To fast for 3 days on only honey water? Friend has lost half stone in 3 days.

Hi Mn Smile

My friend has just finished a 3 day honey water fast and she has lost 7 lbs. Her tummy is flatter and she has lost the constant cravings for carbs

I need to lose an embarrassing amount of weight (40 lbs) and I already have a healthy sustainable weight loss plan set up (5:2 diet + 30 mins daily brisk walk + swimming 2x weekly)

The 'detox' is a cup of hot water with a small spoon of the purest honey you can find, drank 3-9 times a day for 3 days.

WIBU to do this just for a quick drop in the no. on the scale and to motivate me??

I have an event in 3 weeks and every pound counts.

monet I agree these diets are stupid and I would never do one (despite the temptation of quick results) but losing weight is not 'easy' for everyone. I battle constantly, eating healthily and exercising regularly and even my Personal Trainer is confused. THe weight moves slowly if at all and if I have even a couple of days not eating properly LOADS of weight goes on. It can take me 2 weeks to lose a pound but have one day with a pudding and no walk and I put 2 pounds on. Don't be so patronising.

MrsJamieFraser · 02/01/2014 17:02

lucidlady my SIL is 5'7 and wears a size 6, she has a lovely figure and that is my goal weight/dress size.

MrsJ that sounds daft, I'm sorry. I'm 5'10 and look really slim at 14. I do have large feet and hands, though. I'm sure you look great as you are and that size 12 would make you look fantastic! WHat's the BMI of your goal weight?

WhoNickedMyName · 02/01/2014 17:04

Your goal weight is fine for your height, its within the healthy BMI range, but just be prepared that it won't necessarily translate into a size 6. Your SIL may carry her weight differently, be more toned, etc.

squoosh · 02/01/2014 17:04

Keep in mind OP that 120lbs on one 5' 7" frame can look very different on another person of the same height.

mrsjay · 02/01/2014 17:05

she has a flat stomach because she hasnt eaten anything at all it would have the same effect if she just drank water the honey is a red herring to make people think that this way of fasting is amazing who would want to say oh I am not eating i am just drinking water and licking a sugar cube for 3 days look at my flat belly,

Musicaltheatremum · 02/01/2014 17:05

That weight gives you a BMI of 18.7. Right at the lower end of normal. Not sure how old you are but I am 3 inches shorter than you and I would look awful at that weight but I am 50.

SneakyNuts · 02/01/2014 17:08

I'm not sure at 5'7 and 120lbs you would be a 6?
I'm 5'3 and 112lbs and a 6.

Agree with squoosh

TheELFycatOnTheShelf · 02/01/2014 17:10

I'm probably going against the grain a bit, but if you are otherwise fit and healthy it won't do any harm not to eat for a couple of days.

I sometimes take a couple of days out of eating to get out of the habit of eating and snacking. I'll pick a detoxy type drink - could be green tea, lemon water etc. I find I'm better able to judge portion size after this (my issue is oversized meals and a tendency to reach for chocolate when stressed). I wouldn't expect the weight loss to be permanent but that I might lose 3 pounds over that week.

As long as it's once in a blue moon rather than a regular thing to counteract overeating. I'm not sure I would do 3 days, I think 1 or 2 is enough.

WoodBurnerBabe · 02/01/2014 17:15

I'm 5'8" and aiming for 140lbs, I think I'll probably be a size 10 ish at that point. I'm currently 195lbs and wearing 14/16 tops and 16 bottoms. I got to 175lbs last summer and was wearing a 12 easily.

I would make sure you do lots of toning exercise as well.

MightyMagnificentScarfaceClaw · 02/01/2014 17:21

As I said before my way was less drastic, just one meal a day. I did it twice to lose baby weight and neither time did I immediately 'pile it back on'.

Artandco · 02/01/2014 17:32

5'7 and 120lbs would not be a size 6.

I'm 5'4, 108lbs (7.7 stone), and size 8 ( sometimes 6). I'm underweight and trying to gain more. If I was 5'7 I would be very underweight.

