithcream · 09/02/2014 20:00

I think you could change it to the cheapest weeks self catering holiday they do and then pay the 50 pp admin charge.

NachoAddict · 09/02/2014 20:02

Thanks everyone Smile

I don't think First Choice do self catering holidays anymore. They might do a weekend break over new year maybe or a week out of season. Here's hoping anyway.

Good luck with the transfer OP.

One take home message for anyone reading this thread is ALWAYS BUY TRAVEL INSURANCE IMMEDIATELY! Do not wait until the week before you travel, because there are all sorts of things that could crop up between booking and travelling that you'd want to have covered.

NachoAddict · 09/02/2014 20:17

That's definitely a lesson I have learnt the hard way. Hope everyone else realises that too and books insurance straight away.

Thomson and first choice are the same company and Thomson do self catering.

plantsitter · 09/02/2014 20:24

Ask her if she'll pay the balance so YOU can go. It's about the same level of cheeky and is pretty much what she's asking of you.

Will they transfer the deposit from a first choice to a Thompson? I know they are the same company but wasn't sure they would be so accommodating.

I hope you get a good result.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 09/02/2014 20:37

I hope you can work this out so you get a holiday or your money back. And I think your sister is being beyond cheeky - she should pay you at least 50% of the deposit and any costs involved in transferring the holiday to their names.

Chippednailvarnish · 09/02/2014 20:39

Sorry if I am stating the obvious but have you tried searching for any holiday on the same dates you wanted to see if anything can be transferred to within the £800 you have already put down?

There appear to be charges to transfer, but it seems such a shame to miss out on going away (and I would be asking you sister to lend you the transfer fee)...

CocktailQueen · 09/02/2014 20:40

Good luck!!

If you get no joy from first choice, could you ebay the holiday??

I'd Rather do that than let my grasping sister benefit from our misfortune! Cheeky madam.

Chippednailvarnish · 09/02/2014 20:44

Great idea - ebay it!

roadwalker · 09/02/2014 20:45

Hope they come up with something for you OP
Is your sister OK financially?

TiredFeet · 09/02/2014 20:45

Really hope you manage to find a way to not lose out!

Your sister was being monstrously insensitive, it would be different if she had offered to pay part of the deposit back to you as well though

marmitecat · 09/02/2014 20:49

I hope you get it sorted out - fingers crossed

shewhowines · 09/02/2014 20:50

It depends on how they asked and their financial position. If I knew there was no way they could afford it otherwise, then I would be happy that my sister could benefit from the circumstances.
If they were fairly well off then I would be disappointed if they didn't suggest something that was mutually beneficial.
If they suggested it tentatively then I would love them to have it, if they asked expecting it, then no.

Depends on your relationship really. I would rather my family benefit than everyone loses out.

Hope you can change it or get the money back though.

Creamycoolerwithcream · 09/02/2014 20:54

Nacho, three weeks ago I transferred a First choicevholiday to a Thomson Cruise and stay holiday. You really need to check it out as you may be able to find a cheap self catering holiday for not much more than the 800 you have paid. Do you have a ref. You may be able to go online press ' my booking' on first choice or Thomson and change it that way if not call tomorrow. Good luck. Love your name by the way.

undertheduvet · 09/02/2014 20:56

we transfered a holiday from thomson to first choice with no problems.had to pay the admin fee though but we did completely change the holiday dates destination and child ages

NachoAddict · 09/02/2014 20:58

I am super hopeful now searching holidays like a crazy woman.

Will be back to update tomorrow Grin

Fingers crossed - we had exactly the same problem last year, but a job turned up just in time. I'm hoping the same thing happens to you!
