AIBU?

To think that personalised number plates should be banned?!!

They are, in my view, ostentatious, utterly pointless and a pure waste of money that could be much better used other ways, even 'selfish' ones like a nice meal out or a mini break. Or non-foodselfish things like charity donations.

If I ruled the world [:)], I'd ban them, or make people buying them have to pay an equal amount in a stupidity and arrogance and tax.

Anyone disagree?!

Personal number plates was on my car before we bought it, the owners took it off.

For some reason every time I go and get parts they need the VIM number. That the only reason I hate them.

They are a great form of taxation, as someone noted upthread.

There's one I see parked in a North London street which is B19BOY. Now I'd be willing to bet my mortgage that that is owned by a twat.

EddieVeddersfoxymop 'private plates' ?! What do you mean, private?!! Like private school because you've paid for it? Ridiculous.

There was a school gate mum who had a private number plate, but when she got her new car left the 'new reg' on showing this year for a while before switching back - says it all really.

My plate cost £250.
Less than a lot of people pay for shoes/dresses/handbags/haircuts/meals in fancy restaurants

Meh to anyone who things it a big deal or says something meaningful about me

I saw one in Newcastle last year that said T00OON. Think he was a football fan...?

I'd love to have one, will never have the spare money though. Agree with Star - why live the 'proper' way?

Why concern yourself with what others choose to spend THEIR money on.

It is possible to give to charity AND have a private plate.

Next time I decide to spend some money I shall give you a nudge first and see if it's ok with you. FFS

A relative in law of mine drives a very very expensive car and has the personalised plates. He shares same initials as an extremely famous ex footballer. Through his work he has to go to many football grounds. He says it's (almost) worth the stupid money when he comes out and there are paps waiting to see the footballer and instead out comes a "well fed" middle aged bloke.

I feel the same way about designer handbags and so many other things, which is why I don't indulge. But for others they are a source of delight and happiness that cause no harm to others.
So YABU.

Tbf, they're only worth what anyone chooses to pay for them!

If people didn't pay large sums for them they'd all cost about £50!

I think they are a complete waste of money. DH disagrees and has put one on each of our cars. Blush I still think they are a complete waste of money.

I wouldn't be seen dead with one, but don't mind anyone else having them, several people I know who are anything but pretentious twats have them.

Mine cost $25, which is about £15, of which about 1/3 went to charity...

I could have got a non-personalised plate for about $10 less but none of it would have gone to charity.

I wouldn't have one myself, but don't have an issue with other people having them. As long as it's legal I don't see the problem.

They are called either private/personal plates as in they are referred to by both names

Yes, I disagree with you, principalitygirl.

While I do think that is not what I would spend my money on, I also think that if you happened to have the power to ban something and the thing you chose to ban was personalised number plates, then you would rival all others in levels of stupidity and arrogance.

[Incidentally, perhaps I should be smart enough to consider spending on such things. A past neighbour (bit of a boy racer) once bought one for about £500, proudly (and probably arrogantly) drove around with it for 4 or 5 years, then sold it for over £11,000. Maybe not so stupid.]

It's strange that people have such strong opinions on it. There's plenty of things I wouldn't buy but others do - I've never spent more than £40 on a pair of footwear but others will spend £300+. I don't see how someone spending their own money can be so upsetting. Unless it's on those really loud exhausts.
When dt's were newborns a chap down the road had the noisiest car I'd ever heard and would rev his engine at ridiculous times of night. He had a normal reg plate but was definitely a twat Angry

Fwiw.

I have several, some I've had for many years and I am only a twat the first tuesday of every second month if it happens to fall on the third and I've been drinking.
