to think a grown man should be able to buy sanitary towels?

My DH won't buy them for me. So even though he does our weekly shop if I need any I have to go out and buy them separately. He says it's embarrassing looking 'in that aisle'.

Today I'm suffering with a heavy period and cramps and need more towels but I can't be bothered having the discussion with him to try and get him to buy me some as I know he won't, so I'm going to have to go out and get them myself.

Do other men behave this immaturely when it comes to 'women's things'? Or is it just mine? If there was a male equivalent I wouldn't think twice about buying it for him!

I just think some things are private - periods in particular. It would never occur to me to ask anyone to get them for me, it is just too personal, even in a relationship.

Varya · 05/01/2014 12:26

I have bought 'things for my husband' and expect him to do the same for me!

EeyoreIsh · 05/01/2014 12:29

president I'm glad that in my relationship with DH there's nothing that's too personal. When I have a sudden flood of period or during my mc I needed him to buy sanpro. He also does the weekly shop most of the time, so of course he picks up things for me.

BellaVita · 05/01/2014 12:31

My DH has never ever had a problem buying anything like this for me.

Alanna1 · 05/01/2014 12:32

My DH gets them. Often the wrong ones, but he's happy to get them.

DizzyZebra · 05/01/2014 12:32

Yanbu. Mine is totally illogical. He wont buy sanitary towels, but will buy maternity towels. He said "well if in buying maternity towels theyre not going to think its weird theyll just think my partners had a baby".

Obviously in his world, check out staff are incapable of coming to the conclusion his partner has her period though.

DizzyZebra · 05/01/2014 12:34

My ex wouldn't even buy maternity towels though when o was having dd prematurely. He told me i would have to ring his mum because he "doesn't know what you're talking about at all".

i asked what he will do when lily starts having periods. He said he has plenty of time for that but i bet he makes his mum/me/wife do it.

I remember girls at school, years ago now, having this attitude that periods were too 'personal' to mention and getting all embarrassed and coy. I always thought it was a bit of an immature attitude, TBH.

Menstruation is a fact of life for half the population for a significant number of years. I don't understand why some women get so, for want of a better word, precious about it all.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 05/01/2014 12:37

President some things are too personal?

Like what? Sticking his penis inside you? Hmm

sarahquilt · 05/01/2014 12:40

No you're not being unreasonable - that's pathetic. Refuse to buy him some item he really needs and see how he likes it.

RaspberryRuffle · 05/01/2014 12:41

Seriously?! My dad did the weekly shop, all us girls wrote our san-pro order. He bought extra when on offer. No biggie at all. He was more confused by our shampoo orders. Extra volume/frequent use/ no not the one for CURLY hair, Da-ad that's conditioner not shampoo. etc.
DH has no sisters and his mum didn't need san pro, never saw tampons sitting around etc. It would not occur to me that he wouldn't buy them for me, that he would willingly add hassle to my life. ANd if he did I'd be having words.
I've recently got a mooncup, I've told him it's tricky to get the hang of, he's asked how I'm getting on with it and do I need him to buy any other san pro.
President do you tell your DP/DH when you have your (whisper) period? How on earth is that too personal to tell someone you live with, have sex with, may have had children with? It's not like you're asking them to insert it for you!

feelingvunerable · 05/01/2014 12:41

I think its odd.

I don't think the person on the till cares tbh.

BunnyLebowski · 05/01/2014 12:42

President

That shitty attitude is why I was too embarrassed to tell my mum when my period started and bought them for myself from 12-14.

Periods are not dirty or shameful or anything other than completely and utterly normal Hmm.

PresidentServalan · 05/01/2014 12:45

I am not embarrassed by them, I just prefer to buy my sanpro . Always have done. But I wouldn't appreciate it if a female friend asked me to pick them up for her either.

Raspberry I don't have a DP or DC actually because I am celibate and have been for 13 years. Before that I had no issue with sex (quite the opposite) but I happen to view periods in the same way as having a shit - it's a fact of life but one that doesn't need to involve anyone else.

Gruntfuttock · 05/01/2014 12:49

President"But I wouldn't appreciate it if a female friend asked me to pick them up for her either."

I am completely dumbfounded by that statement. I can't fathom the thinking behind it at all. To me, it would be no different to being asked to get a pint of milk or a loaf of bread.

HavantGuard · 05/01/2014 12:49

Presumably you feel the same about toilet paper?

Does that mean you "wouldn't appreciate" a friend asking you to pick up loo roll for him or her either?

Annunziata · 05/01/2014 12:50

DH would die of embarrassment too!

Just stock up in advance.

ems1910 · 05/01/2014 12:51

I have just added sanitary towels to the list as oh has gone shopping. He only looked worried as there are so many different ones so he may ring me from the aisle lol!

My dad used to buy them for me if needed when in his 60s/70s so not a generational thing here.

PresidentServalan · 05/01/2014 12:52

Awful Same way as anyone else. I am no prude, I just don't see what is wrong with getting sanpro yourself.

Awful Which is why I would ensure that I had plenty in advance, it really isn't rocket science IMO. And I have no choice but to go to work even on my worst days so sadly duvet days are not an option.
