To think that personalised number plates should be banned?!!

They are, in my view, ostentatious, utterly pointless and a pure waste of money that could be much better used other ways, even 'selfish' ones like a nice meal out or a mini break. Or non-foodselfish things like charity donations.

If I ruled the world [:)], I'd ban them, or make people buying them have to pay an equal amount in a stupidity and arrogance and tax.

Anyone disagree?!

JAG 1 will have cost thousands of pounds.

Having said that DH has a car which has a number plate that refers to the make of car. He didn't buy it, it came with the car. In our case the numberplate is worth more than the car which is a result. I do worry that people will think we're naff though because of it.

No I don't agree. People can do what they want as long as they're not hurting anyone else.

I think you are beyond naff, Little. No, I don't really. Glad you made some money on the back of someone being silly. Unless it is Skoda 1, at which I will laugh.

A business I used to work for had them with the company initials on them for the company cars.

The MD said it was a justifiable expense as it would disguise the age of the cars, which meant that customers wouldn't be judging the success of the business by instantly recognising if the car was one year old or five years old.

Unfortunately they were all cars in particularly identifiable paint colours, those metallic copper and turquoise colours that were popular for one particular year and then never used again, so I still think the game was up with regards to the age of the cars.

I like things like that, saves you time having to speak to a person and then finding out they're a prat. You already know they're a prat the minute they drive up and you can take it from there. It's the same as students who wear flip flops and a chunky knit scarf or anyone with beats headphones.

Its not Skoda1 punk Grin (although that's probably worth a pretty penny too!)

Crikey, judgmental much? Then again, I suppose the same principle can be applied here. Not when someone opens their mouth, but when they begin to type their words on a screen ...

I'm one of those you would really dislike. Two cars both with personalised plates one of which is a 4x4! They were a gift from family members for significant birthdays. They don't spell anything silly just refer to surnames.

I on the other hand dislike 'baby on board' stickers, or 'this car is powered by fairy dust'.

I try not let it get me down as difference is what makes us all er......different Smile

I love how people can decide someone is a twat based on one tiny thing.

A very non twatty family member of mine has one which she got as a surprise gift.

She is far from a twat! It's just a bit of fun.

Some of them make me cringe but others are perfectly fine and fun.

I don't see anything wrong with them, if that is what you want.
I have a personalised number plate, but then I live in Germany where this is easy to do. It helps me remember my number because it is:
Town of registration-my initials-my birthday
I do not think that is unreasonable.

My dad bought me my personalised number plate when I passed my test aged 17. I like having it on every car I have as it now holds great sentimental value

BriantheMole.. when someone judges someone as a twat/prat based on one thing then it shows me too that they are someone to avoid ;)

A good friend of mine and her husband have them. They're not prats.

My sister has one bought by my brother in law. No comment.

Can't think why it bothers you enough to want them banned.

I saw one here the other day said BOLLOX.

It probably cost $25 and it made me giggle.

SCarlet - i think thats quite cool actually A4 PAD :) that sort of thing makes me smile. Have also seen companies with fleets of vans with personal plates - its quite good advertising i guess.

I used to work with fruit flies (as you do) so i would have liked a number plate like FLY1 not sure i would have paid money though

I'm with bionic - personalised plates don't bother me (not that I really pay that much attention, can't think of the last time I noticed any) but fairy stickers on the backs of cars make me extremely cross. As does anything where grown adults act twee and childish thinking it makes them somehow cute and harmless. No, it makes me want to hit you.

LEM in Australia we sell the plates with the car, same as here.

Also here when you buy plates a proportion of the fee goes to charity.

In Switzerland you take your number plate with you which is a great idea.

Don't think they have the wankery ones we have over here though.

DS is always asking what different personalised number plates are meant to say. DH and I always turn to each other and mouth 'stupid c**t'!!

Find it bizarre that people buy them, that and ask that their car comes without the model details on the back, just why?

If it makes you feel any better unless it's and old one which has been transferred the DVLA might have made a lot of money out of it. And I think even just transferring the old one would get them something. No harm if it means a bit of extra tax from people willing and able to pay it.

I have one and i love it. It is the initials of my DD who died and the age she was when she died.

I am neither stupid nor arrogant.

It also makes it really easy to remember your registration.

And I agree they can be amusing/ useful unlike baby on board etc.

Report
hoppingmad · 12/01/2014 12:09

I think they look ok but haven't given them much thought. I don't have one myself as tbh it's the fact my car is being held together with rust that gives its age away - changing the number plate wouldn't make much difference. That and I can't afford to spend that kind of money on a numberplate.

If other people want to buy one then I don't think it makes them a twat
