To have caused a fuss in library ??!

I had to pop to the local library this morning to print some important docs out, as we don't have a printer. They have 6 computers, and then about 12 in their computer training room, although there was a class going on so those ones could not be used.

The 6 were all taken up; some guy looked like he was searching a job site (good on him), some other guy was reading large documents, not sure about 2 others, but then there was a girl (about 24ish) and a lad (probably a little older) sat just scrolling through Facebook, and blatantly daydreaming! There was a queue for the computers and I know some locals who do visit every day to carry out job searches etc.

Anyway, I couldn't help myself, and asked the guy on the desk why it was right for people to have to wait for a computer, for productive purposes, while people are sat wasting their lives on Social Networking, when maybe they should be taking a leaf out of the other guys' book and searching the job sites?

It really gets my back up as I'm a huge believer that you need to work hard in life. I had a chat with the lady on the other desk and she was in total agreement with me that the use of SN sites should be banned from these computers - I have written my complaint to the Council Angry

Ha. I love this thread.

OP - just a word of warning. My adult brother (in his 20s) uses the public library on Thursday. He will usually be found watching YouTube videos of 1980s children's cartoons. He will usually be wearing tracksuit bottoms which are too short (check this carefully because this is probably the only visual clue it's him). You might have seen him in there every Thursday doing the same thing.

I would suggest you don't approach him and ask him to move before his time. You see, he might cry. And I mean sob. Like a toddler.

He has autism and severe learning difficulties. He is on benefits. Can't have a computer at home - he becomes obsessed and won't leave the house. A visit to the library is his weekly treat. He goes there around midday. He can't get there any earlier because his bus pass isn't accepted before 10am. He can't go any later because the buses stop running and he can't afford a taxi to get home. On other days of the week, he does voluntary work. On weekends he does a paper round before most people are out of bed.

As others have said, you can't tell a persons circumstances by looking at them.

Ps. I work as a freelancer. Today I have used Facebook to 1) pass on a job lead to a friend, 2) send another friend some important debt collection advice and 3) speak to my accountant to confirm my tax return payment has been received by HMRC. Would you have kicked me off too?!?!

grumpyoldbat · 17/01/2014 07:37

I didn't sinister it was my day off because I'm working the weekend. Next day off the 28th.

YABU! My mum, sister and dad all use the library to access the Internet. My dad job searches as hes doley scum (gardener for 30 years, did the gardens of some of the richest people in Nortg London, was very well respected, his mum died and then he split with my mum all inside a year and he had a breakdown and lost his clients. has worked massively hard to put his life back together. V V proud of him) he then checks his emails and facebook. So what. My mum uses it to catch up with her friends on social media. Shes a pensioner. So what. My sister lost her job last year, job hunts though the jobcentre then goes to library to catch up with her friends. Shes 23. So what? My nephew is 13 and has no Internet access at home. He catches up with his friends. So what?
What makes you more worthy than them? You've got the internet at home I take it? Buy a fucking printer and leave the library to those that need it you over-entitled mare. Angry Its people like you that make the less fortunate feel like shit about themselves.Sad

Please, pease, please, please, please show us the letter!!!

Pretty please. Smile

LiberalLibertine · 17/01/2014 09:00

Yes, I'd love to be in the council office when they open the letter.... Dear council, imagine my horror when I got to the library to find the computers being used by the public?! I trust you will be sending the council bailiffs to evict the lazy fuckers, so I can get on with my very important business. With thanks Mrs Entitled from Unreasonablesville

cory · 17/01/2014 09:07

I know plenty of people who use FB for work related purposes. Should they perhaps concede half a seat to the OP?

StanleyLambchop · 17/01/2014 09:16

I don't work, my kids are school age now so I could but I don't. I use the computer for social purposes. (shrugs) Yesterday I was in the library reading a book. It was not a book about finding a job. Should I not have been utilising books/seats/heat/ the same air as other, apparently more worthy library users?

PS- I have my own printer at home.
PPS- Before you judge me, I don't claim benefits so am not scrounging off the tax payer. My DH has a job and pays taxes.

justmyview · 17/01/2014 09:23

I think OP should amend her letter to include a request that all fiction should be removed from the library. Reading for pleasure is a frivolous waste of time.

Suitable literature to be retained for public use could include -

atlas
dictionary
grammar
job hunting
table manners & general etiquette

You shouldn't of even been looking at what they were doing! If your important docs happened to be confidential how would you feel if some busy body was leering around looking at what you were doing ! Ps got my job from a jobs page on .... FACEBOOK

Bearing in mind the nature of OP's grievance, I think the comment #getalife must be in jest

Pots and kettles .......

UncleT · 17/01/2014 11:21

And the irony just keeps coming and coming.....

ohhifruit · 17/01/2014 11:24

TheRealCarrieBradshaw did you learn about hashtags on social media whilst unemployed? Ommmmmmmvvvvv, I'm telling the council.

Its JodiA or whatever variation of that name she is. Don't engage with it

ohhifruit · 17/01/2014 11:34

What I don't get OP is why you asked if you're being unreasonable if you're unable to accept that in fact 99.9% of people do think you have been completely unreasonable?
Next time you're down the old library why not hop on a computer and register the domain name iamtotallyreasonable.fuckingcom at set it as the library's homepage?

TheRealCarrieBradshaw · 17/01/2014 11:34

SPs errr wierdo!!
