to feel that it's quite nitpicky here these days?

I've been a prolific poster on here for seven years under various names (Cod. Lavender. Moldies. Shitting elves. Pirates. That fucking bat.)

In the last few months I've been nipped at for so many things - posting style, choice of words, posting in the wrong place... And today I made a mistake and got pulled up quite rightly but then got pulled up again when i tried to rectify it and didn't do so exactly as one poster had suggested. Their point was valid but it kind of eclipses the issue in question.

I've always loved that Mumsnet posters don't allow inaccuracies and are quick to correct them. And I've always tried to take criticism on the chin. But it's been so frequent recently that I've committed minor infractions of unwritten rules, I feel pretty fed up and got at. In forums I've always tried to ignore or overlook errors - I suppose it's easier to ignore them than to go out of my way to correct people, and for what purpose? It feels like there are plain clothes posting police in here.

Has anyone else noticed this or have I randomly become hypersensitive?

I can feel another " mouldies" coming on soon ....

Just saying .

TimeToPassGo · 08/01/2014 18:47

I wasn't here for the original mouldies Drove but I can see things going that way. Could be tempted away myself!

But you know what? MN will still be here, just different faces. Just as it survived the mouldies rebellion Wink

Would there be a mass exodus based on :
Class?
Poor grammar spelling?
Fed up with nastiness?
Fed up because it's not nasty enough?
Fed because you just can't have fun like good old days?

Mintyy · 08/01/2014 19:32

I'm a pedant but tend not to correct other posters on here.

Although I do just HATE textspeak, and so do most others on this forum, and so if it becomes a place that evolves into somewhere where textspeak is used a lot, then that will be a reason why some of us grow to dislike it a lot! . Meanwhile, people who care about this forum will mention that texspeak is unpopular, in an attempt to retain some of the characteristics that make Mumsnet unique.

I think the OP was more about the genuine impossiblity of posting anything that isn't subject to the most nit-picking scrutiny in terms of content.

TimeToPassGo · 08/01/2014 19:50

I agree Minty. The fact it detoured into a thread about spelling and grammar is symptomatic really!

dreamofwhitehorses · 08/01/2014 23:01

If you're looking for a witty and literate talkboard can I recommend not the talk which is a spin off from the old guardian forum

Juno "The ability to speak and write properly makes a person appear to be more intelligent and better educated"

One of the most important things I've learnt is NOT to judge someone's intelligence based on their "ability to speak and write properly".

I know plenty of people, who speak and write beautifully, yet are as thick as mince.

MrsCakesPremonition · 09/01/2014 10:32

Once upon a time the nitpicking was incidental to the flow of the thread, the nitpicking would be nothing more than a molehill which didn't dominate the discussion.
Now some posters seem to keen to turn every minor error from the OP into a fucking great mountain which obscures the original purpose of the thread.
It is rude, unhelpful and unpleasant to read. I also feel that it deters some MNers from starting their own threads.

LetsFaceTheMusicAndDance · 09/01/2014 10:43

Agreed MrsCake

Mintyy · 09/01/2014 13:22

If anyone is still looking at this thread, I just wanted to say that this thread here sums up, very concisely, exactly why Mumsnet is broken for me at the moment.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 09/01/2014 13:23

I don't like that thread either Mintyy but I'm scared to comment on it Sad.

What are your reasons though? (Before I give mine Grin)

Mintyy · 09/01/2014 13:26

Because op makes a wholly reasonable point and any sane person can see where she's coming from, but the replies (especially from the yabus) are stupidly vitriolic and ott.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 09/01/2014 13:28

It's a completely bonkers thread - and it's not going to end well.

I agree with you btw.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 09/01/2014 16:31

It's a ridiculous thread, Mintyy. Not so much the subject, but the responses from both sides. So much name-calling from both. Utterly pathetic. It's OK, although mean, not to have hopped off with the pram, I would have. It's a polarised thing really, you either would or you wouldn't, but neither stance is the 'right' one, just the decent one.

BabyMummy29 · 09/01/2014 17:12

It's the same with so many threads on here. I come in after work, look at the active threads and think "Oh that looks interesting, I'll add to that" only to find the thread has been completely hijacked and now has nothing to do with the original post,

I guess I'd have to be on here 24/7 to have any chance of joining in with a thread.

scottishmummy · 10/01/2014 19:53

I'm not sure that's a fair point, threads like Conversation develop,go off at tangent
What's stopping you posting your own point which is legitimate to do
See thread you like pile in,just post

MadameDefarge · 18/01/2014 20:27

I am out of here now. Really can't stand it any more.

CouthyMow · 18/01/2014 20:36

Nope. Not you. It's been getting worse for the last year, I even took a large part of the year 'off' MN, partly for this reason.

Sparklingbrook · 18/01/2014 20:37

Madame what's happened?

CouthyMow · 18/01/2014 20:41

Retrospective editing of Classics? That's just not on. They are in Classics because they are funny. Cube of poo, booble plate, the poo on the pouffe threads. Pure classic MN. And TSC's minge, who could forget TSC's minge.

MadameDefarge · 18/01/2014 20:46

straw. camels back. Me crying. Time to walk away.

CouthyMow · 18/01/2014 20:54

I don't often pick up posters on spelling mistakes, even though that DOES require me to sit on my hands. It genuinely sets my teeth on edge, and I often won't bother to reply to a post written in text speak. (Unless it is about someone dealing with abuse, or very upset, as the need to try to help them overrides my need for correct spelling...)

But then, I don't send text messages in text speak either. I would rather send two text messages in proper English than one in text speak.
