to think my sister was a bit insensitive Re Holiday

Dp was made redundant towards the end of last year. We had booked a holiday prior to this but not paid the full balance. Dp is still out of work, the balance needs paying next week so we have decided we will have to cancel it. We will loose the 800 non refundable deposit.

My sister rang me after hearing about it and asked if they can pay the outstanding balance and have the holiday.

So am I being UR to think she is being a bit insensitive cheeky or is she being wise since we will be losing the money anyway?

EnglishGirl How do you transfer the holiday to next year? If that is possible we could do that.

Rachy we booked online too so ruled out on three counts Sad but at least lots of people are now aware of it.

Try to defer.

BeJesus · 09/02/2014 19:15

FIRST CHOICE redundancy policy Sad it doesn't look like you would be covered as you have to notify them and send them all the paperwork within 7 days. I am not expert though so worth double checking.

Whity74 · 09/02/2014 19:17

Saves it going to waste. Although the decent thing to do would be to offer you something at least for losing the £800 deposit. Even £50 would be a nice gesture!

500internalerror · 09/02/2014 19:19

What's the balance left to pay? Not that it hflps; I'm just curious to see what percentage she's saving herself!

supadupapupascupa · 09/02/2014 19:19

she is a bit cheeky, but to be honest if it was my sister i would think it was a fab idea! Why shouldn't someone you love benefit? Better than wasting it.....

Lj8893 · 09/02/2014 19:20

Check with first choice weather they would let you defer for a year or change your holiday to something cheaper.

I've deferred a holiday twice but with different companies.

Go in and speak to someone, they will hopefully be able to give you some help and advice.

Hissy · 09/02/2014 19:20

Do you have travel insurance? I'm appalled by your sister's behaviour, i'd have fucking lent you the balance if you were a sister of mine.

GlaikitFizzog · 09/02/2014 19:20

It's worth contactng First choice see what they can do, they might be able to do something.

rachyconks · 09/02/2014 19:21

£50pp admin fees to transfer the holiday. You won't be able to do that though if your balance is due before the 24th April (as 2015 isn't on sale until then). You can transfer to winter 14/15 though. The admin fees are payable at the time of transferring.

expatinscotland · 09/02/2014 19:21

Wouldn't the decent thing to do be to loan her money to go?

rachyconks · 09/02/2014 19:22

Changing to something cheaper could work too, but you are still liable for the £50pp admin charges.

coolcookie · 09/02/2014 19:22

She should pay half the 800 at least.

Will defo look into deferring the holiday. FINGERS CROSSED!!

Left to pay is 1600. We have most of the balance but didn't pay it because we didn't want to lose even more money. Glad we didn't now.

I'd have laughed at her.

£800 is enough for a week in Normandy with Keycamp/Eurocamp during May halfterm. I would ask to see if you can transfer to something cheaper.

ThenAgain · 09/02/2014 19:25

Would your holiday insurance cover it, or something on the credit card you purchased it on?

rachyconks · 09/02/2014 19:29

They've stopped that coconutty. You have to pay the admin charges regardless now. You should be able to change the holiday yourself online OP and pay the charges too by going into manage my booking.

NachoAddict · 09/02/2014 19:32

We haven't got insurance yet, I usually book it just before we go. That's one lesson learnt. I booked via debit card not credit card.

I will ring first choice tomorrow and see if there is anything we can do in regards to transferring it to something next year or something cheaper this year.

If its a choice between losing it altogether or sister having it then they can have it but I will suggest she pays some of the deposit.

NachoAddict · 09/02/2014 19:35

Thanks Rachy I will definitely look into it all tomorrow, my booking ref is on my work computer.

I did look at manage my booking to change the date but because we squeezed it in before ds's 2nd birthday we couldn't cross that age barrier online. I will give them a call.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 09/02/2014 19:39

Try to change it to something cheaper to offset the admin fee. It will need to be another Tui group mainstream holiday, they won't let you change to Jet2, Eurocamp etc. as its the operator you owe not the agent iyswim. Best thing to do is look for another holiday online yourself, then call and ask what it will cost to change.

Please don't lose your money. I'm a travel agent and really hate seeing people lose money when there are other options :)

Hissy · 09/02/2014 19:43

Please let us know? Everything crossed for you lovey!

honestpointofview · 09/02/2014 19:46

Hi Nacho

I also looked at the T&c's and whilst they seemed to have extended the offer i can not see them offering it beyond 2012. You can however at least ask and see what they say. Nothing to lose!
