To ask if any of you have had a reaction to Quorn?

Enticed by Mo and seeing it was a good source if protein, my dh went and bought lots of Quorn.

Interested to know what replaced the meat, I googled it only to find warnings about how unwell people have become after eating it!

Do not fancy it much now but realistically has anyone fallen ill after eating Quorn other than trumping loads from the protein?

Ate quorn for the first time a couple of weeks ago, was violently sick, and ended up with swollen lips, tongue, and a massive rash.

Not touching it again.

Chesntoots · 08/02/2014 18:25

It gives me The Bloat...and the shits.

mewkins · 08/02/2014 18:25

Dh gets violently ill after eating it. Apparently it's quite a common allergy. He isn't allergic to wheat etc usually.

LadyMaryLikesCake · 08/02/2014 18:25

Maybe if it hasn't made you ill before it means you're OK, Rooners??

Ds doesn't have any other food allergies or intolerances and I don't react to it. I won't buy it now though (I think I bought it last time as a vegie friend was coming for supper).

LittleBabySqueakSqueak · 08/02/2014 18:25

No problems with it here.

gamerchick · 08/02/2014 18:25

well at least it's good for a good clean out Grin

LadyMaryLikesCake · 08/02/2014 18:26

Ummm…

fedupfedup · 08/02/2014 18:27

I love Quorn.

I've never known or heard of anyone getting an adverse reaction. Quite the opposite in fact, my dh who gas Chrohns disease finds it easier to digest than meat.

goodtimesinbontemps · 08/02/2014 18:28

Ds2 gets dreadful diarrhoea if he eats quorn. He was vegetarian for a while and it took us a few dinners to realise he would be on the toilet all evening if he ate ut. When I did a bit of research it turns out its not uncommon apparently.

Rooners · 08/02/2014 18:29

Yes, I appear to be fortunate so far! However I don't want to puch my luck.

I'm a bit concerned that it doesn't make me ill tbh - what does that say about my digestive system's standards Grin

LEMmingaround · 08/02/2014 18:30

Anaphylactic shock type reaction - i don't remember much, but i was blue lighted to hospital and looked like a goldfish. Plus it tastes of nothing

FatimaLovesBread · 08/02/2014 18:30

It's not closer to mould, it is a mould. Well mycoprotein from the mould Fusarium venenatum typically.
Moulds and mushrooms are fungi.

Never tried it and not been tempted to with my ibs.

LEMmingaround · 08/02/2014 18:32

Rooners you'll be fine :) If you were gong to react to it, you would have done so by now.

TidyDancer · 08/02/2014 18:47

It's very tasty stuff, but we limit it in our house as we eat quite cleanly most of the time and it is processed. But it is lovely and never known anyone with an adverse reaction to it.

MitMopse · 08/02/2014 18:53

YES!!! Projectile vomiting around 4 hours after eating it every time. Vile stuff in my opinion!

LadyMaryLikesCake · 08/02/2014 19:00

It's not as vile as tofu. It's like eating slime.

HesterShaw · 08/02/2014 19:03

Crispy tofu is delicious though.

TheDetective · 08/02/2014 19:07

I eat it, and don't have any sort of reaction.

No one I know has reacted to it.

I've been eating it for 20 years.

However when I started eating meat after 15 years as a vegetarian, I had all the symptoms described above, and was very ill (as in I felt very ill) lots of D&V etc. It took around 10 times of eating meat to finally have no reaction at all. After 3/4 times the reaction wasn't as severe, but I still got the awful stomach cramps.

I tried red meat last year for the first time and got the same reaction like I'd had when I first tried meat.

I think it's just how your digestive system reacts to something 'new'.

TheDetective · 08/02/2014 19:08

I love crispy deepfried tofu. From the chinese. Tis the bees knees Grin.

squoosh · 08/02/2014 19:10

Hmmm, I think all the allergic reactions described go beyond a mere reaction to something 'new'. It's an allergy to the fungus mould.

TheDetective · 08/02/2014 19:18

Some maybe, not all.

squoosh · 08/02/2014 19:19

Most.

Tulip26 · 08/02/2014 19:21

I've been eating it for decades, no problem. If you want a cheaper veggie mince try the Neil's Yard stuff from Holland and Barratt. Stick it in some hot water with a stock cube. It's vegan and wheat free too.

LucyLasticBand · 08/02/2014 19:22

stomach cramps here too, and i just dont get allergic reactions to anythign. or reactions.

i did try it a few times but it wasnt that cheap;
and if you are veggie I reckon lentils are the future.

giraffesCantMakeResolutions · 08/02/2014 19:22

my quorn issues started over time. I used to be able to eat it fine and now i can't.

I am a veggie.
