I can buy a higher welfare chicken for less £ than a lower welfare turkey. And it will be lovely.

Cook whatever you like. My sister had mince and dumplings for their christmas dinner last year.

Ive also got chicken for this year.

StarsUponThars · 22/12/2013 11:14

And the prize for least contentious AIBU of the year goes to...drumroll...me Grin.

We are eating out this year, mum and I are having beef and SIL is having sea bass.

Tbh, I much prefer chicken to turkey anyway but when smothered with gravy and the rest of the meal I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. As always, it's best to spend on what matters and trim back on what doesn't.

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/12/2013 11:30

We are having turkey, I tentatively suggested chicken but apparently turkey is compulsory.

Sad

So I bought Buck's Fizz for me while I'm cooking it.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 22/12/2013 11:38

If you steam the turkey before putting it in the oven. It doesn't dry out, at all! It's lovely (and I never used to like turkey).

StarsUponThars · 22/12/2013 12:08

How do you steam the turkey, Pobble?

Beef here!

BikeRunSki · 22/12/2013 16:20

Christmas dinner in my house will eaten by a 2 yo, a 5 yp with no appetite, DH and a veggie (me). DH and the DC will have locally raised free range chicken breasts.

I prefer chicken but it just doesn't feed enough people. A large chicken feeds my family of four with no leftovers...so its not practical for Xmas.

MrsCampbellBlack · 22/12/2013 17:27

I just do 2 chickens

pigletmania · 22/12/2013 19:26

We're having chicken too, dh and DM do not like turkey

PistletoeAndWhine · 22/12/2013 19:49

Chicken, pigs in blankets, gammon, root veg mash, sprouts...and potato waffles! Key lime pie for after as christmas pudding is boak!

Hassled · 22/12/2013 19:55

The only reason I stick to turkey is for the leftovers. I love cold turkey - chicken as a roast is probably nicer, but you don't get the same quality sandwiches the next day.

Snowdown · 22/12/2013 19:55

No turkeys in this house...we've gone for rib of beef but wouldn't object to chicken. Enjoy!

ouryve · 22/12/2013 19:58

Have what you like.

And a good chicken is a revelation. It's actually rather tasty!

dogindisguise · 22/12/2013 20:00

My mum always cooks chicken as my sister doesn't like turkey (I'm veggie).

helenafalco · 22/12/2013 20:02

Duck for me turkey for DH. Craving lamb as I haven't had it for a while so might do that as well.
Sod tradition go with what you fancy Smile

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 22/12/2013 20:04

How do you steam the turkey, Pobble?

vickery.tv/philsxmas/item/phil-s-perfect-roast-turkey

If the link doesn't work google Phil Vickery steam turkey.

You basically steam it on the hob first, it really works! I never liked turkey until we cooked it this way and now it's the only way I cook it! Never had dry turkey since.

Rhubarbgarden · 22/12/2013 20:06

Seabass in vanilla sauce here because dh doesn't like turkey and as he does the cooking, he gets to choose.

I secretly love turkey though.

GoldenGytha · 22/12/2013 20:11

We always had chicken for Christmas Lunch growing up,

No one likes turkey, so never have it, about 20 years ago my mother started doing beef for Christmas, and that is what I always do now.

Don't get why some people get so het up about turkey on Christmas Day, have what you like, even if it's beans on toast!

fatlazymummy · 22/12/2013 20:19

Cook whatever you and your family like! I am doing chicken or pork for my meat eaters, and I will be having cauliflower cheese .

mmmmtoffee · 22/12/2013 20:21

I was looking forwars to Turkey but as I split with dp 2 weeks ago,and just dds (5 and 1) and stucj in a refuge we are having a chicken. I cant wait as the refuge will be empty, so just the three of us even though no onw is exited for Santa

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 22/12/2013 20:25

We're having three bird roast because my husband likes it particularly. Nobody else is particularly bothered so we just go with that. With Yorkshire puddings which are mandatory, apparently.

I'm going to get a turkey crown when they're reduced; I like turkey but only the breast and it seems such a waste.

I cooked goose one Christmas and managed to stab myself in the wrist really badly when I was carving it. For such a large bird, there isn't much meat and, it should never be carved by a left-hander, I think. Blush

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 22/12/2013 20:27

mmmmtoffee... cross posted with you, sorry. I hope that your first 'free' Christmas is better than you hope it will be and that 2014 is a very good year for you and your children.
