but how can dozens upon dozens of swearing riddled instructions to carry out intimate acts be considered a reasonable response?

For some people MN is the first forum they frequent. It is perfectly possible to post something that is innocently ignorant yet massively outrageous to MNers. Then suddenly you are being called all the names under the sun and told to fuck yourself preferably until dead? really?

Believe me it can be a massive shock that people say things on the internet they would never say in real life. It is possible to feel very very frightened and threatened by such an onslaught.

AIBU to think if the last 5 posters have covered the 'fuck off to the far side of fuck' angle then maybe you don't need to stick the boot in too?

The best case scenario is that the person on the other end is indeed a troll....in which case why are you giving them what they want?

I haven't read all of the posts after the first couple of pages but I agree with Ice. There was a thread this week where one poster called another 'a massive cunt.' I don't think anyone involved was a troll, I think it was just a bunch of women who had gotten themselves into a right old lather and were tearing into each other. It was ridiculous. I always report personal stuff like that and hope that the posters see that their posts have been deleted for breaking talk guidelines (and think about what they are saying). But you read their later posts and it doesn't seem to have made a difference. These posters sound like intelligent people but they shortcut to swearing and personal comments so quickly. I find it weird people care so much about arguing with some random person they don't know and whose life doesn't affect them. I'm not talking about troll business here, but normal people just getting angry and sweary so fast you wonder what they are like in RL. Belting people in pubs? Shouting at their friends? More likely totally resonably behaved and venting general pissedoffness on other posters. Makes these threads an unpleasant place to be.

It's just people who like having a go at the regulars Maryz, there seems to be a lot of it around.
If you're a popular poster, which you are, many people feel it's ok to have a dig.
I don't know why, it's truly puzzling, though I do think some of the anti troll hunters have been burned a few times by investing in troll stories and end up feeling foolish, and instead of hating the trolls, take it out on those who were warning them.
I very rarely see you troll hunt though.
