To think that personalised number plates should be banned?!!

They are, in my view, ostentatious, utterly pointless and a pure waste of money that could be much better used other ways, even 'selfish' ones like a nice meal out or a mini break. Or non-foodselfish things like charity donations.

If I ruled the world [:)], I'd ban them, or make people buying them have to pay an equal amount in a stupidity and arrogance and tax.

I think I live in the personalised numberplate capital of the UK. SO many of them here. I just find them chavtastic and pathetic in a "Look at me and how much money I've got" kind of way.

They have advantages for the rest of us with conventional number plates:

1. The owner is now slightly less wealthy than they were (especially if it's very rare plate);
   
2. They paid VAT, and we didn't;
   
3. Seconded that it's often a red flag (driving wise);
   
4. If they do a hit-and-run, you'll remember the number plate more easily;
   
5. If (4) is true, they'll probably be known to the police as well.
   
6. If it's bought with their own money, fine.
   
   It's when they're bought on MP's expenses (which I bet some of them are) that it's not right!!!
   
   Wasn't C3 HNE in the news not that long ago? Was that paid for by MP's expenses?

Saw "Dobber" again today and he reminded me of this thread. He is the shining example of personalised reg knobheads!

He drives a MASSIVE american style car. Parks on the yellow zigzags outside school everyday, even if there is loads of space, drives like an ass and I have seen him screaming at people to "fucking move" when they have right of way etc.

His reg is clearly meant to spell "jonny" and jonny was an old school word for condom, as was Dobber.....you see where it came from. Sadly for him, he is now known as Dobber throughout the whole school, even the school secretary, who pretends not to know, mentioned him as that when I saw her in Tesco before Xmas :o

The irony is that in America you don't have to make the letters and numbers fit. You just write out the word, usually up to 8 letters.

Baroness - really? passport covers? The more you travel the more of a pointless PITA they are, as you have to get them out of the bloody cover each time. I average about 1.5 flights a week, and my passport lives permanently in a zipped pocket in my handbag with no cover and it's fine. DH did the same and more for 20 years with his passport in his back pocket and it survived too.

In Knutsford there is an Alfa v6 with the plate V6CUL - bet the owner doesn't know that cul means arse in French.

A Porsche 911 with the plate V11 GRA which made me smile.

I once saw either a Rolls or Bentley with the plate 1 OBE, which I thought a bit naff.
