To ask if any of you have had a reaction to Quorn?

Enticed by Mo and seeing it was a good source if protein, my dh went and bought lots of Quorn.

Interested to know what replaced the meat, I googled it only to find warnings about how unwell people have become after eating it!

Do not fancy it much now but realistically has anyone fallen ill after eating Quorn other than trumping loads from the protein?

Horrible stuff. I prefer a rare steak.

Lagoonablue · 08/02/2014 19:25

Wind

DH has a really violent reaction to Quorn, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, chills for a good 24 hours after eating it.

He'd been ok with Quorn for years as his ex was a vegetarian, then suddenly, he wasn't. His vegetarian DB has tried to slip it in on occasion not believing it can cause a problem. Imbecile. You wouldn't give nuts to a nut allergy sufferer so why is this ok?

Anyway, it's a dirty mould and I can't believe they try to market it as a healthy food. The allergic reactions are very well dcumented and all over the internet. The DCs aren't allowed it and I won't eat it seeing what it can do to people.

HavantGuard · 08/02/2014 20:22

I'd eaten it for a while without any issues before I started reacting to it. I was veggie at the time and had been for 4+ years. I also love edamame beans and tofu and have no problems with eggs or mushrooms. It's just Quorn that causes me extremely painful cramps that leave me in bed for 24 hours.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 08/02/2014 20:35

I've eaten it at least once a week for over 20 years with no problems

IamInvisible · 08/02/2014 20:35

I am convinced it makes my mother I'll, but she won't have it that it is the Quorn. Every fortnight or so, she gets vomiting and the shits, always after the Quorn but according to her "it's a bug!"Hmm. She almost missed my Gran's funeral because of it.

She has had the GP giving her tests but won't give up the -fucking crap-- Quorn! I've told my Dad as well but he won't listen either!

I won't even try the stuff, it can't be good for you if it makes so many people so ill imo.

Peacocklady · 08/02/2014 20:42

Yes. Severe stomach ache and same for my mum who is sick with it. My sister eats it by the truckload though!

whitesugar · 08/02/2014 20:45

Big time shits - wouldn't have it in the house.

RaRa1988 · 08/02/2014 21:02

I'm severely allergic to it: agonising stomach pains to the extent where I can't stand, sit up, or walk. Haven't eaten it for at least 15 years because of that, and I'd never try it again. In case no-one else has mentioned it - haven't time to read the whole thread - back when I was newly vegetarian and we discovered I was allergic to it, we found it had caused something of a panic in the USA, where it was nearly banned in several states due to being considered dangerous after a lot of people had been hospitalised after eating it.

RaRa1988 · 08/02/2014 21:05

Oh, and I'm not allergic to anything else food-wise, and I eat tons of mushrooms and soya products so not that. Personally I think it's pretty bland anyway - there are far better products out there.

DoJo · 08/02/2014 21:17

I could say the same about plenty of other foods that I am allergic to, but I don't think the fact that some people react badly to a food means that it can't have health benefits to others.

Gemdar · 08/02/2014 21:25

Never and neither has anyone else I've served it up to...

Sharaluck · 08/02/2014 22:08

Yes awful stuff.

Bloating, vomiting, bad headaches.

I was shocked when I was visiting some nurseries that they serve it as a vegetarian dish (not even option, the main dish!!). Much prefer traditional vegetarian meals, quorn just seems to be a cheap/easy option. Also I'd imagine more people suffers from milder ill-effects that they have not yet linked to it.

FrostedButts · 08/02/2014 22:16

I have never had a reaction. I love it and I'm a meat eater!

DP loves it but had to stop eating it as he found out anything with egg gives him raging tummy ache - he's the vegetarian poor bugger

blondefriend · 08/02/2014 22:33

Intense stomach pain and diarrhoea (to the extent of having an accident once). The mince was definitely the main culprit but I wont touch any of it now. I'm not intolerant to eggs or wheat/gluten or other fungi/mushrooms so definitely the Quorn. I also think it's a lazy alternative to meat meals - why not actually serve a decent, vegetarian meal using vegetables and pulses, half the world's population have been doing it for centuries.

fluffypillow · 08/02/2014 22:39

Love Quorn, and eat it most days with no problems.

Tulip26 · 08/02/2014 22:40

Ahem, not to start a debate but do you know what's in intensively farmed meats? Hormones, tranquilisers, fillers, etc. And that's the things we know about, have you all forgotten the horse meat scandal? Give me a veggie sausage any day.

fluffypillow · 08/02/2014 22:43

blondefriend why a 'lazy' alternative? I have the same meals as the meat eaters in the family, but swap the meat for quorn because I like it. What is lazy about that?! Very strange comment.

BabysNewName · 08/02/2014 22:43

We buy veggie sausages sometimes and I always bulk out spag bol with quorn mince in addition to the beef mince. None of us have ever reacted to it, but I'm not that keen on the texture.

LucyLasticBand · 09/02/2014 10:28

i agree with blondefriend.
it is the lazy alternative. imo

LadyMaryLikesCake · 09/02/2014 10:33

Organic and/or freerange all the way, Tulip.

DoJo · 09/02/2014 12:13

The lazy alternative to what?

BrandNewIggi · 09/02/2014 12:15

So if someone buys a packet of frozen burgers, then that is obviously the "lazy" alternative to grinding your own mince etc. or not squeezing your own oranges for juice. And instant coffee must be very lazy indeed.. I couldn't care less how other people choose to save some time in the kitchen and I don't plan to criticise them for it.

BrianTheMole · 09/02/2014 12:20

No probs with it here. And to being a lazy alternative, so what if it is? I don't care and I still like it. Theres plenty of similar foods that are a quick / lazy alternative too. It matters little.

pizzachickenhotforyou · 09/02/2014 12:24

Yes. Makes me and several friends really ill.
