To buy us a Hudl each?

I have been hankering after a tablet of some description for a while so thought I'd investigate the Hudl. I didn't realise how cheap it was, and as it turns out I have enough Tesco vouchers to buy three of them.

I suggested to DH last night that it woudl be an ideal present for the older Dc (9 and 11), it woudl solve many fights over screen time (they are allowed an hour each on the family pc but it always causes rows). They would love it.

DH agrees that they woudl love it but is reluctant to buy them both one as my mum has promised to buy DS1 a laptop for his 12th birthday (next Sept). DH thinks that the tablet woudl therefore be surplus to requirements and a waste.

My arguments for this are:

-I have a netbook and still want a tablet, they have different applications. I wouldn't be comfortable with DS1 having his laptop in his messy bedroom, for eg, but he can take a Hudl up with him.

-Nine months is a huge amount of time when you're 11, and it's a bit shit to be told you can't have something because you're waiting for something almost-but-not-quite the same, amost a year away.

-If I have one and DD has one, DS1 will spend a huge amount of time asking to borrow them.

-I'd quite like the glory, tbh, after my Mum swooped in over a year ago and promised this fabled laptop Angry.

DH is happy to be convinced, and I'm still working on him. He doesn't 'get' stuff like this, he only has a very basic phone and only got a personal email address two years ago. He despairs at the fact that we have a pc, netbook, phone and kindle. Bizarrely, he's a software engineer.

I think this is a much better thing to buy than oodles of stuff that no one needs. I was quite excited at finding what is almost the perfect gift IMO, especially as it won;t cost anything.

I'd get the Hudls, especially as they are part of the Clubcard boost.

In our house we have 3 iPads and an iPad mini. I bought DH the iPad mini after he was adamant he didn't want an iPad, he was so stubborn he wouldn't even look at mine and the kids'. Since he has had it he hasn't put it down.

We, also, have 4 laptops and a netbook. Your DS will still need a laptop once he is at secondary school to do his homework, etc. Quite often my kids will google whatever they need on their iPads and refer to it while writing on their laptops, because it saves switching between pages and tabs.

lborolass · 03/11/2013 11:29

When you say you can get them with vouchers do you mean there's a special offer on or just that you can use vouchers in the normal way i.e £ for £.

You'd need to do a lot of shopping to buy one in full wouldn't you?

IamInvisible · 03/11/2013 11:35

You can double your vouchers at the moment lboro, and buy them. Some people save their vouchers, I do. I've had Blackberry phones for the kids for 'free' and my Dyson was 'free' last Christmas!

Right, I'm getting one !Grin

Sunnymeg · 03/11/2013 11:45

You should be able to get a Minecraft App from the playstore. It's not the full game, but DS is happy to play it. I did have to pay for it through.

JennySense · 03/11/2013 11:47

As an aside, if you have Talk Talk you can set up a filter for the internet via your account settings.
It's pretty robust - DH couldn't read the racing post online [gambling] and I've not been able to work out why a friends website [vintage stylist] and my favorite Parisian restaurant were also banned!
Our two [7 and 14] have been bought hudls with the tesco voucher deal from their grandparents.

ChippingInLovesAGoodBang · 03/11/2013 11:47

I'd buy all three, but I agree with your DH, your 11 year old doesn't need one, he's getting a laptop soon - so you can send the third one to me :)

Catsmamma · 03/11/2013 11:48

OOOh fruitybanana you are daring....asda shopping on your tesco hudl! :D

and iborolass the clubcard double up (or boost as it is now known) means any vouchers you have are worth 2x face value and you can use them for the hudl atm should you so wish
..it's all in the clubcard deals bit on line.

cryhavoc · 03/11/2013 12:52

I'm so glad I opened this thread. The five year old was going to get an iPad mini for Christmas. Now she'll be getting a hudl and I'll be £200 richer.

Summerblaze · 03/11/2013 12:59

I would buy one as you can't take a laptop to a party/restaurant/doctors appt or anywhere else that the dc's need to sit and be good for a while.

They have different things than a laptop too. Games are easier and cheaper to buy.

ChippingInLovesAGoodBang · 03/11/2013 13:21

catsmama I thought I would do that and get one really cheaply. I have about £3 in vouchers Grin Bugger.

bizzey · 03/11/2013 13:55

The tesco web page is saying it will be £60 with clubcard points ?? Is there a min/max usage on the points ...
After reading this thread (thank you OP for starting it !) if I bought one at full price or 2 how many points would that give me for a third ??

Don't shop there normally but have got a card with some points on

If this works I am sorted for Xmas Grin

difficultpickle · 03/11/2013 14:00

I would check that it can access the full range of Android apps. The Kindle Fire cannot as Amazon have restricted it. If I was going to buy another tablet that wasn't an Ipad I would get the Google Nexus.

SkinnybitchWannabe · 03/11/2013 14:06

I bought my 11 year old ds a laptop for his birthday (Oct) and because Im a Tesco employee I got a double discount week so I bought him and my 8 year old ds a Hudl for Christmas Grin only paid £100 for 2 and 2 cases because Id got some other vouchersI do.love a barhin
He uses his laptop at home, isnt allowed it in himsroom at night so the Hudl will be perfect for travelling etc.
So YANBU

SkinnybitchWannabe · 03/11/2013 14:07

bargain

cranberryorange · 03/11/2013 14:08

Bizzey

You can use as many vouchers as you want. It says I earnt 119 points for my purchase on the receipt even though i only topped up with 26.00 cash.

fuzzpig · 03/11/2013 14:14

I would.

I don't know what your mum is like for keeping promises of presents but my DSCs for example have been promised lots of items/experiences over the years from a particular family friend and they have NEVER followed it through Hmm so for that reason I wouldn't make a decision based on a hypothetical birthday present IYSWIM? Plus I agree the tablet is different anyway.

Buy them! :)

Trills · 03/11/2013 14:27

Go for it.

A tablet is not the same thing as a laptop.

Iaintdunnuffink · 03/11/2013 16:14

Go for it, as others have said a laptop and tablet are different enough. Tablets are great for long journeys & holidays.

difficultpickle · 03/11/2013 16:41

In that case it makes the Hudl look like a good buy. I got KF for £99 and it is rubbish. All it made me do was get an Ipad instead.

KeepingUpWithTheJonses · 03/11/2013 16:49

I've got hudls for Xmas for my 5 and 3 year olds. I completely dispute whoever said tablets were 'just for games' too. Both dc use tablets almost daily at school. They have a way if just engaging young children and can be very educational too.

GoldiChops · 03/11/2013 17:31

I've never even heard of this but it looks good. Anyone who has one- can you use Lovefilm on Hudl? I already have a subscription for my laptop and TV. Also, can you write on it? Is there any way of typing? I'm looking for an easier way to keep up with NaNoWriMo than luggin my laptop around with me!

valiumredhead · 03/11/2013 18:03

Just checked and with the boost I have 90 in vouchers, woo hooo!!!Grin

So now what? Do I need to send away for my vouchers as normal then pay the difference in store?Confused
