Hi Mn Smile

My friend has just finished a 3 day honey water fast and she has lost 7 lbs. Her tummy is flatter and she has lost the constant cravings for carbs

I need to lose an embarrassing amount of weight (40 lbs) and I already have a healthy sustainable weight loss plan set up (5:2 diet + 30 mins daily brisk walk + swimming 2x weekly)

The 'detox' is a cup of hot water with a small spoon of the purest honey you can find, drank 3-9 times a day for 3 days.

WIBU to do this just for a quick drop in the no. on the scale and to motivate me??

I have an event in 3 weeks and every pound counts.

Wow

I'm not surprised she appears to have lost half a stone if she hasn't eaten anything! But in reality she's only lost water and maybe .5 of a pound of fat. It will all go straight back on.

WorraLiberty · 02/01/2014 15:38

YABU

You need to try to think of a healthier way to motivate yourself.

RandyRudolf · 02/01/2014 15:38

It will come back on as fast as it came off. A healthy diet and regular exercise is the best thing.

whatareyoueventalkingabout · 02/01/2014 15:38

YANBU to try! Very best of luck

formerbabe · 02/01/2014 15:39

Sorry, computer went mad!

Your friend lost weight of course...if you don't eat, of course you lose weight! You also feel like shit and put it straight back on!

Oh and 40 pounds to lose is not embarrassing. I am a size 14 and want to lose 3 stone...I am not at all embarrassed by that!

deirdrae · 02/01/2014 15:39

I agree. It will all go straight back on.

Unless will change usual eating habits.

giraffesCantSledge · 02/01/2014 15:40

As a former anorexic I can tell you this will not do any good at all - she will just put it back on. The only reason she has lost weight is that she hasn't eaten! You could substitute honey water for diet irnbru - would get same result. Much like you do when you have a vomiting bug!

deirdrae · 02/01/2014 15:40

And exercise of course!

bluestar2 · 02/01/2014 15:40

This is likely to be nearly all water she has lost and will regain v quickly. Stick to you more sensible plan but if you want to boost numbers then boost the amount of lengths you do or speed you walk at. It will be worth it for long term gain keep at it!!

YouTheCat · 02/01/2014 15:40

Of course if you have nothing but honey water you'll lose a load of weight. But it will all go straight back on the minute you eat like usual again.

These diets are silly fads at best and dangerous at worst.

Farrowandbawlbauls · 02/01/2014 15:40

DON'T DO IT.

You'll put more weight back on when you start eating again because your body will be set in starvation mode and will grab hold of every single calorie it can get hold of until your metabolism settles again.

Eat a healthy diet and move about more - slowly, slowly loose the weight and it will stay off.

stargirl1701 · 02/01/2014 15:40

She has lost fluid. As soon as she starts eating normally again, it'll go back on.

The only that worked for me is more exercise. 50 lengths of a 25m pool every day for a year and I lost 3 stone.

gaggiagirl · 02/01/2014 15:42

Do you want to starve....actually not eat a thing for 3 whole days? Have a good think about it.

You will put it all back on again. Its just water. You could lose maybe 4lbs in your first week on 5:2 and get the added benefit of eating food.

revivingsnowshower · 02/01/2014 15:43

Hi I think you should not do this. If you have a real weight problem you will find it hard to stick to and this could actually demotivate you. I would start on your sensible eating plan right away. For the event half a stone will not make so much difference in how you look if you are quite overweight. I would just take the time to find a really flattering outfit and a nice hairdo. This will make more difference to how you look than 7+/-.

WhoNickedMyName · 02/01/2014 15:44

Oh goody... another ridiculous 'lose weight fast' plan. But hey lets add a few spoonfuls of the purest honey and call it a detox, because that makes it sound sooooo much better for you.

If you starve yourself for three days then you'll lose weight. That's basic common sense. The honey in the drink is probably to stop you from fainting.

MightyMagnificentScarfaceClaw · 02/01/2014 15:44

But she's been drinking water, so why would that be what she lost? I never understand why people say it will go straight back on - not if you eat sensibly and don't binge it won't. Whenever I have wanted to lose weight, like after DCs, I have done it by reducing food. I would find 3 days on just honey hard, I tend to have just one evening meal a day (like the fast days on 5:2) for a week or so to lose about half a stone. I think most people's instinctive problem with this sort of thing is that it sounds a bit eating disordery.

RandyRudolf · 02/01/2014 15:44

50 lengths of a 25m pool every day for a year and I lost 3 stone.

Bloody hell, well done. That would have killed me!

rockybalboa · 02/01/2014 15:45

I have about the same amount to lose Blush. I think the honey and water thing sound like a load of tosh but it will kick start your weight loss so if you want to try it and then do 5:2 then it might help. Or it might just make you miserable...

MinesAPintOfTea · 02/01/2014 15:47

Most of that weight isn't actual fat, its water and food being digested in the gut. Its not a loss of fat, its like changing from weighing yourself dressed to undressed.

Her stomach looks flatter because her bowel is empty, not because she's lost actual fat.

AuntieMaggie · 02/01/2014 15:49

No you shouldn't do it because it fecks up your metabolism not because it sounds a bit 'eating disordery' which eating only one meal a day will also do btw.

The 'water' she has lost is not the same as the water she has been drinking - it doesn't work that way!

Joysmum · 02/01/2014 15:49

She will mostly have list glycogen and it's associated water store.

In order to lose 1lb if fat, you need to consume 3,500kcals less than your body needs to maintain. So dropping 500jcals a week will lose you 1lb of fat, being 750kcals deficient a day will lose you 1.5lbs of fat.

The scales can't be relied on to tell you fat loss. I could weigh myself and then drink a litre of water and gain a kilo, doesn't mean I'm fatter. Scales are great for tracking longer term trends, not giving short term accurate reflections on fat loss.

ppeatfruit · 02/01/2014 15:52

True MightyMagnificent Also her stomach will have shrunk so if she sticks to eating only when she feels hungry and eats consciously her stomach will remain smaller and she'll continue to lose weight.

I lost nearly 3 stone on the Paul Mckenna way of eating which (without the 3 day fast) is as I said above and it also shrinks your stomach.

DontmindifIdo · 02/01/2014 15:53

A few woman I worked with did that diet. They were all hell to work with, and one of the PA's fainted. They all piled it back on, as others have said, it'll be water loss and empty bowels. You get a similar effect from a colonic the day of the event....

You'd be better cutting back sensibly on your non-fast days on 5:2, and doing as much exercise as you can between now and the event.
