to think MNers can be better than this

OPs may be ignorant, they maybe obtuse, they may be in the wrong and they may be trolls...

but how can dozens upon dozens of swearing riddled instructions to carry out intimate acts be considered a reasonable response?

For some people MN is the first forum they frequent. It is perfectly possible to post something that is innocently ignorant yet massively outrageous to MNers. Then suddenly you are being called all the names under the sun and told to fuck yourself preferably until dead? really?

Believe me it can be a massive shock that people say things on the internet they would never say in real life. It is possible to feel very very frightened and threatened by such an onslaught.

AIBU to think if the last 5 posters have covered the 'fuck off to the far side of fuck' angle then maybe you don't need to stick the boot in too?

The best case scenario is that the person on the other end is indeed a troll....in which case why are you giving them what they want?

Yes I think the'words on the screen' comes from the mouths of the RL wimps as we all know they wouldn't have the guts to talk to people in reality like they do on the screen!

mistermakersgloopyglue · 05/02/2014 19:08

I do sort of see what you mean op. Take the topic of benefits. Now thanks to some highly intelligent debate I have seen on mumsnet, my whole outlook on the welfare system has changed an awful lot. While I don't hold the staunch view that some seem to on here that all people on benefits are saints who have simply fallen on hard times, my view has totally changed and I have taken it into real life and challenged others views.

However, I have seen some posters (maybe new, maybe not) come on and start perfectly valid threads about benefits, only to be greeted with 'oh do fuck off dear', 'that's right lets send them all to the workhouse' with no actual rational discussion at all. So it does happen.

However the thread you are referring to is a slightly different kettle of fish as it was so obviously a troll. Even if you were the dumbest person ever and had never pondered why teenagers might need nappies, in the time it would have taken to decide to start a thread and write it, you could think of several reasons Why it might be the case.

And if its a troll, well then they deserve a kicking doing they? Particularly when they start something that hey know could be upsetting for parents of disabled children.

LadyBeagleEyes · 05/02/2014 19:09

It takes a long time before MN can verify a poster, however many reports they get.
The harm trolls can do in that time is far, far worse than calling troll.
I appreciate a heads up from posters that spot them.
Can't believe anybody could believe that poster though, she/he was also drawing in posters who are already in vulnerable situations.
I'm please that they got angry rather than upset.

Goldenbear · 05/02/2014 19:10

It's annoying and tedious. I don't know anyone in RL that says, 'Are you projecting?' - thank fuck!

What 'benefits' are they then- you make it sound like the Freemasons?

Friendship
Fun
Education
Amusement
The chance to converse across race/religion/class/education level/wealth/attitude/continents
Interest
Political commentary
Feminist commentary

I get loads of benefits from MN. I love the place. There are posters I don't like in sections I don't like - I keep away.

There are threads I don't like. I hide them.

It's all so obvious, I don't understand why people can't do the same rather than complaining. With something like 800,000 members why would you want to police them?

Funnyfoot · 05/02/2014 19:13

Last year I joined mumsnet. I was massively abused on my first ever thread and labelled a troll. It wasn't even a controversial subject just a random observation.
There were PMs going from member to member inviting others to the thread so they could "have a go" at the troll. I know this to be true as I stumbled across a different thread saying so.
Various long standing posters were involved.I defended myself for as long as possible but in the end I de-registered and vowed never to return.

I ended up lurking instead. After a while I realised what was wrong with my posting style and I also found out about the issues with trolls (penis beaker, Sheffield guy and the P & B lot).

I have recently re-joined and accept that although the flaming was unpleasant I do see why the posters were so defensive and acted the way they did.
The recent troll on the bereavement boards has quite rightly upset people so the knee jerk reaction is to defend/attack.

Understanding is a 2 way street imo.

Goldenbear · 05/02/2014 19:15

So do you only like conversing with people are you not interested in debate as in people who don't agree with you. People that you 'gently' advise to go elsewhere?

Misspixietrix · 05/02/2014 19:17

That's my take on it too Golden. I'm an avid Tweeter. It's not until you write a tweet that goes viral and the online abuse that you get that followd that you realise actually, in comparison MN is a nest of Kittens! Grin.

YouTheCat · 05/02/2014 19:18

I don't appreciate being told what and how to post. I also don't tend to tell people to fuck off either. But I will pull people up for being a twat or expressing twattish, thoughtless things.

I think it's a good thing that people don't 'hide' things that they dislike as there would never be any robust discussions and that is what I like about MN.

LtEveDallas · 05/02/2014 19:21

No again, why do you insist on reading my posts that way?

I like to converse with a myriad of different people in a myriad of different circumstances. I don't like to converse with people that are complaining about the place I choose to have my conversations in Smile

Hullygully · 05/02/2014 19:23

being called all the names under the sun and told to fuck yourself preferably until dead?

Not seen it Beer? I see it at least 50 times a day. It's just simply awful.

Goldenbear · 05/02/2014 19:24

Because that's how you have written them- your posts. Maybe I have misunderstood.

HavantGuard · 05/02/2014 19:25

Have you been on deaththreatswithsexualovertones.com again?

Hullygully · 05/02/2014 19:26

Yes, don't tell anyone

Edendance · 05/02/2014 19:27

Funny, that was like my first experience too, almost exactly the same. I agree with ice, there's no need for the boot to be kicking once the op is down, troll or no troll. Report if you think it's a troll, job done.

TrampledUnderfoot · 05/02/2014 19:29

Poor kicked trolls Sad

Funnyfoot · 05/02/2014 19:36

I don't agree with the abuse of a troll as I think that's why they posting the first place. Saying that I do love the sarcastic and humorous response on troll threads. Grin

Edendance · 05/02/2014 19:37

But you don't know it's a troll, that's what the report button is for! And if it is then they're probably getting off on the attention, that's what the troll is after, after all!

DioneTheDiabolist · 05/02/2014 19:37

Getting replies makes trolls happy.
Being on Active Convos makes trolls happy.
I'm sure all the posters on that thread will be delighted to know they made a troll happy.

YANBU Ice.

TrampledUnderfoot · 05/02/2014 19:40

Well are we upsetting trolls or making them happy.

I'm a little confused TBH.

TrampledUnderfoot · 05/02/2014 19:40

OP is concerned that we are not making the trolls happy.

Hullygully · 05/02/2014 19:43

The OP is not talking about whether people are trolls or not.

She is talking about a type of behaviour that she feels to be unnecessary and unpleasant no matter to whom it is directed.

Separate issues.
