To have caused a fuss in library ??!

I had to pop to the local library this morning to print some important docs out, as we don't have a printer. They have 6 computers, and then about 12 in their computer training room, although there was a class going on so those ones could not be used.

The 6 were all taken up; some guy looked like he was searching a job site (good on him), some other guy was reading large documents, not sure about 2 others, but then there was a girl (about 24ish) and a lad (probably a little older) sat just scrolling through Facebook, and blatantly daydreaming! There was a queue for the computers and I know some locals who do visit every day to carry out job searches etc.

Anyway, I couldn't help myself, and asked the guy on the desk why it was right for people to have to wait for a computer, for productive purposes, while people are sat wasting their lives on Social Networking, when maybe they should be taking a leaf out of the other guys' book and searching the job sites?

It really gets my back up as I'm a huge believer that you need to work hard in life. I had a chat with the lady on the other desk and she was in total agreement with me that the use of SN sites should be banned from these computers - I have written my complaint to the Council Angry

You guys are killing me :o

kali110 · 16/01/2014 21:09

Yabu. Buy your own printer then you wont have to mix with the public!
They waited for their turn they can use their turn to view what they want.
You sound delightful.

My dp runs a business and uses fb to sell his products.

YABU. A public library is a public library, For the public. This means anyone is entitled to visit & use the resources for any reason that they want to. This would include looking at novels (made up stories) non-fiction books & using the computer, etc. No-one has preference over anyone else!

MoreLifeInATrampsVest · 16/01/2014 21:20

Op is probably camping outside the library to get first dibs in the morning. That will learn them lazy jobless feckers.

madmammy excellent post.

I think the OP has a point,

There should be a job created at every library, the role being to judge each member of the public needs, and give them access to the computer in order of importance.

Obviously I will be in charge of determining the priorities.

it will go

Magic seaweed users of course have first priority you wouldn't want anyone to miss a wave.

Met office users get second priority because you have to check.

anyone on the renting section of right move gets to go third everyone needs a home.

anyone on ebay gets to next they need the money.

gumtree they might need a buggy desperately.

everyone will go along with my choices, because no one would disagree with this order, will they?

RhondaJean · 16/01/2014 21:49

Op op op.

The thing with public access pcs in libraries is that they are NOT there as employability pcs. They are there so that people who don't have their own pc can engage with the online world which other people have access to. There is no hierarchy of importance of tasks there.

The job centre can provide access to search for and apply for jobs though, so technically the biggest wasted resource in MY opinion was the guy using the all access pc to do that Grin

Dromedary · 16/01/2014 22:00

The OP is right of course, and should write in to the Daily Mail, who'll probably do a front page on it.
Anyone who is not in work (or who is in work and also in receipt of benefits) should be banned from spending any of their time doing anything other than job searching. Including social networking, reading fiction books, talking to friends, going to the pub (shouldn't be able to afford the pub), etc etc.

Everyone in the library thought you were a twat. The council will absolutely pin your letter on their bored lunatics cork board.

Salmotrutta · 16/01/2014 22:16

I don't know how you dare show your face Daley.

Shocking.

YABVU and presumptuous. Public library computers are for any legal use by library members. You saw what they were doing for a few minutes. You have no idea what they were doing before or after.

I personally feel that calling someone lazy is very nasty. Of all the insults I've heard over the years it is the one that has upset me the most and still causes terrible anxiety.

I've spent some time on FB this week. I had a day off work on Tuesday and back shift tomorrow so I'll be out and about during office hours. Obviously that indicates I'm unemployed and a lazy fecker. I mean I use Facebook and I'm at home during office hours. Actually I've done 34.5hrs so far this week and 18.5hrs still to go. But you OP would just see that I'd been on FB, and i was out and about during office hours so obviously I'm jobless and lazy Hmm

I wasn't in work Tuesday

grumpyoldbat · 16/01/2014 22:39

oh how did I type that extra line Confused

RussianBlu · 16/01/2014 23:26

Thank you for posting op. You have given me something to chuckle about before I go to sleep. I wonder what the response was from the person who worked in the library.
