To think most premade 'party food' is completely rank

Confused

It mostly doesn't taste of wee bites of nice, normal food but instead gelatinous mush with indistinct flavours

Moondog "Reflects current obsession with choice.
I'd rather one or two nice home made things than ten different sorts of indiscriminate brown stuff"

Exactly my thoughts! The Iceland adverts make me feel physically sick & the marks & sparks one isn't much better.

moondog · 07/12/2013 19:44

I only ever do salmon and/or caviar blini.
I can do them well and churn out dozens of the buggers.
Never any left.

nancerama · 07/12/2013 19:45

I love a sausage roll.

float62 · 07/12/2013 19:45

YANBU - The one's I've tried have always been rather yucky and have never lived up to their inviting description. Nothing to do with snobbery at all (I'm rather looking forward to defrosting and eating my £1 profiteroles all alone, not for sharing!!). I'm sure there must be a couple of offerings that are as tasty as they sound and more importantly I'm sure they're massively convenient for a party and probably look (and possibly even taste!) better than some home-cooked spreads. But please can we not say that mainly, as stand alone cuisine, this party food stuff tastes really good.

Thisisaghostlyeuphemism · 07/12/2013 19:46

Excuse typos - can I come to your party?

There's a reason we dont eat premade party food everyday. It's because its rank mush.

Badgerwife · 07/12/2013 19:47

I made a point of never going to Iceland on the basis that their adverts look disgusting. Until I discovered that they also have 'normal' chocolate cheaper than anywhere else.

I'm an unapologetic food snob. Also, there's nothing simpler and more delicious than making your own sausage rolls with a shop-bought roll of puff pastry and some frankfurthers.

winklewoman · 07/12/2013 19:56

moondog, do you make your own blinis or buy them, if so where from? Do you toast them before using them if you use the ready made and can you do this the night before?

gordyslovesheep · 07/12/2013 19:56

I'd go very hungry at your house Moondog!

Cleorapter · 07/12/2013 20:03

Oh and tesco's finest coconut prawns are pretty amazing.

AnnabelleLee · 07/12/2013 20:15

Well can people not tell us we don't like what we've said we like then? Hmm
You don't have to like it, or buy it, but don't tell us that it is objectively terrible, some people like lots of it, or certain things.

dementedma · 07/12/2013 20:40

I used to do all my own stuff for Xmas eve catering but seriously CBA so raided M&S today and bought some tasty looking bites.
3 for 2 at the mo do saved a fair bit too

17leftfeet · 07/12/2013 20:42

When it's a £1 a box I don't actually care

That's what wine is for!

Greatdomestic · 07/12/2013 20:56

My DH makes a mean sausage roll. They are the stand out hit of any buffet we ever have and pre-packed just can't touch them.

I'm going to go for home made nibbles this year - mini quiches anyway.

MrsPnut · 07/12/2013 21:18

I have stood in waitrose the last few weeks looking at the party food and still haven't bought any of it. I would usually buy some stuff premade but I haven't seen anything that grabs my fancy.

fatlazymummy · 07/12/2013 21:35

I never fancy Icelands party food either, though I have heard some people say it's nice.
I will be getting some party foods from Sainsbury's /Tescos though. I'm not having a party, but they're nice for lunches.

moondog · 07/12/2013 21:43

I make them winkle. Do them beforehand and assemble them just before eating. They 're laughably easy to make.

deepfriedsage · 07/12/2013 22:02

Has anyone tried the advertised M&S scallops on pea, they look so nice. I also like the look of the Iceland chip, pea and fish. Every year without fail we get the Brie and cranberry parcels, so nice.

plantsitter · 07/12/2013 22:07

Oof, all these people going to parties

Mia4 · 07/12/2013 22:27

YABU lol, I love Tescos and M&S. My friend makes her own stuff and it's grim, gross. Oily, bland and just inedible.

Snatchoo · 07/12/2013 22:29

I love party food! We're having an Iceland party on Xmas eve, it's our thing. Easy and yummy - the duck spring rolls are gorgeous.

Some of you on here are outrageously snobby!

Snatchoo · 07/12/2013 22:31

Badgerwife - you call yourself a food snob yet make sausage rolls with frankfurters?!?

Taffeta · 07/12/2013 22:36

I'm not a fan of standing by the oven all night. I have 3 or 4 awesome assembly canapés I make that are v popular. Do all the prep before so it's just building. Less hassle than oven timers etc.

HoHolepew · 07/12/2013 22:37

I had Icelands mini chocolate eclairs and they were lovely. Really lovely.

I like Iceland. They have some truly hideous things for sale (chicken tikka lasagne ffs) but they also sell normal stuff.

I can't afford Waitrose or M&S, I despise Tesco with a passion and Iceland food was great last year, all guests were pleasantly surprised when they were told it was an Iceland special :D

I hate cooking (love baking weirdly) so anything that can help me to avoid anything other than necessity in the kitchen is ok by me!

Aldi are doing party food this year, I don't recall it from last year, I may have a look what's on offer as their seasonal stuff is usually good quality.
