AIBU?

To think that personalised number plates should be banned?!!

They are, in my view, ostentatious, utterly pointless and a pure waste of money that could be much better used other ways, even 'selfish' ones like a nice meal out or a mini break. Or non-foodselfish things like charity donations.

If I ruled the world [:)], I'd ban them, or make people buying them have to pay an equal amount in a stupidity and arrogance and tax.

Anyone disagree?!

I thought the baby on board signs were for the emergency services. In case there was a big accident. I could be wrong though.

yes, it was (and probably still is) Steve Parrish who owns PEN15, some years ago his wife had FAN1Y don't know if she's still got it.

Personally I would not want a private plate but I have no problem with people spending their money on them.

Brian the emergency services pay no heed to those signs. They seem to be an exercise in self congratulation.

We inherited one when we bought our car. It's three intials, then a number. Unfortunately, neither my husband nor I share those initials (they aren't the most "far out" letters - the middle name might be problematic to match up though).

I assume, as the previous owner was happy to pass it on, that the combo is not a valuable one.

A friend of mine attended an OU finances and investment course and their tutor advised them to buy personal number plates as they not only retain their value but increase in value.

HopeClearwater.....errrr "private plates" because that's what they are. They belong to me, no one else, therefore they are private. Lots of people refer to them as private plates, perhaps it's a saying more local to my area but no need to be rude, eh?

And yes, I did pay for them. Unsure what you mean by then referring to a private school, but each to their own.

I'm not complaining. They're donating money to the DVLA's coffers so we don't have to. Plus it makes it easier to memorise the number plates of the people who are driving like prats.

I have one with my initials, although it's not actually on my car at the moment.

If people assume I am a prat because of it and avoid me, I thank them for that, as they are unlikely to be the kind of person I'd consider worthwhile spending time with and it saves me the bother of finding that out for myself.

Seems a lot of our Ddads had the same idea. Mine bought K80 for me passing my test many, many moons ago, well before text speak was common

I saw an orange TT in the village with "BOY T0Y" this weekend. Made I smile.

I also agree with Flowery.

I don't give a fig what anyone thinks of it and I rarely have motorists close enough behind me for long enough to notice it anyway what with the Prumobile's 350bhp.

I have one on my car Hmm
It's actually DH's but now he has a company vehicle we would have had to pay to keep it not on a vehicle so it's on my car.
I hate it, it makes me cringe with embarrassment when someone asks me my registration number and as my car is so ancient I think it makes me look a complete twat trying to make my car ageless.
DH loves it and spends a great deal of time reading the Sunday Times motoring thing where all the plates are listed for sale. I treat this fascination with the same bemusement as when I discovered one of his lifelong wishes was to have a flagpole (not a euphemism :o)

Urban legend. Baby on board signs are a demonstration of limited motoring skill, allowing talented drivers to note the weak and inept and run them swiftly off the road in to the verge filled with alligators and scorpions.

Some people use them as a notification for the emergency services in case of an accident - however a firefighter ex said that occasionally it means the fighters would be looking for an infant who may not actually be on board - although this puzzled me as most people leave empty car seats in cars :/

Are you my DH? I'm sure he has made this exact statement, word for word....

A good friend of mine and her husband have them. They're not prats.

My sister has one bought by my brother in law. No comment.

Can't think why it bothers you enough to want them banned.

i personally think that we should all have personalised plates that we transfer to the car, rather than the car having them.

this would stop all the problems where vehicles are involved in accidents and then it turns out that "it was sold on" and the new keeper hasnt registered it or has done so with false details.

When you are issued with a licence, you get your own number plate and you are responsible for any car you own for life with that plate. same with businesses- they have to buy a reg plate.

Surely people who have Baby On Board signs also have child seats and religiously do up the straps and anchor the seat?

So the baby would be there, wouldn't it?

It was a big matter of debate on a Walking Dead thread on Telly Addicts. Little baby Judith's child seat was empty, covered in blood but with the straps undone.

Would zombies bother to undo the straps on a snack? I think not and that someone with a bad nosebleed saved Judith.

I imagine zombies don't discriminate between drivers with BOB signs, cherished plates and the rest of us.

I can see how they could have been for emergency services before car seats were about, but I'm pretty sure the signs didn't exist back then.

Personal plates are pure vanity.

However the idea of having a personal plate you move from car to car does appeal. Take it one step further and take an updated test every 5 years - which will weed out all the poor drivers and dare I say it those who get someone else to pass their test for them

Why does it bother you so much? I love mine, have them on both the motorbike and the car so all the nosy Parkersburg round here can't know the ages of them.

And I give a good chink to charity, personally I think spa days are self indulgent, but I wouldn't want them banned!
