To think most premade 'party food' is completely rank

Confused

It mostly doesn't taste of wee bites of nice, normal food but instead gelatinous mush with indistinct flavours

Yet, when presented with homemade Delia smith style sausage rolls, honey and mustard sausages, fresh tuna sweet corn pasta complete with fresh herbs and toasted pine nuts and other lovingly prepared fresh tasty food, no one touches it.

Gileswithachainsaw, I would go for that! I love party food but that's making me hungry wants.

My friend fancies herself 'queen bee in the kitchen and always brings her own versions. I think she thinks they are as lush as your food sounds but the truth is they are grim and bland and you can never taste much but a burning taste. :( It's better if we all bring party food from a shop, she's been known to throw strops when people bypass her dishes or just try and leave. One year she pretended something was shop brought and went furious when people took a bite and threw away the rest-she thought people just were funny about homemade food but even thinking it was from M&S people found it gross.

Snowbility · 08/12/2013 10:23

I don't cook for people who don't appreciate homemade - no problem buying them shop bought I just don't want to eat it.

usualsuspect · 08/12/2013 10:30

I will eat home cooked or premade.

I'm not a food snob though.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 08/12/2013 10:45

My neighbour makes amazing homemade sausage rolls.

nearlyreadytopop · 08/12/2013 10:56

I love the idea of party food but am usually disappointed.

How to make the perfect sausage roll?
Parents have just had a pig butchered so mountains of sausages to use.

SirChenjin · 08/12/2013 11:00

Homemade or shop bought - I'm not fussy. I'm there to drink, eat and most importantly chat to friends. The fact that someone has gone to the bother and expense of putting on a party is very much appreciated here.

LynetteScavo · 08/12/2013 16:40

Exactly, SirChenjin.

The thing about parties is I never remember what the food was like(unless it's utterly appauling and that's only ever happened twice - I'm happy with a packet of onion rings and a spring roll, me) or what anybody wore.

I do, however, remember people who were nice and friendly. Smile

I love a bit of beige. It's all part of Christmas IMO.

Especially the Lidl cream cheese jalapeños.
I reckon I could eat a whole box of those babies if I really put my mind to it.

KrabbyPatty · 08/12/2013 17:26

The Iceland ads on I'm a Celeb make us laugh. Some of the things look positively gynaecological, but the best of them all is the fish, chip and blob of mushy peas. That can't taste good, surely?

We're having a party next weekend and my dh is making absolutely everything from scratch. It will be incredible, but if it were down to me, I'd be buying a job lot from M&S.

YoDiggity · 08/12/2013 17:27

YADNBU.

MrsCampbellBlack · 08/12/2013 17:36

I think m&s party food used to be nicer but like a lot of their stuff, its gone downhill.

I stick to blinis and homemade sausage rolls with lots of fresh sage - delicious.

Roussette · 08/12/2013 17:43

Sausage rolls are a doddle to make! Choose your sausages (good quality), skin them, add any extras you want to, unravel pre bought puff pastry, cut, lay the sausage meat down it, cut again and DONE. Ready for cooking. Far far far nicer than anything you can buy.

Those cheap bought sausage rolls are revolting.

Rubybrazilianwax · 08/12/2013 17:48

I spread mustard thinly on pastry (ready made) then add my sausage meat. A little sprinkle of poppy seeds after brushing with egg and you have some lovely little s rolls. I made a load last week and have them in freezer for christmas. Another tasty and easy one is baked potato halved and loaded with bacon, spring onion and cheese. Again you can frreze a big tray of these ready to go

Rubybrazilianwax · 08/12/2013 17:50

Ooh and courgette fritters are easy peasy and very yummy. (Add curry powder to the batter)

usualsuspect · 08/12/2013 18:00

I do know how to make sausage rolls.

I just cba.

MrsCampbellBlack · 08/12/2013 18:05

I wish I cba - I'd be half a stone lighter after Christmas if I didn't make them.

reelingaroundthechristmastree · 08/12/2013 18:07

Who said 'Life's too short to stuff a mushroom'?
Shirley Conran?

Well, she was right.
I buy as much as I can that's premade, have already bought little sausages wrapped in bacon for Christmas, in the freezer now.

SirChenjin · 08/12/2013 18:48

Those cheap bought sausage rolls are revolting

They are not - they are lovely. An essential part of any buffet imo. Life is too short to faff about skinning sausages.

Roussette · 08/12/2013 19:08

Each to their own. I would rather nowt than eat the £1 for 200 cheap frozen sausage rolls - total waste of calories IMHO.

usualsuspect · 08/12/2013 19:13

Well we don't all have time, money or inclination to make organic, free range sausage rolls from scratch.

usualsuspect · 08/12/2013 19:15

If you are going to.buy pre made pastry, you might just as well buy the sausage rolls ready made.

Roussette · 08/12/2013 19:17

Agreed, usual. The ones I make aren't organic or free range ... nuffink like that. I just don't like the taste of the bought ones or the sausagemeat they use in them, that's all.

Roussette · 08/12/2013 19:19

I don't like cheap sausagemeat... the sort they use in frozen sausage rolls. I like a meaty sausage! (which is why I plonk it in premade pastry with added ingredients). I don't cook everything from scratch! I just happen to do this!

MrsCampbellBlack · 08/12/2013 19:19

I make my own as like a lot of sage and not too fatty meat.

But this is mn, a greggs' sausage roll is a thing of ridicule but a homemade delia one is an object of beauty Wink

Sunflower49 · 08/12/2013 19:39

YANBU they're all totally unappealing to me too!
It does vary depending on where they're from but I've never liked no matter the cost or who has served them to me!
