AIBU?

To think that personalised number plates should be banned?!!

They are, in my view, ostentatious, utterly pointless and a pure waste of money that could be much better used other ways, even 'selfish' ones like a nice meal out or a mini break. Or non-foodselfish things like charity donations.

If I ruled the world [:)], I'd ban them, or make people buying them have to pay an equal amount in a stupidity and arrogance and tax.

Anyone disagree?!

I used to be a carer for an elderly lady who lived in sheltered accommodation...an elderly couple used to park their car in the car park and I always had to have a titter to myself when I saw their reg plate was
DOA I wondered if they realised what it stood for??? Shock not 'personal plate' per say but thought I'd mention Grin.

I also bought a car with my late hubbs money when he passed away...I was going to view it and fell in love with it, then I noticed it also had his exact initials on the reg plate. That sealed the deal for me and also makes me feel like he's still close to me, mad I know but it gives me comfort although is not 'personalised' as such.

How rude.

My plate was a gift from DH on my wedding day.

I'm neither stupid nor arrogant. However to judge people as such on the basis of their car reg and start yet another thread about it is a little of both. IMO.

Each to their own.
I think that they system they have in Switzerland is best. You buy a number plate, then move it to different cars that you own.
so, we had one - ABC 4567 for example on our Galaxy, had we got another car alongside that one, we could hang it on that too. If we sold our cars, we'd still retain the plate to use on another.
That way you can avoid the embarrasing question of your reg number and forgetting it when reporting an accident to the police.

The best ones I saw were on two cars in a driveway 2B and NOT 2B. Someone told me they are Kevin Spacey's. it really only worked if you saw them together and knew who owned them, otherwise I would have just thought that someone had more money than sense Wink

Each to their own. I don't like them, but it's not my money, so it shouldn't bother me!

My favorite plate spotted locally is W1NGE. Was that someone's revenge for getting nagged to death?

It's got so bad round here someone asked hubby what his plate meant - it doesn't mean anything, it's just an old T reg car.

YANBU. They're cringey.

Those who do it to disguise the age of your car: who do you think ACTUALLY gives a fuck how old your car is?!? (Apart from you, obviously...) Grin

spermy take a bow.

Although I just realised I don't know where he lives. I've seen this car in Ascot a couple of times. He was in it once but it's not the done thing to wave and go 'yoo hoo' sadly

I'm still laughing at the OP's mini rant about leather passport wallets. Presumably you don't travel much? A passport can disintegrate in 10 years without one. It's no different from putting a cover on your phone. Hmm

No London MNers on this thread?
There is a house on Chelsea embankment with 2 cars parked outside
Car 1 reg - 2B
Car 2 reg - NOT 2B
Sometimes they park them the wrong way round and I get irrationally annoyed by it!

In Knutsford there is an Alfa v6 with the plate V6CUL - bet the owner doesn't know that cul means arse in French.

A Porsche 911 with the plate V11 GRA which made me smile.

I once saw either a Rolls or Bentley with the plate 1 OBE, which I thought a bit naff.

Was wondering what the official collective noun is for a group of personalised numberplate owners? A 'discretion of'? A 'whisper of'?

Do people really not know when to use their and when to use there? I worked that out when I was about 8.

Do people really not know that it is generally recognised as bad form to correct people's grammar and spelling unless it's a thread on grammar and spelling. May I point you in the direction of pedant's corner.

Indeed. But it was too irresistible to point out to the person who thought they were so superior.
