No one I know can afford to be SAHM. Wages over 20k are seen as damned good, not disparaged. Anything over 30k makes you well off. I don't even know where Lancashire's private schools are, or anyone who hires a tutor. Nannies are another urban myth that don't exist around here, it's all after school clubs and nurseries. I feel completely alienated from this place at times. Am I just a common northerners out of place on mn who should migrate to netmums, because the shockingly snobby attitudes at times tell me I should.

OP posts:
Mattissy · 15/12/2013 00:19

I'm a northerner, it bloody annoys me when southerners think we're all common, bloody annoys me double when northerners say it.

scottishmummy · 15/12/2013 00:19

Mn is a social window on someone else life.mn is crushingly middle class
I work ft,never had moment guilt about it and never will
The joy if mn is the ability to neb in on someone else life,in you do what way

andagiraffeinapineappletree · 15/12/2013 00:21

Is it the threads you are on? maybe thats all more common in the baby threads? Don't really see it on the threads I look at, but I hardly ever look on aibu or chat.

MyMILisfromHELL · 15/12/2013 00:21

Yanbu. MN is very snobby. Loads of rich 'b' 's on here who think the sun shines out their arseholes.

Mattissy · 15/12/2013 00:24

Exactly Burton, I earn well over 30k, know plenty in private schools with nannies etc. Likewise I know plenty in nowhere near those circumstances. They're all just people, some are lovely, some not so, happy to talk with them all.

I'm never intimidated by someone with more money than me, why would I?

MyMILisfromHELL · 15/12/2013 00:24

Having said that, it doesn't stop me from being on mn.

scottishmummy · 15/12/2013 00:26

Also, full of competitively poor folks chumping on how it's grim innit
The mn chicken can feed family, make soup, risotto, and costs tuppence
Then there the competitive mammies who cut their hair, eat gravel, kids wear 2nd hand casting shilling a week

MistressDeeCee · 15/12/2013 00:28

No, YANBU.

You must know why you feel as you do. & that's fine - we all feel and view life differently.

BuffyxSummers · 15/12/2013 00:28

Eat gravel Grin

TheBitchesOfWeestick · 15/12/2013 00:28

We were evicted from our hole in the ground Hmm

mrsjay · 15/12/2013 00:29

scottish mummy you make me laugh your way with words is amazing, yes you do get competative (sp) frugality on here too

AgentZigzag · 15/12/2013 00:33

Maybe you have something there andagiraffe, the OP could be drawn to the threads because, if she admitted it to herself, she actually aspires to the lifestyles of the wealthy and uses looking down her nose at them their choices to feel better about herself Wink

MistressDeeCee · 15/12/2013 00:33

I think I like MyMILisfromHELL & scottishmummy's answers the most tho Grin I nearly "LOL'd' but remembered I'm on mumsnet so accordingly, I'd better not

scottishmummy · 15/12/2013 00:34

It's the fuckin chicken that finishes me.some lassie spilling her guts life is tough
Cue some mc burd harrumphing one chicken can make dinner, soup, sanies, risitto
Aye that's empathy!telling some one skint they can sook a fuckin chicken and name risotto

ZombiePenguin · 15/12/2013 00:35

YABU.

I've seen many, many MNers not in those positions.

I am not a Northerner (I am in a crap area in London, with the highest percentage of pupils on FSM, for example). My husband is unemployed. I am lucky enough to earn £23,000 a year. My ex doesn't pay maintenance so we are skint and my DD has ASD.

I have never felt alienated. Some people are very rich. Some people aren't. Either of them are accepted.

mrsjay · 15/12/2013 00:35

oh Scottishmummy you are right 10 things to eat with a standard chicken then suck the bones dry

ZombiePenguin · 15/12/2013 00:41

Grin at the chicken. The MN chicken must be gigantic because I've never seen one which lasts more than a meal or two, plus a bit of soup although that might be because we're a greedy family let alone years.

notthefirstagainstthewall · 15/12/2013 00:48

I get you. It is Daily Mail in reverse sometimes. The swathes of opinionated masses can get you down.I hate the Mumsnet is the oracle feel on here. I tune in alot but often disagree with loads of people.
However there is usually a argument to be had and sometimes a genuinely a different outlook helps.

mrsjay · 15/12/2013 00:49

a woman I work beside bored me one afternoons with her 101 of chicken meals she could get 6 out of 1 chicken, we can get 2 and maybe a sandwich

ShadowsCollideWithPeople · 15/12/2013 00:49

Well, YANBU to feel that way, because your experience of MN is your experience, so only you know how you feel about it. I will say that my experience differs hugely though. I have received so much incredible support, when coping with my Nan's cancer, my DP's horrible and life limiting condition, my Dad's broken jaw after being randomly attacked and punched in the face. I'm working class through and through, we were piss poor until my Dafs

Everyone feels that sometimes I think.

I think you are noticing the posts that make you feel at odds more. There are many people on benefits or lower salaries here.

Also worth remembering that a big contingent will be in London and £30k doesn't go very far if you are private renting and have kids.

grumpyoldbat · 15/12/2013 00:55

I'm not a SAHM, I earn a lot less than 20k, I live in a council house a lot further North than you OP, I don't have a nanny, didn't go to private school my children won't either, we don't even have a local Waitrose.

Yes some posters have said vile things but that's not everyone.

scottishmummy · 15/12/2013 00:56

The joy if mn is the randomness.chewin fat wi folk you might meet or associate with
The mc aspect crushing sometimes, but it's worth a laugh too
I like the sm,I simply cannot understand you,too scottish.do punctuate more...aye but you know you don't likey my posts funny that

ShadowsCollideWithPeople · 15/12/2013 00:57

Bugger. Until my Dad's businesses started doing well when I was 15.

MyMIL... 'Lots of rich 'b's on here who think the sun shines out of their arseholes'. Really? Where? And why do you bother posting here if you dislike all the other posters so much?
