To ask if any of you have had a reaction to Quorn?

Enticed by Mo and seeing it was a good source if protein, my dh went and bought lots of Quorn.

Interested to know what replaced the meat, I googled it only to find warnings about how unwell people have become after eating it!

Do not fancy it much now but realistically has anyone fallen ill after eating Quorn other than trumping loads from the protein?

Well I won't be running like Mo - I chickened out and had a tuna sandwich for lunch instead Grin

I developed a yeast allergy (after travelling for a few months somewhere where there was no alcohol or bread) - I had to avoid all fungus-containing foods, including bread, alcohol, mushrooms, Marmite. They're not all the same, but they are similar, at least as far as my immune system is concerned.

mum2jakie · 08/02/2014 16:36

I love the taste but it gives me the runs

TooOldForGlitter · 08/02/2014 16:40

I sometimes have an allergic reaction to quorn. Usually the sausages; I get swollen gums and lips!

WomanScorned · 08/02/2014 16:42

2 out of 3 in our house get severe stomach cramps, nausea and diarrhoea. My ex husband had the same reaction. My best friend is violently sick from it.
We ate it for years before linking it to the symptoms. Since I found out what it actually is, I've stopped buying it, and am shocked that it's still being pushed as a health food when it's anything but :@
I'm a very strict vegetarian/sometime vegan, but I'd eat a badger, raw at the side of the road, before I'd eat Quorn again.

Lomaamina · 08/02/2014 16:47

DH gets violent reaction to any of the mycoprotein based veggie products, but not to normal mushrooms. He has no other food intolerance.

CouthyMow · 08/02/2014 16:50

Bad reactions here, quorn is soy and fungus based. I react to soy, so no quorn here

Snowsquonk · 08/02/2014 17:19

Oh god yes - especially the mince - violently ill, sickness, D&V, abdominal pain, headache, tunnel vision - like the worse ever hangover ever.

Once I'd finally put two and two together, never eaten it since and never had a repeat of the symptons. Vile stuff but lots of people eat it with no problems.

4athomeand1cooking · 08/02/2014 17:26

Wow the amount of responses here suggests that it is more common than the 1:145,000 the FDA suggest

The only time I ever had to call out the emergency doctor was after eating Quorn. I had eaten it quite a few times before without any ill effects but had severe D&V and thought I had appendicitis. I tried a miniscule amount another time with my GP's support and got another bad reaction. Have to say that I am not allergic to anything else and have never had a bad reaction to any other food.

Bloodyteenagers · 08/02/2014 17:43

Yes. The person who made it didn't tell me it was quorn. Told me it was mince. Like a fool I tried a bit. I was so ill I thought I was going to die, so did the person who gave me it.

scottishmummy · 08/02/2014 17:46

I've heard of adverse reaction to quorn - never experienced it though

nostress · 08/02/2014 17:50

My son (who has a number of food allergies) is allergic to it. Bascically lip swelling and rash started whilst still eating and then he was sick. Reported it to Quorn customer services as I was suspiticous that it might contain pea protein or pea fibre which my DS is allergic to. They assured me no peas and said they never had anyone allergic to it. Well google has taught me that was a massive lie!

HesterShaw · 08/02/2014 17:53

Quorn is ace.

I am a crap cook so we tend to eat it reasonably often.

BrandNewIggi · 08/02/2014 17:55

I think I eat some quorn every day.

tobiasfunke · 08/02/2014 17:58

I used to be fine with it and quite liked the Quorn pieces in a curry. Then I had the sausages 2 days in a row and ended up with terrible stomach pains and diarrhea for about 3 days. Haven't touched it since.

scottishmummy · 08/02/2014 17:59

I like quorn even thought its soylent green

Shallishanti · 08/02/2014 18:01

6 of us here eating it without ill effects
however- 1. I don't especially like it- it's a vegetarian convenience food, and I would prefer pulses etc if I had time

  1. Large quantities can trigger gout if you are prone to it (tip: don't eat up all the left over quorn and then get dehydrated)
scottishmummy · 08/02/2014 18:04

Quorn triggers gout?oh my giddy aunt

HesterShaw · 08/02/2014 18:07

I heard it triggered Crohn's.

Edenviolet · 08/02/2014 18:09

Dh has a severe reaction to it, immediate vomiting, agonising stomach pain and hives.

LadyMaryLikesCake · 08/02/2014 18:12

It makes ds vomit big style within an hour of eating it. It's happened both times he's eaten it so I know it wasn't a stomach bug. He was awake all night puking. Sad

ModreB · 08/02/2014 18:16

It makes me feel sick, bloated and with indigestion. DM thought I was "imagining" it until she gave me chicken quorn curry and I asked her the next day if the chicken had been off.

I am also the same with TVP, so it might be a common ingredient to both.

No food allergies other than lactose intolerance.

Rooners · 08/02/2014 18:23

Woah. This is really weird.

I've eaten it ever since I was a teenager (that's over 20 years ago, ahem) and it's never made me ill afaik. Hmm

But alarming though

I think I might not eat it any more now.

Rooners · 08/02/2014 18:24

Could it be the soy?

I have heard a lot of people are intolerant to edamame beans (which are soy beans I think?)

That would make me feel better.
