I was thinking about this for DH's grandmother. She is over ninety and has just come out of hospital and going mad. MIL refuses to buy her cigs but she and her DP continue to smoke.

ginmakesitallok · 05/02/2014 07:09

At 90 I think she should be allowed to smoke if she wants to!

Allergictoironing · 05/02/2014 08:00

Isn't that just a bit hypocritical of your MIL?! I'm with ginmakesitallok, at over 90 surely smoking isn't going to make her die much younger than the average person Confused.

But seriously, you may be able to persuade her onto the e-cigs though I've noticed that very elderly people find it harder to accept new things like this. Maybe a cigalike type, rather than big battery & tank system?

90? Shock My mum - at 70 odd - had a chat with gp about smoking and even he agreed that giving up would cause her more stress etc than it would be worth in terms of quality of life at her age. So she carried on smoking, but cut down a bit. She would have loved all this vaping stuff, had a go with cigalikes but didn't like them (none of us did really). She would have been doing alchemy in the kitchen like nobody's business but she died some years ago in her 80s, so all this came too late for her, sadly.

Just wanted to let you know that age is no barrier!

Sorry to hear that Jux.

I don't really understand MIL either Confused

Perhaps I'll see if DGMIL would have a go at my old cigalike.

I smoke roll ups. I switched to nicolites last year for about 4/5months but it was MUCH more expensive than my roll up habit. I'd like to stop smoking again, and switch to vaping but to the ones you guys are talking about - refillable ones. I am pretty confused though. The nicolite system was simple for my little brain, unscrew and replace cartridge when necessary, recharge battery when necessary. Can someone explain REALLY SIMPLY, or point me to an idiot's guide on how to do the other vaping method, and what brand to use, and where to get it from, please? Price is my main consideration, I would like it to be cheaper than my roll-up habit, which costs me £7-£7.50 a week - is this achievable?

Noodle - lots of people on here will be able to help. The newbies board has loads of useful info/discount codes etc

You basically need a battery, a tank of some sort to hold your liquid and some e-liquid, a charger and you're good to go.

You can get a cheapish starter kit for around the £20 mark, eliquid from joosejuice is £1.49 for 10ml (as a 20-30 a day ex smoker I use about 3ml a day). After your initial outlay vaping is much cheaper, as long as you don't get carried away and buy loads of shinies!

I mix my own liquid now - which is cheaper than buying pre made stuff.

QueenStromba · 05/02/2014 10:30

It's not too different to the nicolites. You still have a battery (normally bigger though) which is charged the same way but instead of attaching it to a disposable cartridge you attach it to a tank that you fill yourself with liquid. After the initial outlay for batteries and tanks all you need to buy is the liquid and the occasional replacement atomizers for your tanks/new tanks - you can get that well under £7 a week easily.

If you let us know how much you can afford for equipment then we can advise you on what to get.

Guys I'm going to do a simple guide for Noodle - but it could take me few mins to compose. I'm going to try to get as much info as I can into the one post, so give me 15 mins or so then you can all add to my suggestions rather than all of us post at the same time? Smile

Allergic -???????? Nice thought, but since when was MN about -"No-one else post or give their opinion,I'm about to do a definitive post"??

Ooh, thank you for all the quick and informative replies already! I'll wait for allergic's guide. I'm not sure what my budget is for the start up stuff. I will ask my friend if they want to buy me as a present and if so how much I can spend (I'm skint at the moment).

Allergictoironing · 05/02/2014 10:45

Sorry ginmakesitallok - I really didn't mean it like that, more to save everyone all doing long posts covering the same or similar ground honest! Blush. I've been caught out a few times posting stuff that has repeated others posts from a couple of mins earlier, so was just trying to get a starter down to save everyone the repetition?

Noodle There is a pretty good guide at the very start of this thread that I copied over from the last thread.

I'll leave it at that old post then, and Noodle can come back with more questions for any bits that weren't covered in that.

My advice would be to get iClears from the start and not to mess around with GSH2's or CE4's but that's just me Grin

Noodle, I came off roll-ups and was spending a similar amount to you. Now I've stopped buying shiny things for a bit I think I'm spending about £2/week.

I get where you're coming from allergic, in many ways a forum thread is not ideal. Someone comes on and goes 'help!', we all post advice and recommendations and by the time the next person comes on and shouts 'help!' the advice is buried pages back and we have to begin again.

OTOH, we would probably all make different recommendations and the tech seems to move on incredibly fast so there's always something newer if not better to be recommended.

The vaping forums usually have a basic guide stickied at the top but they are often out of date IME.

See, I really like GS-H2s and think they're the best 'learning' clearo because you can see exactly what's going on inside without taking them to bits. You can also learn to build coils on them if that's your bag. I've recoiled all mine to 1.8 ohms now which is a big improvement and they're still going strong since October.

iclear 16 is a lovely vape but ime is prone to wetting itself on the battery and has to be kept the right way up or it will flood. Didn't get on with the iclear 30 at all.

I agree about CE4s though - they are shite.

Grin

My advice would be:

  • get two good batteries with as high a mah rating as you can afford
  • get a few different sorts of cheapish clearos and see what sort you get on with.
  • try lots of flavours
  • don't skimp on nicotine, at least to start with
Report
Ledaire · 05/02/2014 11:17

That's good advice. I shall see what happens when my replacement GSH2 comes, and I agree about them being a good learning clearo.

I'll hold off buying an iclear 30 now!

Report
QueenStromba · 05/02/2014 11:21

I think the iclear 16s are great, especially if you are a beginner and want to save money. The coils last forever without any maintenance and I've never had a problem with flooding the coils despite the fact that I always keep them on their side and I'm terrible for filling them right to the top. I think they're pretty damn foolproof.

Report
PlentyOfPubeGardens · 05/02/2014 11:21

But you might love the iclear 30! This is why it's so tricky to make recommendations Grin

I just went to unscrew the battery to give it a bit of a wipe and unscrewed the clearo instead, spilling liquid on the sofa.

But I've done that with the GSH2 as well Blush

Looking for advice really. Fancied getting hubby a new e cig for valentines day. He is currently using an ego battery and any clearo I supply him with. I am using an innokin itaste vv and I love it although it's a bit long and heavy. I have seen the innokin MVP2 at a really good price and wondered if any mumsnetters use it. The battery life seems amazing. However he does need it to fit in his trouser /jeans pocket and I wondered if it was too clunky. Any advice
