To ask if any of you have had a reaction to Quorn?

Enticed by Mo and seeing it was a good source if protein, my dh went and bought lots of Quorn.

Interested to know what replaced the meat, I googled it only to find warnings about how unwell people have become after eating it!

Do not fancy it much now but realistically has anyone fallen ill after eating Quorn other than trumping loads from the protein?

We recently published a study in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology on the adverse reactions that about 2,000 people suffered after eating Quorn. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=jacobson+mf%2C+deporter+j A boy in California and a girl in Sweden apparently died as a result of an anaphylactic reaction after eating Quorn.

An earlier telephone survey found that about 4% of UK residents who had eaten Quorn experienced adverse reactions.

As part of a legal settlement with the maker of Quorn, we got the company to provide slightly more prominent allergy notices on packages in the USA, but not elsewhere. The company also agreed to remove some of the puffery on product labels.

Neither the US nor the UK government has shown interest in banning Quorn or requiring bold warning labels on packages.

Mumsnet users who experienced an adverse reaction after eating Quorn could file a report at cspinet.org/eating-healthy/foods-avoid/quorn.

Thought it tasted nice but gave me diarrhoea on both occasions that I used it. So it's a "No" from me.

Excited101 · 05/12/2018 16:00

Oh wow! I never knew people had particular problems with it, I never have.

Alfie190 · 05/12/2018 16:08

Yes I have had it twice in my life and have twice ended up with vomiting and a very unhappy stomach. An unusually high proportion of people are intolerant to it compared to the proportion of people intolerant to other food stuffs. It used to be banned in Australia.

This is a zombie thread but anyway...

last and only time I ate it, both DH and I had severe tummy upsets- throwing up for hours on end. He had a flight to catch and somehow made the trip. It was over 20 years ago and we vowed never to eat it again.

Cramps, gas, painful indigestion. Sort of glad it’s not just me!

Juanbablo · 05/12/2018 16:29

I eat it and have no ill effects.

spongebunnyfatpants · 05/12/2018 21:51

I used to eat loads of it, especially the mince, but now it gives me violent stomach ache. 😩

Swann612 · 06/12/2018 16:25

My husband has a severe allergy to Quorn and he is fine eating mushrooms, eggs, wheat, etc - no other known allergies. We initially didn’t realise it was Quorn that was making him sick and each time he had it he was getting worse with prolonged periods of violent sickness

Had a severe reaction to eating Quorn chicken style pieces last night - burning and pulsating under the skin, loads of hives 😱 Anyone get anything similar?

Spent the last year eating it weekly and no problems then got fed up with it so didn't eat it for a few months. Went back to cooking with it recently and each time I've had bad stomach cramps and wind. Goes on for several hours. Sad
