to think my husband should not have just worked the extra hour for free?!!

My husband worked his night shift last night. He came home an hour later than usual. He said that because the clocks went forward during his shift then it is just tough. The next shift worker came in at 6am (which was 7 am in real time.) So this is so not fair.. the current shift worker will work 11hrs and get paid for 12 and my dh worked 13hrs and wil get paid for 12!! WTAF?????
He said he checked with his boss when I started saying that he should have come home if he wasn't getting paid.

It's one hour and will surely work the other way round in the spring, so I don't think it's worth kicking up a fuss about it.

There is a thread on chat similar, and those who work in the same circumstances don't get paid also unfortunately.

You get an hours TOIL at my workplace if you do the long night. Or a two hour break. You can't really start walking out of workplaces an hour early can you though?

I think you will find many people in this situation. I am on call all weekend and have had to do an extra hour too albeit i am not actually in work right now. I think it's just one of those things.

it will all even out as he will get paid for an hour he didnt work when the clocks go forward again (they went back last night). Surely the next shift worker will work his 12 hours as normal as the clocks changed at 2am in the morning.

My DH works shifts and its just tough shit basically. Hope your DH is working when clocks go forward and he'll get his hour back then.

Theres a million and one nurses who did a night shift last night, and will not get a penny for that hour.
But come the spring, they'll get paid for the hour they don't work.
Its a bit shit, but its the only way round it.
Did your dh and his team take longer breaks? Its one way round it...

Anyway , he's just worked a 13 hour shift... Let him sleep rather than getting angry with him for working his shift!

It's not for free though. It's made up in spring. DH works shifts and it's always been this way.

I really don't think it's wise to quibble over an hour - goodwill is important. Especially in the current jobs climate.

it he's hourly paid he should get paid for the hour. if salaried he won't.

I agree OP he should be paid per amount of hours worked not by the time on the clock.

Probably easier to ask for an hour TOIL though I would think. Depends on the situation at work really.

Also with shift patterns it's not a given he will work the night the clocks change in the summer.

Although everyone saying it will be made up in the spring - only if you are working the night shift in the spring too. DP has only ever worked the autumn change never the spring change - just the way the rota falls.

In a leap year most people will work an extra day in February 'for free'.

I think it's completely unfair too! This used to happen to me... all very easy to say you get it back when the clocks go forward but it's really not always the case. If you're a shift worker you won't necessarily be working a night shift when the clocks change again.

YABU. My brother worked a night shift last night and won't be paid for the extra hour. But in the spring he'll be paid for an hour he didn't work. Your DH is not unique in not being paid extra nor has he been treated unreasonably by his employers. Millions of shift workers are in the same position.

Honestly - you cannot go through life being this stressed about such little things. It is NORMAL to do what he did, and really - it's a single hour!

My DH is contracted to work 9 to 5.

He actually works from 8 to 7 because that's what is expected of him (work culture). He works 3 hours extra per day.

That's the equivalent of 97.5 days per year that he is working for free (780 hours).

I wish he got paid overtime, we'd be rich!

I wouldn't be encouraging your DH to go complaining to his boss over an hours pay, afterall there's plenty people out there who'd happily step into his shoes. If he had walked out early as you think he should have he may not have had a job to go back to.
