To buy us a Hudl each?

I have been hankering after a tablet of some description for a while so thought I'd investigate the Hudl. I didn't realise how cheap it was, and as it turns out I have enough Tesco vouchers to buy three of them.

I suggested to DH last night that it woudl be an ideal present for the older Dc (9 and 11), it woudl solve many fights over screen time (they are allowed an hour each on the family pc but it always causes rows). They would love it.

DH agrees that they woudl love it but is reluctant to buy them both one as my mum has promised to buy DS1 a laptop for his 12th birthday (next Sept). DH thinks that the tablet woudl therefore be surplus to requirements and a waste.

My arguments for this are:

-I have a netbook and still want a tablet, they have different applications. I wouldn't be comfortable with DS1 having his laptop in his messy bedroom, for eg, but he can take a Hudl up with him.

-Nine months is a huge amount of time when you're 11, and it's a bit shit to be told you can't have something because you're waiting for something almost-but-not-quite the same, amost a year away.

-If I have one and DD has one, DS1 will spend a huge amount of time asking to borrow them.

-I'd quite like the glory, tbh, after my Mum swooped in over a year ago and promised this fabled laptop Angry.

DH is happy to be convinced, and I'm still working on him. He doesn't 'get' stuff like this, he only has a very basic phone and only got a personal email address two years ago. He despairs at the fact that we have a pc, netbook, phone and kindle. Bizarrely, he's a software engineer.

I think this is a much better thing to buy than oodles of stuff that no one needs. I was quite excited at finding what is almost the perfect gift IMO, especially as it won;t cost anything.

Valium. go to the stores customer service desk and they will double up the vouchers for you or you can do it an the Tesco Direct website and get free click and collect

valiumredhead · 03/11/2013 18:31

Thank you skinny, so I take my vouchers in store, choose a hudl and they do the rest? Blush sorry, pretend your talking to a small childHmm Grin

ZombieMojaveWonderer · 03/11/2013 18:35

Apparently the apps are pointless, the camera is rubbish and the battery runs out really fast. I certainly wouldn't waste my money on one just because I has vouchers which make them cheaper. I think in this case you are better off spending more and getting something half decent.

valiumredhead · 03/11/2013 18:35

Normally I just get cinema vouchers so am clueless! Are they called 'in store vouchers' or something?

valiumredhead · 03/11/2013 18:36

Zombie, really? The reviews are good that I've read.

valiumredhead · 03/11/2013 18:37

I only want it for mumsnetting tbh, my phone is killing my eyesGrin

SleepyFish · 03/11/2013 18:43

Sorry to hi-jack but I wonder if someone can tell me what I need as I have been online reviewing tablets for 2 weeks and am more confused than ever.
I am a student and mainly need one to view power points (it's costing me a fortune to print them). I need to be able to add notes. The ability to type documents would be good too, although.my ancient laptop is ok for this. IPad is out due to cost and I'm thinking a 10" screen would suit me better.
Any suggestions welcome.
Sorry for the hi-jacking OP.

cranberryorange · 03/11/2013 18:49

valium you can use your vouchers online on the Tesco direct site.

Log in, put Hudl in basket, go to payment page which has your vouchers on, click the vouchers you want to use, Tesco double them automatically and voila, a very cheap top up using your debit/credit card!

Simples and delivery is free if you get it sent to your nearest store.

Glittertwins · 03/11/2013 18:52

the apps are standard Android from Google Play. Admittedly I prefer my Apple apps to my phone's Android but they are still decent

valiumredhead · 03/11/2013 18:52

Cranberry-thank you!Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks

Jellybellyrbest · 03/11/2013 19:01

Valium...I changed my vouchers to in-store ones & the damn things kept selling out before I got there!! At least if you order it online you"re sure to get one eventually. I finally got mine last night but it's still hidden in the box from the DC. I prefer not to let my DDs (6 & 8) on my macbookAir in case they damage it. Would also rather the item they use have the school-recommended websites/Apps & parental controls etc watertight. Even typos on google/YouTube (for Peppa clips!!) have produced dodgy enough websites when I've accidentally hit the wrong key so would rather just not risk it. I bought one with boost vouchers & now think I should really get them one each. Hmmmmm...
Enjoying this thread OP; we're Apple geeks in this house & I've never used Android so I'm hoping it'll be easy to master the Hudl.

valiumredhead · 03/11/2013 19:13

Oh good point, I'll order it on line and pick it up from our local store.

GoldiChops · 03/11/2013 19:16

Can you plug a little keyboard into it?

valiumredhead · 03/11/2013 19:19

How does it compare to a kindle fire, isn't that a tablet?Confused basically I'm asking if you can mumsnet on a kindle fire because that's all I'll use it forGrin

bizzey · 03/11/2013 19:35

Joining Vallium here ..as in pretend I am a child !! Grin

3 ds's so I will be getting 3 for xmas

I have £4.50/22 points (wohoo!)

So shall I buy one at full price...get points ...which then double to get 2'nd for less cash/real money ??

or buy 2 and end up with enough points to get 3rd free (sort of thing )

Not sure the best way to do this ?

And is general idea to do it on line in case shop have run out ?

JaquelineHyde · 03/11/2013 19:41

My two 8 year olds are getting one each for Christmas.

The first one has been ordered through Tesco Direct using my clubcard points and I'm just waiting for it to be delivered. The second one will be ordered in the next week or so just in case they sell out closer to Christmas.

Can't wait to see their faces on Christmas morning!

valiumredhead · 03/11/2013 19:52

Ooooo and because it's not an iPad I'll be able to Swype on it which is so much easier than tap tap tap...

bizzey · 03/11/2013 19:53

JaquelineHyde.....so how many points was that ....I am so thick !!

119 ??

JaquelineHyde · 03/11/2013 20:19

100 points = £1

So you would need 6000 clubcard points to get £60 worth of vouchers that you could then double up using the boost promotion and get your Hudl for free.

Catsmamma · 03/11/2013 20:32

You do have to wait til they send you your club card vouchers bizzie.... you cannot just redeem the points on your receipt like in Boots

... this message was brought to you using the Google fake Swype keyboard on my bargain Hudl

NettoSuperstar · 03/11/2013 20:38

I'm thinking of getting DD one of these and a laptop, and a new DS3D.
Oh and she already has two phones, a HTC and an Iphone.

They are used for different things.

valiumredhead · 03/11/2013 20:40
bizzey · 03/11/2013 20:46

Thank you Cats...Impresssive swiping !!

Well looks like I will just have to buy 3 with cash....and use all those lovely voucher points for ...WINE !!! Grin

Might be able to buy one in time !

newfavouritething · 03/11/2013 21:20

Have just bought 2 for the kids after dithering for days and then reading this thread. Quidco are giving 6% cashback on huddl, and there's also a special offer from Tesco of £10 off if you spend over about £125 (can't remember exactly, but it was more than the cost of one hudl). So if you have no clubcard vouchers to use, you can get 2 for £214.32 making them just over £107 each. And at the moment, the red, blue and purple ones are out of stock.

GoldiChops · 03/11/2013 21:38

Does anyone at all know if you can use lovefilm on a Hudl? I've been googling and just can't find an answer anywhere.
