To think psychics are all fakes?

I don't like that they take peoples money when they are in a vulnerable place, lost loved ones etc. It's immoral. Just my opinion.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Talking about Derek Acorah

You'd think he'd see it coming.

roadwalker · 11/12/2013 09:54

Some of them are very cruel. My friend lost her son in a car crash
She spent hundreds of pounds 'talking' to him through a psychic

I didn't know what to say to her, it would have been cruel to tell her it was all a rip off and she wouldn't have believed it anyway

In the end the psychic called a stop to it saying he had nothing more to say, I think she had run out of stuff to make up but not before she had made a lot of money

Gileswithachainsaw · 11/12/2013 09:55

normal I can well believe that. But I do still believe that recorded or not there have been cases. That's not to say that there have been hundreds of liars and opportunists. But somewhere out there are genuine people who have this ability and do try to use it for good.

There are so many parts of the brain that we don't use or can't access aren't there? It stands to reason to me that somehow through some slight mutation or in some cases trauma or whatever that these parts get accessed and able to be used.

AnAdventureInCakeAndWine · 11/12/2013 09:56

Most of us make money out of what we do, surely? Derren Brown can actually do the stuff he makes money out of (conjuring and psychological trickery). Doctors can actually diagnose and treat people. Retail assistants in Boots can actually sell me stuff. Secretaries can actually type letters and organise diaries. Psychics can't actually do what they make money out of claiming they can do.

mrsjay · 11/12/2013 09:56

enb that is hilarious by the time i got to the thread about it all the jokes were taken

lottieandmia · 11/12/2013 09:56

Darren Brown, as far as I know tries to show the power of the mind and also that things like mind control are possible. He doesn't fully explain what he does to everyone though or how.

AnAdventureInCakeAndWine · 11/12/2013 09:56

"There are so many parts of the brain that we don't use or can't access aren't there?"

No, that's a popular myth.

lottieandmia · 11/12/2013 09:56

Darren *

LaRegina · 11/12/2013 09:56

I used to be friends with a 'psychic'. She learnt to be one by paying to go on a course of 'psychic workshops' which were supposed to teach you how to 'harness your undiscovered psychic abilities'. It taught her how to do cold readings. But I think she did actually believe she was 'harnessing' something woo Hmm.

lottieandmia · 11/12/2013 09:57

Stupid autocorrct!

lottieandmia · 11/12/2013 09:57

Ok I give up with this iPad

HettiePetal · 11/12/2013 09:57

Darren Brown makes money out of what he does too though

Darren Brown never lies. Ever. Even if he doesn't explain how he's done something, he never pretends it's "magic". It's an illusion....entertainment.

But some people who are psychic don't discuss it with other people at all

How do you know such people exist then if they don't discuss it with other people at all?

AnAdventureInCakeAndWine · 11/12/2013 09:58

lottieandmia, nor do Paul Daniels or Penn and Teller or Dynamo or David Copperfield or [insert long list of names here]. But they are upfront that it's all trickery.

ANormalOne · 11/12/2013 09:59

It doesn't stand to reason, it's not a reasonable belief that a traumatic brain injury or 'mutation' would give people the ability or 'unlock' the ability to speak with the dead.

Gileswithachainsaw · 11/12/2013 09:59

There are many many things that scientists don't know or haven't discovered yet about the human body. It's taken hundreds /thousands if years to get this far and we are no where near knowing everything. If we did then why is research still on going. Out if the six billion people on the planet is it not possible that web one can do something tht others can't explain?

mrsjay · 11/12/2013 10:01

nor do Paul Daniels or Penn and Teller or Dynamo or David Copperfield or [insert long list of names here]. But they are upfront that it's all trickery.

this it is all smoke and mirrors but we know that they just don't tell us how they do it sometimes to entertain people, would be a bit rubbish if we all knew how penn and teller did a trick

MonkeysInTheFog · 11/12/2013 10:01

Ah yes. Sylvia Browne.

Told a woman on the Montel Williams show that her dead fiancé was in water somewhere and would never be found. And even when she found out that the man in question was a firefighter who had died in the WTC, tried to wriggle out of it.

Told the grieving parents of a teenage girl that she'd been shot. The girl had dropped dead in her bedroom. No gunshot wounds.

Told the relatives of Opal Jo Jennings that the child had been sold into sex slavery in Japan. Her body was eventually found less than a mile from her home.

This woman made millions from torturing the bereaved and STILL people wanted to believe her. I hope I'm wrong about the whole afterlife thing. I hope there is a hell because if there is, she is burning there and so, eventually, will the others like her.

curlew · 11/12/2013 10:01

"But somewhere out there are genuine people who have this ability and do try to use it for good."

Can I ask why you think this?

ANormalOne · 11/12/2013 10:02

Is it not possible that I have fairies living at the bottom or my garden? Or a giant invisible purple dinosaur that craps money? And just because it hasn't been explained or we don't know yet, doesn't mean that you can insert woo and declare it a supernatural occurrence.

Gileswithachainsaw · 11/12/2013 10:03

Because I just do.
I believe in a lot of things that others don't.

MonkeysInTheFog · 11/12/2013 10:03

Curlew - because it's a nice idea and people will believe what they want to believe even when there's no evidence whatsoever. Amazing.

ANormalOne · 11/12/2013 10:04

You believe it because you believe, wow, very logical.

curlew · 11/12/2013 10:06

"Because I just do.
I believe in a lot of things that others don't."

What's led you to that?

lottieandmia · 11/12/2013 10:07

Some people do sense things that others don't. Some people don't want to experience these things and this is an entirely different situation from cruel money grabbers extracting large amounts of money from vulnerable people.

One things I would also say is that I would never consult a supposed psychic myself because personally I don't think any good can come from contacting the dead whether in truth or hypothetically. If I had a loved one who died I would know it was better for them to have gone to a better place and would not want to look for any sign.

MonkeysInTheFog · 11/12/2013 10:08

Would you believe someone who told you they could fly with their invisible wings, Giles?