Sarsaparillajones · 02/01/2014 17:39

I lost 3 1/2 stone through ww and I found it hard enough to stick to that! I would be an absolute nightmare on no food at all -really really ratty. You should lose a fair amount at the start of any diet especially if you increase exercise too. Best tip from me would be get a copy of 30 day shred (around £5) and start now you will lose inches and flatten out your tummy. Honestly i couldn't believe how much better I looked from a few weeks of shred it really does work and you only need 30 mins a day.

monet3 · 02/01/2014 17:47

Cardibach,
Maybe you have an unrealistic goal?
Maybe your healthy eating is not as healthy as you think
Muscle weighs more than fat so sometimes we look better but weigh more.
Loosing weight is easy. Look at the celebrities in the jungle, they all lose weight and none of them are doing exersize, I know they are only having rice and beans BUT it still boils down to the fact that they are eating less. Eat less and move more = weight loss.

cardibach · 02/01/2014 21:54

monet3 that is rubbish. My goal at the moment is to get out of the obese BMI category. I eat porridge for breakfast, Salad and lean protein or soup for lunch, a healthy cooked-from-scratch meal in the evening and something sweet at some point. I drink wine at the weekends. I eat around 1500 calories a day, which at my height and weight ought to lose me 2lbs a week. I walk every day, do a training session once a week and nothing shifts. Losing weight is, perhaps, easy for you. celebrities' in the jungle are not a model for life, believe it or not. Don't be patronising and naïve.

ppeatfruit · 03/01/2014 10:14

A very good way of losing weight quickly is-

!. Give up too many coffees and teas every day. Drink water and or green\mint teas. no sugar in them also cut out high sugar and 'diet' fizzy drinks.

  1. Take a nettle or turmeric extract to speed up your metabolism.
  1. DON'T EAT AFTER 7.30 pm Or only have some fruit then. Oh also eat fruit on an empty stomach.
monet3 · 03/01/2014 10:30

Card, I was giving an example of when people eat less they lose weight.

Good for you for having a healthy diet, most don't.

You could try swapping the big meal in the evening to lunch time and have smaller portions. It worked for me.

ppeatfruit · 03/01/2014 10:39

monet3 The eating less thing does work but if you combine it with allowing yourself to feel hungry, eating slowly and consciously and then stopping when you are full (even leaving food on the plate Shock) then yo can cope with eating less because your body gets 'tuned' to it.

Just eating less won't work otherwise.

When I began doing the above (giving up coffee etc. e.g.) I lost a stone without trying or exercising more than usual. I wasn't planning to either!

NurseRoscoe · 03/01/2014 11:15

If it helps at all, I lost 3lb not eating for one day (not purposely, was ill) and went straight on to slimming world when I was better, kept it off and lost an additional 1lb in 3 days. Everyone else is right, if you do something like this you will put all the weight back on straight away.

Slimming world is a nice diet to do, it helps you adapt meals you like into healthier versions, the family can have them too (my 2 year old is having the lasange and garlic bread with me tonight!) and you are allowed a small amount of chocolate, crisps, cheese etc so you don't really get cravings. It helps to change your lifestyle and you forget you are actually on a diet after a while.

It doesn't work for everyone but may be worth a try rather than silly faddy thing like your friend did.

NurseRoscoe · 03/01/2014 11:16

When I say doesn't work for everyone I meant some people don't like it/don't get on with it not that it actually doesn't work, just realised how badly I worded that

ppeatfruit · 03/01/2014 15:07

You only put the weight straight back on if you don't CHANGE your way of eating for the majority of the time ; which is why for some reason most people are unable to do it. Some people eat rubbishy food all the time except when dieting (unless they're on diets like The Cambridge types which are not healthy IMO).

While I'm not defending fasting a lot of people do it as part of their religion and seem to live ok.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 03/01/2014 15:10

Well, she won't have lost that much weight in body fat. Some of it will just be an absence of gut contents.
I don't think it would do you any harm tbh. But I'd split the days and keep doing it for a while (ala 5:2)

aloysiusflyte · 03/01/2014 15:34

I'm 5'6 and 126 pounds (ish, currently nearly 20 weeks pregnant so getting bigger every day!)
That's not far off your goal weight and I'm afraid to say I have never been a size 6 at these measurements, I'm usually a fairly conventional size 10-12.
As others have said up thread, we all carry weight differently so I think a size 6 is rather unrealistic.
As for weight loss, starvation is never good, slow and steady wins the race Smile

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 03/01/2014 15:53

Are you a hummingbird, OP? If so, that would be fine. If not, try another diet would be my advice.

sandalsinthebin · 03/01/2014 15:56

At first glance there I thought op was considering a 3-day Holy Water fast Grin
