So, we've just finished redecorating the lounge in time for Christmas, but haven't yet had any Christmas visitors - that all starts next week.

Mil came to babysit for us yesterday and when we returned she casually mentioned that she had invited sil over while we were out.

Immediately I thought 'oh, I would have liked to see her first reaction to our new lounge, Christmas tree etc'.

This probably showed on my face because mil asked if I minded. Of course I said no (damn it!!) and just asked what sil had thought of things.

Dh thinks I'm being daft but I've spent ages choosing colours, furniture etc and putting it all together. Part of enjoying it for me is seeing it finished and watching our friends' and families' faces when they first see it.

It's our first Christmas in this house. I think she should have realised I might be put out. Aibu?

*massive snob - bit sure where that word went?? Ruddy baileys.

Huge thanks to the (very) few who get where I am coming from btw. I'm sorry but I won't post pics though. I'm that paranoid.

Also, all the yabus will just love the chance to say how crap it is, I couldn't take it!

Sorry love. You're being a silly sausage.

Ifcatshadthumbs · 20/12/2013 15:42

Well unless your Christmas tree came out your foof it's not really the same but yes I would have been annoyed. As it was mil and SIL came to the hospital together and mil hogged ds so no one got a look in. Can't say I blame her he was just delicious.

HunterWellies · 20/12/2013 15:50

I am now trying to erase the image of birthing a fir tree. Ouch.

Well YABU Op but also rather lovely and funny at the same time about recognising it.
I bet your lounge is beautiful, I wish I could afford to decorate.
Be prepared though for many posts from people who haven't RTFT who'll give you a flaming.
Joins Op with a Baileys.

HaroldTheGoat · 20/12/2013 15:52

Your being so funny I am coming over to your side.

HunterWellies · 20/12/2013 16:16

Ha! Could this be the first ever aibu win-round? Must be Christmas Xmas Smile

This viper doesn't agree. If mil asked her family over to my house when I was out I'd be fecking cross on a normal day. If I'd just done house up I'd be even crosser.

For starters does dear sil not want to talk to you?!? This is weird!!!

TheListingAttic · 20/12/2013 16:32

Ha! Could this be the first ever aibu win-round?

I do love a sporting OP! (Mine's a double...?)

sykadelic15 · 20/12/2013 16:36

Haha I'm surprised by the comments here. Especially the ones where people don't notice decor, and especially at Christmas, 'cause I definitely do. Smell is my big "thing" though.

The OP went to the effort to make her house look nice, and understandably wanted to be the one to "show it off". Instead someone else took her "glory" and she feels a bit bummed about it.

I get it... I would be too, but also annoyed that MIL invited someone over without my permission. Doesn't matter that she's family, it's still rude unless there's an open door policy in place (though to be fair I don't like people popping by unannounced at random times of the day/night which is totally ridiculous I know but it bugs me when we're sitting around relaxed, the bell rings, the dogs spaz out and we have to pause the movie/show).

All that said, given the replies here, you're BU to expect she would realise you would be put out. NOT unreasonable to feel put out though.

  • I was overseas when my husband closed on our new house. I was gone for 2 months and all his friends had come over and knew where everything was (when I was there actually walked to a cupboard to pull out some folding chairs I didn't know we had!) and I had no flipping idea... that ticked me off of course but I couldn't help being away (my dad was sick) and I couldn't expect my husband to keep the house locked up tight while I was gone.
usualsuspect · 20/12/2013 16:44

YABU.

Are you for real?

Bumpsadaisie · 20/12/2013 16:53

Please OP. Post some pics. I want to see it in all its glory! (I am not joking btw!)

Floggingmolly · 20/12/2013 17:01

I doubt I'd have actually noticed in your sil's place, tbh...
You make it sound like she locked you out of your own house and watched your children open their presents from Santa Hmm do you get out much?

HaroldTheGoat · 20/12/2013 17:12

Come on now, MIL was doing the OP a favour babysitting and really honestly I can't believe anyone thinks it's rude to ask her daughter, the sister of the husband, over to keep her company. Come on.

She didn't ask cliff Richards over to rub his bum in her new sofa.

OP you should have imposed a black out, papered over the windows allowed no one through your threshold.

School boy I tell you.

HyvaPaiva · 20/12/2013 17:53

YABU.

Why would anyone except you care what your living room looks like?

Genuinely don't get it

Confused
patienceisvirtuous · 20/12/2013 18:56

OP, yabu as you now concede but I do like it when people complement me on my apartment so I can understand the sentiment behind your OP - therefore yan totally u

ThePartyArtist · 20/12/2013 19:08

I think it's a bit unfair of MIL to invite someone else to your house but this might be more the norm in your family. She probably didn't realise you'd be wanting to do the big unveil - or was also wanting to show it off. I think it's more an oversight than anything malicious but I agree when you've put a lot of work in you want to share it yourself not have someone else do it.

HunterWellies · 20/12/2013 19:24

Don't know about my mil but my mum would be in ecstatic if Cliff came round to rub his bum on my new sofa... I would not.
