I don't like that they take peoples money when they are in a vulnerable place, lost loved ones etc. It's immoral. Just my opinion.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Persona- don't you understand? The spirits don't come through for the medium's personal gain......oh, wait.......

MonkeysInTheFog · 14/12/2013 13:19

Even very intelligent people are taken in by the techniques mediums use, even though most of those techniques are laughably simple.

Eg:

Psychic: Did he work as a postman?
Punter: No he was a miner.
Psychic: Yes that's right because he's showing me black dust.
Punter: Wow!

Honestly, these people must utterly crack up laughing at how easy people are to fool.

Another example is when James Randi recorded a sitting done by Maureen Flynn. The punter in question was very impressed with the reading - particularly how accurate MF was with names. Nobody was more surprised than the punter when the tape recording proved that rather than having "immediately come out with relevant names", MF had in fact suggested something like 37 names in order to eventually get lucky with a couple.

People forget the misses and remember the hits.

I think it's also hard sometimes and sort of embarrassing to tell the psychic they are wrong. We have a natural urge to be polite and help them get it right.

So "he was a postman".. "Well no, but he did deliver some leaflets once for his building firm"

MonkeysInTheFog · 14/12/2013 14:14

BOB - yes. Spot on.

perplexedpirate · 14/12/2013 22:19

I don't think people that are taken in are necessarily gullible.
I think they are vulnerable, grieving and afraid. That's what makes it so unforgivable to use that to exhort money from them. Sad

Frizzbonce · 14/12/2013 22:48

perplexedpirate - Agree . I don't think people are necessarily gullible - just vulnerable. Nobody ever goes to see a psychic when their life is going well so just saying 'You've had some sadness in your life haven't you my darling? oh and you'll have to make a decision soon but don't worry - it'll be the right one. Oh and here's your granny! She had a lovely laugh didn't she?'

You think - actually she was a miserable old cow.

'Oh and she's telling me you're not to worry.'

Etc Etc.

Well, they are gullible. But vulnerability breeds gullibility.

I think it's more that they are not necessarily stupid.
