To think psychics are all fakes?

I don't like that they take peoples money when they are in a vulnerable place, lost loved ones etc. It's immoral. Just my opinion.

Thoughts? Opinions?

what monkey said folk like to feel special it is stroking ego really,

MalcolmTuckersMistress · 11/12/2013 09:35

I think those who have convinced theirselves that they have psychic abilities and don't make money from it are the ones who actually know it's wrong. They just take more pleasure in the attention they feel it brings them rather than being as callous as exploiting people!

LambinsideaDuckinsideaTrout · 11/12/2013 09:36

I agree Derren Brown is far more skilled at it than any other I have seen.

The only people I know who visit these people ( I refuse to call them psychic) are people who have lost someone or people that can't make a decision for themselves. It is exploitation and so easy to do. I once told a complete stranger loads of stuff about himself in a pub just based on the fact that he reminded me of someone. I told him his name, age, when he first came to England (Indian origin), names of his family. He was totally freaked out, it was so easy...and he was not a woman. I know several men who are equally as gullible.

curlew · 11/12/2013 09:37

"But some people who are psychic don't discuss it with other people at all."

Do they only communicate with other psychics, then?

mrsjay · 11/12/2013 09:38

this, Dh aunt wasn't nasty person i guess she just liked to make herself and other people feel good I just don't understand how they get started IYSWIm what motivates somebody to do this it must be a proper belief in themselves,

mrsjay · 11/12/2013 09:38

I wonder if it is just Blind Faith ?

meganorks · 11/12/2013 09:39

Yes, all a load of shit
I have a friend who seems perfectly intelligent and well educated, but every so often visits psychics. I was gobsmacked when she told me. But she is convinced its true, that they knew things they couldn't possibly, she gave nothing away etc. The very fact you visit a psychic gives something away - no one goes when they ate perfectly happy with no major decisions looming
...

lottieandmia · 11/12/2013 09:39

Why would people all feel the need to communicate personal things about themselves? For some people it's not welcome and they don't want it.

Financeprincess · 11/12/2013 09:39

Here's something else about Psychic Sally: she, too, is deluded.

The episode of 'Psychic Sally on the road' that I watched featured the somewhat portly Sally shopping with her husband and cheerfully loading the trolley with cakes. Cut to Sally complaining that she wishes that she were slimmer but that it must be a metabolic, hormonal or psychological problem. Quote: "I can't accept that it's because of greed, eating too much. That can't be it".

Her husband's face was a picture.

Cut to Sally being wheeled in for bariatric surgery (stomach stapling).

The significant thing for me is that she, and presumably the people who believe in her, are the type who think that everything is controlled by mysterious external influences.

MonkeysInTheFog · 11/12/2013 09:40

Giles - no. There are no confirmed cases of psychics helping police in any real way. There are plenty of psychics who leap upon high profile cases in the hope of a bit of publicity, and pro-woo'ers will often cite instances where a psychic got a couple of "hits" but no crime has ever been solved by a psychic. And that's what it comes down to isn't it? If they were any good then you'd think one would say "the body is buried at X location and the killer lives at Y" but no....all they can do is make up bullshit that they make fit AFTER facts have been discovered.

Vile, vile people.

scottishmummy · 11/12/2013 09:40

For as long as there is someone who believes in gifts/powers there someone to exploit them
Let's face it psychics don't hold free drop-in sessions to use so called gift fir no financial gain
Save your money, dry your tears, don't open your purse to any quack

AnAdventureInCakeAndWine · 11/12/2013 09:42

Depends on your definition of "fake". I don't think any of them have genuine psychic powers, but I do think some of them are self-deluding rather than actively dishonest.

MonkeysInTheFog · 11/12/2013 09:44

If it was discovered that some people DID have a gift that they could use to benefit people/solve crimes etc I'd have no problem with them charging.

Doctors and surgeons and vicars get paid. Everyone has to eat and pay bills.

If someone recommended a plumber to you on the basis that "He must be the best because he doesn't charge" you'd laugh, surely?!

lottieandmia · 11/12/2013 09:45

People like Derek Accorah or whatever are clearly attention seeking charlatans. I was appalled at him saying stuff about Madeleine McCann recently. But I think there are people who don't discuss their experiences with others at all and don't want to sense things outside the norm.

WorraLiberty · 11/12/2013 09:47

YANBU

There's no such thing as a real psychic...though many people are deluded.

curlew · 11/12/2013 09:47

As Derren Brown says, many psychics help the police by ringing up, saying "Do you need any help?" "No, thank you" "Oh, OK, then".

Gileswithachainsaw · 11/12/2013 09:48

exactly lottie

It's seen as a curse by so many. It's not about winning lottery numbers or revealing dark secrets. People don't want a queue of people at the door asking impossible questions. I expect most true pysicics don't want profit and only use their gift to help people in subtle less obvious ways. It's the old saying. With a gift comes responsibilities. You just can't go interfering and disrupting a destined chain of events to make money or to reek revenge. The respect and appreciation would soon turn to resentment and hate when people realise that they can't stop things from happening.

lottieandmia · 11/12/2013 09:49

Darren Brown makes money out of what he does too though.

HECTheHeraldAngelsSing · 11/12/2013 09:49

Oh yes, I think they are. But I don't think all of them are knowing, cynical fakes. I think there are many who truly believe they are genuine. But what they all have is the ability to read people really well, a good understanding of human behaviour and a way of speaking that makes the listener feel they have been given information that the 'psychic' couldnt possibly have known.

ANormalOne · 11/12/2013 09:49

Giles There are more psychics who have 'helped' police with cases and lead them completely up the garden path. Like Sylvia Brown who told Amanada Berry's mother, one of the three girls who was held captive for ten years in America, that she was dead, so the mother died thinking her dead was dead, when she was alive and it wasn't the first time either.

www.theguardian.com/world/2013/may/07/sylvia-browne-amanda-berry-cleveland

Or who harass the family of missing people;

Or who generally cause a lot of harm to vulnerable people;

Enb76 · 11/12/2013 09:50

YANBU - people who believe in psychics are deluded. In fact, all "woo" is delusional.

mrsjay · 11/12/2013 09:51

least Derren Brown is honest about what he does,

ANormalOne · 11/12/2013 09:51

Her dead was dead? That's what I get for not proof reading posts.

ZingChoirsOfAngels · 11/12/2013 09:53

of course they are fake.
Patrick Jane always says so
