Buggies must be folded by law, if a wheelchair user wishes to board

I know this can be a hot topic so thought I'd share that stagecoach have new signs on their buses stating that buggies must be folded by law if a wheelchair user wishes to board. Let's hope it's actually enforced.

If it is any comfort to some of the posters on here, I teach Disability Awareness lessons to Year 9s. They get it so much more than some of the supposed adults on here.

OddFodd · 19/12/2013 22:10

I think it's real Upthechimney

Although threads like this are hard to read (particularly as the mother of a disabled child, although my DS's disabilities are hidden), it's very revealing to hear what people say when they feel they're in a 'safe' environment. Scrape off the veneer of respectability and reveal the bigot underneath

SpikeyChristmasTree · 19/12/2013 22:11

Fucking hell, 'thankfully wheelchair users are few and far between'?

OddFodd · 19/12/2013 22:11

Laila - in god's name, would you please have the decency to read the fucking thread

RadgeWeeMidden · 19/12/2013 22:12

Actually - I asked that not to be inflammatory or to insinuate that I thought that wheelchair users should not take priority. I asked out of genuine curiosity to know what reasons are given for them having automatic priority. I've seen women struggling a number of times with shopping, buggy, more than one child. Is there not a point at which the needs of the mother should considered too?

Then read the thread Radge there are plenty of very valid points there.

Radge - Because nearly every time they get on a bus the mother will not have to accommodate a wheelchair user. On a busy bus, a wheelchair user will have to do so on nearly every journey. So whilst the mother may be inconvenienced once in a blue moon by a wheelchair, this rule allows the wheelchair user to function on public transport. It's not a level playing field.

Dawndonnaagain · 19/12/2013 22:15

Thankfully wheelchair users are far and few between and don't all expect others to move out of their way

  1. Disablist.
  2. Reported.
  3. Read my daughter's post and then come back and say that you're right.

Having a baby is not a disability. Of course the wheelchair user gets priority; it's a no brainer.

IcaMorgan · 19/12/2013 22:18

It wouldn't surprise me if one of the people being nasty about wheelchairs is the woman I had trouble with on a bus 2 weeks ago.

I was already on the (packed) bus in my wheelchair when a woman with a buggy wanted to get on, the driver told her she couldn't come on because of the wheelchair and couldn't fold it because there was no room. The woman started shouting that why should her baby have to be out longer and have its tea late because of a damn wheelchair. When I challenged her on this she screamed at me and shouted at me about what right did I have to take up 3 buggy spaces with my damn wheelchair? I just stated its a wheelchair space not a buggy space each time she shouted at me until she finally gave in and backed off the bus.

How long a wait would she have had for the next bus? 30 mins? 1 hour?... No 4 minutes was all she would have had to wait.

Bit different to the other week when the driver refused to tell the 2 buggys to fold and left me at the side of the road and I couldn't get on the next 2 buses either so it was the 4th bus along before I managed to get on one

Binkyridesagain · 19/12/2013 22:18

Are people really this fucking stupid?

Its a wheelchair space, in law, the priority is for wheelchair users.

It would be so much easier to just ban buggies from the space altogether.

Moxiegirl · 19/12/2013 22:19

Laila best hope you're not ever in that situation eh?
Unbelievable Hmm

OddFodd · 19/12/2013 22:21

Radge - you're articulate and clearly fairly well-educated. Are you trying to tell me that the Equality Act passed you by?

Here's an article which explains why you're breaking the law if you refuse to fold your buggy for a wheelchair

IcaMorgan · 19/12/2013 22:24

Laila it is a designated wheelchair space NOT a buggy space
