AIBU?

To think that personalised number plates should be banned?!!

They are, in my view, ostentatious, utterly pointless and a pure waste of money that could be much better used other ways, even 'selfish' ones like a nice meal out or a mini break. Or non-foodselfish things like charity donations.

If I ruled the world [:)], I'd ban them, or make people buying them have to pay an equal amount in a stupidity and arrogance and tax.

Anyone disagree?!

I couldn't give 2 shits about them, tbh. It's a weird & pointless thing to get het up about.

My DH has just inherited one from a deceased family member. Its just the family initials and is worth a packet. We can't sell unfortunately.

Its going on his defender, which he has because he is a farmer and needs a utility 4 x 4. No chelsea tractors here Smile.

I do think they look a bit poncey though. Particularly if they are not very good ones.

YABU, instead of wasting time creating this thread you could have been doing useful charity work because that's what people have to do with their "spare" time/money in your world

I usually defend to the hilt the right of people to spend their own money as they see fit.

However - to me there is something faintly obscene about spending thousands on a bit of tin to identify your car, when there are people in this country who can't even afford shoes.

I know it is irrational and that people (inc me) waste money that could be put to far better use, in all sorts of ridiculous ways, but - this is the one that offends me the most.

YANBU OP.

In my view pointless and a waste of money, why dont we ban christmas and piss off to America and become puritans again.

But they don't harm anyone and raise money. They do not bother me.

How is it any different to people who spend more money than strictly necessary on clothes? Or handbags? Or shoes? Or makeup, haircuts, music, holidays? Or anything else they might like? Could also be described as ostentatious and utterly pointless. Their money, their choice. Not how I spend mine, but why should anyone else care?

Do people seriously give a shit what other people have on their numberplates?

Get a hobby.

OP, you suggest that the money I spent on private numbers would be better spent on a mini break? Hmmmmm, no thanks. We are car daft, we both have private reg plates and we have one on retention for our DD which she will get when she's older. We love our cars, and we love having private plates.

Not everyone likes them, agreed, but to ban them when really it's up to us how we spend our money is a bit harsh, no?

I don't see any need to ban personalised/vanity/call-them-what-you-will registration marks. What should be banned, though, is the practice of distorting the shape and spacing of the characters so that they become difficult to read clearly. It's meant to be part of the MOT, but I guess most offenders have two sets of plates, a legal set for MOT times and an illegal set for general driving around.

Depends. Something like NH 15 (for example) on a dark-coloured Bentley says something about a man.

Like: 'I'm fucking rich and could keep you in the style to which you'd like to become accustomed'.

i have a friend who had her car stolen. The police advised that a personal plate would make her car less likely to be stolen.

I don't think they reduce your ins costs but if you have a car that is tempting to thieves it is a cheap way of potentially stopping thieves. Lots of the plates only cost a couple of hundred pounds.

I know someone who drives a Ferrari with a plate that says something like: D0 53X.

If I was single I'd definitely go for a fling because he'd show me a good time. But I don't think he's a keeper.

I've seen miniature ones spelling out a child's name attached to a buggies before Shock

What's the problem with baby on board stickers?

I also someone whose dad bought a plate spelling her childhood nickname like MA 15Y. It's not that but it's similar.

Seems a harmless enough present from a loving dad to his daughter. Let's hope you never pull up next to her at traffic lights OP.

They absolutely should not be banned, they are the best type of tax - entirely avoidable tax on nonfunctional vanity products. I'm happy to pay less tax and let others have personalised plates.

I have a personalised plate with my name on but I think I only paid about £250 for it. They don't have to break the bank.

Excellent, I never realised I was a twat, and that people judged me on my number plates! I've got my initials, I've also got mine and dhs initials and the year we met, and we bought one for ds that is his nickname and year of birth.
My dh has quite a few on retention, most came with cars that were traded in to him.
Tbh, I find them useful because mostly they're easy to remember so if someone is, heaven forbid, driving like a twat, I'm more likely to remember a1bob than av56hgf or whatever. It makes the car more recognisable iykwim?

My DH has one on his car, it is three initials and a number. He's had it a long time and way before they became popular to own.

His is worth approx £30K. I'm quite 'meh' about them, it's his choice what he spends his money on. I've told him if he doesn't will it to someone, I'm going to flog it if he dies first!
