Confused

It mostly doesn't taste of wee bites of nice, normal food but instead gelatinous mush with indistinct flavours

OP posts:
Snowbility · 08/12/2013 20:34

I wouldn't make my own puff pastry but I buy butter puff pastry - it's fabulous and while life may be too short for some too stuff a mushroom, I hate eating shit food and as my dsis says shit tasting food is the waste of calories, my waste line can do without. If you like processed party food go for it...why not? I usually eat before a party if I know the host doesn't cook because I don't expect the food to be great and I need to line my stomach for the excessive amount of alcohol I'm likely to drink. I don't judge her, I just don't wish to eat it.

magicberry · 09/12/2013 00:01

The food in the Iceland ad even looks revolting. God knows what it tastes like. Whoever heard of prefrozen Eton mess? Confused
Don't mind a decent premade sausage roll though, but don't like cheap sausage

Theodorous · 09/12/2013 08:26

Don't even get me started on Iceland wouldn't shop there if I was paid to

God forbid. And that's what this sneery OP is all about really. An opportunity to show off about home cooked organic stuff being tastier than "common people's food". It's generally like your very gifted child. Perfectly nice but always enhanced in the eye of the creator into superhuman.

You can keep your organic smuggery thanks, the hoi polloi sound like their parties are much more fun rather than smuggery buggery bake offs.

SirChenjin · 09/12/2013 10:21

Quite agree Theodorous.

I shopped at Iceland (loud and proud) for my 40th - had a large number to cater for and a budget, so put on a buffet of the usual sausage rolls, spring rolls etc and made up sandwiches and had the big birthday cake. Everyone seemed to have a great time (it was an 80s theme night and we all had great fun reliving our respective youths) - and quite frankly, if I thought that anyone was sneering at the food being from Iceland dahhhling, then they could go to hell.

Are there people who are so shallow that they go to a party that someone else has gone to the bother of throwing and sneer at the buffet? Hmm

DuckToWater · 09/12/2013 12:21

I agree, OP. The frozen stuff from Iceland in particular looks horrible in the ads- none of the really processed stuff looks or tastes that good though, even from Waitrose.

I don't mind if someone else serves it and I would eat it at a party and not moan about it, but I'd make most things myself if I was doing it, ok I might buy sausage rolls (Greggs unbeatable IMO) and ready made filo pastry and some other ready made things, but there's no need for an entire spread from Iceland.

If I was going to have tons of people for a big do, I'd get caterers. If I couldn't afford that I wouldn't bother with the do.

DuckToWater · 09/12/2013 12:22

and as my dsis says shit tasting food is the waste of calories

WORD.

MortifiedAnyFuckerAdams · 09/12/2013 12:29

Im doing a buffet tea on the 19th and was just planning on Icelanding It, but have been shamed away now!!

DuckToWater · 09/12/2013 12:31

My MIL regularly caters for 30 people on Boxing Day, not a prawn parcel in sight.

Table contains something like a ham, poached salmon, potato salad, cucumber salad, beetroot & feta salad, carrot salad, crusty bread and butter, a cheese board, Christmas cake, stewed fruit, trifle, cream.

SirChenjin · 09/12/2013 12:46

If you couldn't afford caterers you wouldn't bother with the do?!

Good for you.

SirChenjin · 09/12/2013 12:47

MortifiedAnyFuckerAdams - don't be shamed! Remember the very true saying - those who matter don't mind, and those who mind don't matter.

Gileswithachainsaw · 09/12/2013 12:50

mortified don't worry about it. Sure I don't enjoy it but in all honesty I'm
Not there to eat I'm there to see friends or family. And just because we don't like it doesn't mean we judge who provides it. We just personally done like it :) but that's out problem no one else's

SirChenjin · 09/12/2013 12:52

Exactly - it's the problem of the sneerers and nose wrinklers, not the hosts Smile

Yanbu if you're talking about Iceland shite. But yabu if you're talking about waitrose M&S or tesco finest, and it all depends on what you buy as well I suppose.

That's a good point harry

I used to work in a cafe and the owners ran a catering business too. They used to do some prep sometimes in our kitchen. It was the same frozen crap :o

cantbelievemyeyes · 09/12/2013 13:10

Oh my eyes! Packs of frozen sandwiches? Mini Lasagne Bites? What is this cack?

noddyholder · 09/12/2013 13:12

It's revolting. Cheaper to make your own and healthier and tastier.

Roussette · 09/12/2013 13:22

I am not a sneerer... I am happy to be asked to a Do and enjoy whatever's there to eat and drink... it's the company that matters and no way would I look down on Iceland food if that's what someone does.

It's just that if I do a get together... I don't try and recreate Iceland stuff... yes I would make sausage rolls but I would also just do a big cheeseboard and homemade dips... crisps, pita breads blah blah... it's just I couldn't face some of the frozen stuff you can buy if I'm the one doing the party. I'd rather eat a third as much but something not frozen with essence of prawn in. It's not showing off... I enjoy throwing homemade stuff together, that's all.

Bumblequeen · 09/12/2013 13:23

I would eat ready made food at a party but would not serve this to my guests.

I would cook with help from dm and dsis or use a catering company.

DuckToWater · 09/12/2013 13:56

Ducktowater - but how do you know the minimum wage carefree/vol au vent assemblers will be any better than the ones employed by Ocado or Iceland? Or the ingredients for that matter?

Because I'd get a locally run family owned cafe to do it whose food is amazing and state from where they get the ingredients, and the food would be nothing like the menu selection you'd get from Iceland.

noddyholder · 09/12/2013 15:37

Iceland its not snobbery or sneering not to eat it it's not that cheap for how bad it is. Full of crap

halcyondays · 09/12/2013 15:38

Yabu, you can't beat a cream cheese jalapeño.

Snowbility · 09/12/2013 16:28

I don't think serving Iceland food would be any cheaper than making your own would it?
Why would you think premade party food would taste anywhere near as good as homemade, doesn't matter whether you buy it from Iceland, Waitrose or M&S, it still tastes processed. If you're ok with that who cares.

Bue · 09/12/2013 16:32

YANBU. Also, it is all one colour. I have never understood what is appealing about a spread of party food that is fifty shades of beige.
