So, we've just finished redecorating the lounge in time for Christmas, but haven't yet had any Christmas visitors - that all starts next week.

Mil came to babysit for us yesterday and when we returned she casually mentioned that she had invited sil over while we were out.

Immediately I thought 'oh, I would have liked to see her first reaction to our new lounge, Christmas tree etc'.

This probably showed on my face because mil asked if I minded. Of course I said no (damn it!!) and just asked what sil had thought of things.

Dh thinks I'm being daft but I've spent ages choosing colours, furniture etc and putting it all together. Part of enjoying it for me is seeing it finished and watching our friends' and families' faces when they first see it.

It's our first Christmas in this house. I think she should have realised I might be put out. Aibu?

Oh God. I hate people showing off their houses.

It would never occur to me not to invite someone around because the house person might want to see the 'reaction' to new decorations.

Redecorating is a bit like holiday photos. We all love to see our own but other peoples are frankly not that interesting.

YABU. This sounds harsh, but honestly your MIL and SIL don't care how you decorate your house. It's for you to enjoy.

I am also wondering in what way this is MIL related?

If she was just a babysitter, would you be as upset?

Or is it that you don't like your MIL for some reason?

In the great scheme of things, this does not sound like a huge issue and it is rather nice that your MIL thought your SIL would be impressed enough to invite around. :)

Kind of both really, we've decorated for us, so it feels like our home and not someone else's leftovers and I still would have done it even if no one would ever see it.

But... it is nice (just a tiny bit) when your family come round and say how nice it all looks, isn't it?

Also, kind of rude to invite people over to a house you are just babysitting in, no?

I would not be remotely interested in going to see someone's Farrow and Ball.

You are being daft. I must admit that I never even really notice the decor in other people's houses. It just doesn't interest me at all, and I wouldn't want my nose pushed in it by the owner (I would just give the odd polite nod, but that would be it).

How about just being pleased your mil babysat for you?! This is a really irritating post to be honest...sorry! Talk about a first world problem!

YABU and a bit hard work tbh, I'm assuming she invited sil round for some company, while she was doing you a favour, and nothing whatsoever to do with your decorating

If you are desperate for the oohs and the ahhs then next time you see the person ask then what they think of the room.

It sounds a bit self indulgent and obsessed to be annoyed you didn't get to see the looks on 1 persons face when she saw your lounge.

I wouldn't be annoyed at missing out SIL reaction, but I'd be a bit narked at MIL inviting SIL over without checking first.

OP I'd agree it's rude (to say the least) for an employed babysitter to invite people round without express permission but a close member of your family inviting another close member of your family is neither here nor there. TBH the fact that you think it might be any sort of an issue makes it seem like you have more deep-seated issues with your MIL.

Of course it's nice when people admire your home.

But it's never nice to make them admire your home or expect them to admire your home.

Of course it is but I'm sure SiL will still say nice things! You really don't need to show her the room yourself! It's nice of her to babysit with MiL.
