AIBU to expect a 'please' from a cashier when they ask me 4 money?

I was in Marks and Spencers yesterday I had some rude cashier asking me to move my basket off the conveyer belt without even saying please.I thought I would let it go even though I was niggled by her barking an order at me and being so rude.I moved the basket and said nothing. When it came to paying the woman she asked for the money without saying 'Please'.I was so fed up with her by now that I pulled her up on it and tore a strip off of her.She subsequently apologised and I thought that would be the last of it.
I went back in this evening and went to another cashier and low and behold the same thing happened there when she asked for the money. There was no 'Please' I thought (ffs) what's going on here? I asked her whether it was Marks and Spencers policy to be so impolite when asking for the money when buying goods? She said no but she was not obliged to say 'please'.

I thought ok then if you want to argue the point lets get a manger involved.Along came a manager and he said to me that he didn't know what all the fuss was about and that the cashiers had done nothing wrong by not saying 'Please' when asking for the money and he said he would not be reprimanding them on it.He told me that by the cashier saying 'thank you' and 'have a nice day' was surfice and please was not needed.

I mean to say what is this world coming to? I was brought up to say 'please' and 'thank you' and i'm not going to stop now and i expect people to say please and thank you to me especially if I am a customer at Marks and Spencers being served by a cashier.

I will be making an official complaint tomorrow to the store manager and head office. Your views please.TYIA

From the cashiers themselves, okaaay.

How did that happen, did they drag them off the tills to curtesy?

ShakerattlenRoll · 22/01/2014 18:22

perpen no wind up it's genuine i can't abide poor manners and pig ignorant people that don't even understand the concept of good manners because they are too thick and not spiritually gifted.

Ok well I need more facts. Did you tell M&s about your spiritual gifts?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 22/01/2014 18:25

The more you say, the worse you sound, OP. My sympathies are now totally with the cashiers and their managers. You are not a champion of good manners.

ShakerattlenRoll · 22/01/2014 18:26

Harold are you the type of person that never says please and thank you? Do you like it when people are rude to you? Do say nothing when people are rude to you? I don't i pull them up on it .I don't take any rubbish off anybody

I don't think you need spiritual gifts to be pleasant.

If I was running M&S I'd want to know. I sometimes go to our local Londis (ridiculous prices) just because the staff are so nice.

poppyswill · 22/01/2014 18:34

Op, I couldn't agree with you more. Thank you, please, always words I instil into my children to whoever they are talking to. Unfortunately I had the misfortune to work on the checkouts at Asda for about six months. Always kept the pleases and thank yous coming in abundance, unfortunately there are a lot of rude and aggressive people out there and whoever they are could not give a toss. I see you've met lots here. Not sure why they are so riled about basic manners whether in a professional capacity or not. Perhaps they have no social skills and feel the best form of defense is attack. Op, well done, you should take pride in your manners and obvious good upbringing.

HaroldLloyd · 22/01/2014 18:34

I feel a miscarriage of justice has occurred.

It upsets me.

EduCated · 22/01/2014 18:35

I am CRYING.

Also, seriously, we and customer service would say any old bollocks just to get rid of the more interesting customers.
