Probation will run by SERCO or G4S if you don't get on board. Do you want that? Really? They can't even provide security for the Olympics! And they overcharged YOU tens of millions of pounds, by pretending dead prisoners were still on tag and collecting a fee for them. Or. Sometimes, they simply made the prisoners' names up and then collected a fee for them. That's just for starters.

If these clowns don't run it, some other unaccountable , faceless corporation will be in charge of the monitoring and rehabilitation of offenders. They will hold the safety of YOUR communities in their hands.

So. Sign it. It might even be too late. But we have to try. We simply cannot sit by and let a service which has evolved for over 100 years and is successful in reducing offending across the country be privatised and risk being run by profiteers.

Please let your families know too, and your friends, and colleagues at work. We have too far left to go yet to reach 100,000 signatures. And March 2014 when the petition ends, that's too late, it will be pretty much done by then, certainly harder to reverse this.

Just bumping this. I think it is really important that people can make an educated view.

Thanks anyfucker. It was discussed on question time, and the lack of real discussion showed how little people know about this, the impact of it or what probation do! None of the panel had much knowledge. Not even Failing Grayling cares. He left the Commons during a debate about the very 'transformation' he is proposing. He really does not give a toss about the impact of this. He doesn't want to hear it, the risk of harm to the public is irrelevant to him.

Just for the record here. The statistics that up to 80% of young men re-offend within a year of leaving prison is a red herring. Probation has never had the juristiction, the responsibility for work with this group of people. They do not have licence conditions unless they are a) under 21 (3 months, can't do much in that time, but it's better than nothing or b) have a prison sentence of 1 year or more. The stats are, as usual, fudged so that the public go '80%! really?! well, in that case probation is failing!' when the reality is, if probation were given the responsibility of that group of people, they would reduce their risk of re-offending.

Keep an eye out for, and support any probation staff you see on strike in your area next week - maybe take them a cuppa or a bit of cake or something

I don't know that much about it but I do think that certain things should never be privatised as surely the motivation changes from the benefit of society to profit. I just read about the G4S prison in South Africa too. Pretty horrific.

Am in UK and haven't a clue what this is about and dont really care either. My experience of anything g run by the public sector is that it is wasteful, bureaucratic and useless so the private sector can't do any worse

I think that fact that you don't care is worse than you touting your own political belief; not that you disagree with my view, but that you have no opinion whatsoever.
