I can buy a higher welfare chicken for less £ than a lower welfare turkey. And it will be lovely.

We are having a big organic chicken and ham :)

Mealiepudding · 22/12/2013 20:50

We're having chicken too.

I've always loved chicken and when I was little it was such a luxury and very expensive so we only had it at Christmas.

It's always a 'proper' Christmas dinner to me (with all the trimmings of course).

My family don't like turkey anyway.

PistletoeAndWhine · 22/12/2013 20:51

Ffs never...proof I'm desperate for sleep- I just read your post as "big orgasmic chicken" Grin

AwfulMaureen · 22/12/2013 21:27

I bought a lovely corn fed chicken today...bigger than I usually buy and much better looked after than the shitty turkey "crown" that I could afford. I am pleased with it! I love chicken.

JugglingUnwiselyWithBaubles · 22/12/2013 22:26

We're veggie these days but I reckon chicken is tastier and juicier than turkey, and goose is nice too and more traditional.
We'll be having nut roast with our roasties and veg, and possibly veggie toad in the hole too, as we like Yorkshire pud Xmas Smile

SanityClause · 22/12/2013 22:29

No one likes turkey.

Have chicken. (Or guinea fowl, like us.)

DragonMamma · 22/12/2013 22:30

We have turkey and beef. Because beef gravy is far superior to manky old pale turkey gravy and we are greedy

EmmaBemma · 22/12/2013 22:31

I haven't had turkey on Xmas day for years and years. Usually it's beef or lamb, but it's also been pork. This year it's chicken, as there's only going to be five of us. Nice big slow grown free range chicken from a local farm, yum yum.

Chippednailvarnish · 22/12/2013 22:45

Turkey tastes like chicken gone wrong!

We are having roast pork with crackling and a Aldi four bird roast to forfill the turkey tradition. Bearing in mind it will probably be grim, it was a cheap option...

StarsUponThars · 22/12/2013 22:47

DH bought our free range organic chicken today, so WE ARE ON Grin.

Fark.

Goose that feeds 5 for £45?

My goose that feeds 5 (and DS 5) will be £75!!! Which I thought was reasonable Xmas Sad

Farkity fark fark.

There had better be a golden egg in there.....

AwfulMaureen · 22/12/2013 22:58

God my ENTIRE Christmas food shop was less than £75!

StarsUponThars · 22/12/2013 23:01

My chicken was only £16 Smile, chicken is the new turkey.

DH is going to Jamie Oliver it up. Or something.

Well, we are having Lasagne on Xmas Day!! ShockShock

lubeybooby · 22/12/2013 23:03

I have a lovely big duck for £14

usually have a big chicken, so this is a little bit different while still being a bit cheaper than a turkey

Going away after xmas too so not bothered about having lots of leftovers

StarsUponThars · 22/12/2013 23:03

But is it chicken or turkey lasagne, Ruprek Winkt?

OP posts:
StarsUponThars · 22/12/2013 23:04

Ruprekt · 22/12/2013 23:25

Beef lasagne with DH's homemade pasta!

LoveAndDeath · 23/12/2013 00:37

YABU. If you don't have turkey on Christmas day you are far more likely to be struck by lightning.

TheDoctrineOfSanta · 23/12/2013 07:00

BigHairyLeggedSpider · 23/12/2013 07:49

I am having a Capon. Fancy work for Cockerell. its massive and a bit pricey but is cheaper than goose and nicer than turkey and feels a bit more special than chicken. One year I will havr venison though I suspect I will have mow down bambi in my car to do so.

girlywhirly · 23/12/2013 08:52

Chicken here as well. A large 5lb weight free range one from our local butcher can yield up to 8 portions of meat, and is around £22. No point in our having a turkey for two people even if we liked it. I wouldn't miss turkey if I never had it again, tbh. I like the chicken leftovers though.

ouryve · 23/12/2013 09:00

I now have a 2kg salmon joint in the fridge Xmas Grin

But we love turkey, so will be in M&S as soon as it opens, on boxing day, for a half price one!

ilovesmurfs · 23/12/2013 09:04

ruprekt we are also having lasagne on xmas day!

we asked the kids what they wanted. plus we can make the beef and sauce etc the night before so we can just layer it up and cook it through to heat it on the day.

we will have a lamb roast on boxing day.

BraveMerida · 23/12/2013 09:10

Yanbu

I thought of having chicken for Christmas, it's the perfect size for a smallish family gathering. So much cheaper as well. And turkey basically tastes like chicken anyway.

Previous years, we had tonnes of leftover Christmas turkey which we were eating until we were sick of the sight of turkey....until the next Christmas.
