Parcel arrived on the 2nd of January

it was a delivery that the delivery people put it under there doormat

I took it in in case of theft

We live in flats

I put a note threw their door

It's not been collectected

can I open it and keep it now?

It's theft if there is intent to permanently deprive the owner of it - your thread says you are considering keeping it for yourself.

If you do this demonstrate your intent to permanently deprive the owner of it, and you will therefore have committed theft.

gamerchick · 31/01/2014 19:22

no you can't keep it.. you shouldn't have took it in in the first place.

maddening · 31/01/2014 19:23

no - not only was it not delivered in to your care - but taking it then keeping it for yourself is stealing - keep knocking - maybe ask direct neighbours if they know when they are in. Contact their landlord and ask if he can ring them.

they haven't imposed on you by asking you to look after it so you can't suggest there is a reasonable timescale for collection.

TheWitTank · 31/01/2014 19:23

But you will be stealing it if you open it and keep it for yourself, whatever it is. Just go and chuck it back where it was originally. They are sure to pick it up as they walk over it daily. If it is stolen then it is their loss.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 31/01/2014 19:23

Deliveries were really late around christmas - are they definitely still there? They've not gone away and not seen the note?

And if they are still there why the heck haven't you managed to get in touch with them yet.

You can't steal it.

HectorVector · 31/01/2014 19:25

What bellablot said!

SaucyJack · 31/01/2014 19:26

This is a wind-up, shirley?

ShitOnAStick · 31/01/2014 19:26

Either take it round or put it back where the delivery person left it. If you keep it are you are exactly the same as a thief. though I doubt this is even real

2tiredtocare · 31/01/2014 19:27

'Stealing is really not your only option' LOVE it, really made me laugh Grin

ATotallyOriginalUserName · 31/01/2014 19:27

Oh come on OP, with the way you worded that, of course people are going to be sharp.

RoseRedder · 31/01/2014 19:27

It's sitting in my hall

What should I do then?

It's been about 29 days and they haven't collected it

What should I do with it??????

BIWI · 31/01/2014 19:27

Knock on their (not there) door. Tell them you have it.

Or put another note through (not threw) their letter box.

Of course YWBU to keep it. Hmm

Is there any label on it suggesting who it is from?

SaucyJack · 31/01/2014 19:30

Go and put it fucking back?

And don't take other people's post again.

Rowlers · 31/01/2014 19:30

Knock on their door and when they open it, hand it over

RubyGoat · 31/01/2014 19:30

Have you seen them around lately? Have you tried another note? How do you know they haven't a) gone on holiday/into hospital whatever, or b) died. How hard have you really tried to return the parcel.

You claim you took it to prevent anyone from stealing it, however your actions basically amount to theft unless you return it or keep trying.

NickNacks · 31/01/2014 19:31

What part of 'take it back' do you not understand?

TheReluctantCountess · 31/01/2014 19:31

I agree with Biwi on all counts.

ExitPursuedTheRoyalPrude · 31/01/2014 19:31

Have you never read Tess?

My cat was run over and the neighbour put a note through my door but it went under the mat. I spent the night calling for him.

grabaspoon · 31/01/2014 19:31

knock on their door

I once put a note though a neighbour's door and she didn't get it due to her toddler/dog intercepting it first.

BMW6 · 31/01/2014 19:31

As you took it from their doorstep you have also taken the responsibility to deliver it safely to them.

You will have to keep knocking until you get a response, at which point you can explain why you took it from their doorway.

How can you not understand this?? Angry

HyvaPaiva · 31/01/2014 19:31

Maybe put it back where you stole it from? Hmm

Before you say 'i haven't fucking stolen it' again:

You took it without prior permission from the owner. That's theft right there.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 31/01/2014 19:31

Come on. In the nicest possible way (actually, it may be there isn't a nice way to say this), you cannot honestly be trying to make out you struggling with the intellectual level required to work out what to do?

Put it back.
Knock again.
Catch them on the way in.

Anything other than stealing it.

HaroldLloyd · 31/01/2014 19:32

Why not just put it back, hmmm?

This is not a complex conundrum.

Seriously.
