To fast for 3 days on only honey water? Friend has lost half stone in 3 days.

Hi Mn Smile

My friend has just finished a 3 day honey water fast and she has lost 7 lbs. Her tummy is flatter and she has lost the constant cravings for carbs

I need to lose an embarrassing amount of weight (40 lbs) and I already have a healthy sustainable weight loss plan set up (5:2 diet + 30 mins daily brisk walk + swimming 2x weekly)

The 'detox' is a cup of hot water with a small spoon of the purest honey you can find, drank 3-9 times a day for 3 days.

WIBU to do this just for a quick drop in the no. on the scale and to motivate me??

I have an event in 3 weeks and every pound counts.

Oh and I'm maintaining the loss so it effin' works! So YANBU

Doobiedoobedoobie · 02/01/2014 15:55

The problem is, I doubt it'd start your diet off on the right foot as yes, you'd lose a lot to begin with, but then you'd put most of it back on again and feel disheartened

Stick with the diet plan you've made... It's a good one and looks sustainable. If you want to slim down with quick results before this event in 3 weeks cut out the carbs a week or so before hand and you'll have no bloat on your stomach and look great in your dress. I can understand the temptation to starve yourself but tbh cutting out the carbs will work just as well if you want a quick fix solution for a flat tummy plus you get the added bonus of actually, you know, eating Wink

ppeatfruit · 02/01/2014 15:55

You certainly shouldn't work when fasting you should be in bed or as near as possible Grin btw

ChatNicknameUnavailable · 02/01/2014 15:55

Three days is too much IMO.

If you want to cleanse yourself and kick off a detox and healthy eating plan then just do one day. Drink lots of water with lemon juice on day one. Then reintoduce food gradually...on day two keep with the water and just eat lightly, about 800 calories and all natural food - salad, fruit, an egg, plain chicken etc. No/very limited carbs. Then the same on day 3 but 1000 calories. That should be plenty for your body to have a break and detox but without starving yourself.

WorraLiberty · 02/01/2014 15:55

I'm sure it'll take longer than 3 days to shrink a stomach enough to affect appetite.

stargirl1701 · 02/01/2014 16:00

I had motivation - my wedding! I got up at 6am every day before work and 10am on the weekends. It was easy in the Spring & Summer but much harder in the Winter because of the dark, cold mornings - it was still dark after my swim!

HesterShaw · 02/01/2014 16:04

OP, I just lost half a stone in 10 hours with the winter vomiting plan. I imagine the effects will be similar, in that as soon as I start eating again, I will regain it, no problem.

I'd think of a more sustainable plan if I were you.

SuburbanRhonda · 02/01/2014 16:05

You don't say what the event is, but if you go for a week without carbs just before it, I hope it's one where you don't have to talk to people or be in close proximity to them.

Your breath will smell dreadful (no way of putting that nicely), and will definitely detract from any positive effect from weight loss!

ChatNicknameUnavailable · 02/01/2014 16:07

I don't think occasional fasts do any harm btw, but not 3 days.

I tried the 5:2 diet but for me, having just that tiny amount of calories is worse than not eating at all. So now I'm doing intermittent water fasting.

I started off with a three day 'detox' like below. One day of just water and two days of reintroducing natural foods gradually. I didn't lose a huge amount, only 2lbs, and i did keep it off. Now I do 1/6 water fasting. So I eat healthily for 6 days and every Wednesday I water fast.

So far (7 weeks) I've lost about 10lbs. I genuinely do feel better and energised for the one day fast too. By 6pm on a fast day I'm fantisising about breakfast the next day...but when breakfast comes I'm fine and am happy with a bit of porridge and fruit.

I think it's helped my relationship with food. I've realised that nothing bad happens from not eating for one day, and the day after a fast I'm better able to recognise when I'm full, I think due to the fact my stomach is shrinking.

I have more weight than that to lose and have joined a thread on here 52lbs in 52 weeks - which is a hell of a lot more sustainable. Great group of people using myfitnesspal and nattering to keep up motivation.

I cannot possibly imagine you would keep that weight off and then you would have the demoralising effect of seeing the weight go back on.

I've been calorie counting and exercising for 10 days an I've lost 2lbs already. Slow and steady wins the race and you are more likely to keep it off by changing your long term eating habits.

ouryve · 02/01/2014 16:17

Heck, I can lose 2-3lb just by having a really good shit. Of course your friend lost weight by not eating for 3 days. It won't be fat, though and she'll have received no nutrition, in that period.

frenchfancy · 02/01/2014 16:19

Stick to your original plan of 5:2. I lost 33 lbs last year on it and it has stayed off. Don't go for the quick fix.

WoodBurnerBabe · 02/01/2014 16:19

52lbs in 52 weeks

nilbyname · 02/01/2014 16:25

I think a juice or raw food detox is a good luck start to a healthy eating plan, but the honey water thing or mapyl syrup with cayenne pepper, it's a fad to get you into a dress or something. It's. unsustainable.

specialsubject · 02/01/2014 16:31

boneheaded idea. Your friend should be ashamed of herself for abusing good health like this. Crash dieting is stupid and crash dieters end up fatter.

you and she need to eat healthily and move around. And this 'event' - unless there is a magic door which only lets in those under a certain size, you don't need to be thinner for it.

oh, and detox is cobblers too. Your body does it automatically. Look in the toilet.

MightyMagnificentScarfaceClaw · 02/01/2014 16:32

As I said before my way was less drastic, just one meal a day. I did it twice to lose baby weight and neither time did I immediately 'pile it back on'.

CoffeeTea103 · 02/01/2014 16:36

Yabu, it's stupidity and unhealthy.

SuburbanRhonda · 02/01/2014 16:38

special, I remember a TV programme about "Dr" Gillian McKeith and her stupid food regimes, full of "detoxing" and "cleansing" foods and all that malarkey. They asked a real doctor what was the best thing to take for detoxing and he said "water".

Obvious, really, as are all the comments about losing 2-3 lbs by going for a really good dump Wink

monet3 · 02/01/2014 16:42

Why oh why do people do these stupid diets!!

Its so easy to lose weight, eat healthily and move around more. The only thing stopping you is your brain.

WorraLiberty · 02/01/2014 16:48

I honestly don't know anyone who has been on a diet just once.

They've all needed to diet again and again, and most of the people I'm thinking of I've known since we were teens and we're all 44yrs old now.

OP if you're already looking for a quick fix solution to 'motivate' you, I'd say you're probably not mentally ready to start this 5:2 diet.

Perhaps you need more time to get your head around losing weight.

MrsJamieFraser · 02/01/2014 16:54

Thanks for posting everyone, I have read the entire thread and the general consensus is don't do it - slow and steady is better.

Event is DH's industry awards ceremony. I have completely forgot about, with the xmas preparations etc.

I am 5'7 and weigh 160 lbs and size 14, I'm trying to get to 120 lbs and size 6. But for the event I'd like to drop a dress size to 12.

OP posts:
lucidlady · 02/01/2014 16:57

Why do you want to be a size 6? That's not healthy at your height, surely?

Nanny0gg · 02/01/2014 16:57

Isn't honey, sugar?

Nanny0gg · 02/01/2014 16:58

Size 6??

Really?

I'm 5'3'' and I feel really slim at a size 10. They'll be nothing of you if you're aiming for Size 6 at your height.
