To buy us a Hudl each?

I have been hankering after a tablet of some description for a while so thought I'd investigate the Hudl. I didn't realise how cheap it was, and as it turns out I have enough Tesco vouchers to buy three of them.

I suggested to DH last night that it woudl be an ideal present for the older Dc (9 and 11), it woudl solve many fights over screen time (they are allowed an hour each on the family pc but it always causes rows). They would love it.

DH agrees that they woudl love it but is reluctant to buy them both one as my mum has promised to buy DS1 a laptop for his 12th birthday (next Sept). DH thinks that the tablet woudl therefore be surplus to requirements and a waste.

My arguments for this are:

-I have a netbook and still want a tablet, they have different applications. I wouldn't be comfortable with DS1 having his laptop in his messy bedroom, for eg, but he can take a Hudl up with him.

-Nine months is a huge amount of time when you're 11, and it's a bit shit to be told you can't have something because you're waiting for something almost-but-not-quite the same, amost a year away.

-If I have one and DD has one, DS1 will spend a huge amount of time asking to borrow them.

-I'd quite like the glory, tbh, after my Mum swooped in over a year ago and promised this fabled laptop Angry.

DH is happy to be convinced, and I'm still working on him. He doesn't 'get' stuff like this, he only has a very basic phone and only got a personal email address two years ago. He despairs at the fact that we have a pc, netbook, phone and kindle. Bizarrely, he's a software engineer.

I think this is a much better thing to buy than oodles of stuff that no one needs. I was quite excited at finding what is almost the perfect gift IMO, especially as it won;t cost anything.

i got my phone and my hudl to speak to one another...all to do with hotspots and tethering!!

valiumredhead · 05/11/2013 22:00

Cats-go to settings and you can turn off the sound so it's all silent.

How do you get your phone to speak to your huddle and did it involve passwords?

Iaintdunnuffink · 05/11/2013 22:50

Somewhere in your phone settings there should be an Internet Sharing or tethering option. It will give you a password that you can use when connecting a wifi only device.

We use this in Europe as it's often cheaper for us to use the phone data than pay to use campsite wifi charges. Every few days we turn on data for one phone and use that as a wifi hotspot for other devices. Beats the 5 euros, for one device, for one hour that one place wanted!

valiumredhead · 06/11/2013 07:48

If they 'speak to each other' what do they do? Run off onto the sunset and form a life long relationship?Wink
what info do they share?

valiumredhead · 06/11/2013 16:23

My phone is much much faster, the hudl is slow and a bit unresponsive so far. I do keep picking it up and stroking it thoughGrin

valiumredhead · 07/11/2013 18:53

My review-it's slow, keeps freezing and battery runs down super quickly. I downloaded 2 apps and ds played a game for about 20 mins and it needed charging.

The frozen screen is very annoying.

nkf · 07/11/2013 18:54

I am tempted, but I think they are not as great value as you might expect. There are other tablets around the same price or a bit extra.

nkf · 07/11/2013 18:56

Oooh, I forgot about Tesco vouchers. That changes everything. How many do you need?

valiumredhead · 07/11/2013 21:54

You need 60 vouchers to pay for it in full.

valiumredhead · 07/11/2013 22:20

aha! I've installed swipe and the mumsnet app and it seems better...

valiumredhead · 07/11/2013 22:45

got rid of swype as it said the app could access my pass words!

has anyone got rid of the noise of the keys? looks like I've list my capital letters too...

valiumredhead · 07/11/2013 22:46

I do realise this is turning into my own personal hudl therapy support threadWink Blush

Trills · 07/11/2013 22:47

That's a standard Google warning.

Anything that is a keyboard obviously CAN see your passwords, because you use it to type them.

So Google have to warn you, in case you have downloaded a dodgy keyboard that will pay attention to what you type in password fields, and then send it back and use it for nefarious purposes.

But Swype is a legitimate app made by a large and reliable company. It's not my keyboard of choice but it's not evil and it won't steal your passwords.

Trills · 07/11/2013 22:48

This is best free keyboard

valiumredhead · 07/11/2013 22:51

thanks trills, that's the keyboard that is already installed on the hudl but the noise is driving me bat shit crazyGrin

Trills · 07/11/2013 22:59

Phone Settings > Sounds > should be an option to disable key sounds?

Trills · 07/11/2013 23:01

Sorry, not phone tablet.

Or try tablet settings > Language and input
Next to where it says "Google keyboard", hit the image that looks like slidery things (it means settings) and untick the box by "sound on keypress"

Trills · 07/11/2013 23:02

There are lots of other keyboards out there (and you can try them on the Hudl, unlike the Kindle Fire which is locked down by Amazon).

valiumredhead · 07/11/2013 23:06

Yes! I've done it Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

valiumredhead · 07/11/2013 23:08

now to fix the auto capitals...

valiumredhead · 07/11/2013 23:12

fuck

see, I managed to unset 'block offensive words' OKGrin

armani · 08/11/2013 00:23

I would get them one each, a tablet is completely different to a laptop. we have 2 laptops, an iPad 2, kindle fire, nexus 7, iPhone 5 x2 and an ipod touch in our house and they are all used daily. due to dh being a techie geek and dd has SN

armani · 08/11/2013 00:24

well ive fucked that post up Blush !
