to think my husband should not have just worked the extra hour for free?!!

My husband worked his night shift last night. He came home an hour later than usual. He said that because the clocks went forward during his shift then it is just tough. The next shift worker came in at 6am (which was 7 am in real time.) So this is so not fair.. the current shift worker will work 11hrs and get paid for 12 and my dh worked 13hrs and wil get paid for 12!! WTAF?????
He said he checked with his boss when I started saying that he should have come home if he wasn't getting paid.

A lot if assumptions here that people will recoup it in Spring, that all depends on the rota!

NCISaddict · 27/10/2013 11:23

Bit lost as to what you mean HootShoot, could you explain?

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 27/10/2013 12:09

I'm a shift worker and have no idea what Hootshoot means ?

I definitely don't get paid for hours I haven't worked.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 27/10/2013 12:11

Actually it's more like I stay late and don't get paid for the extra hours I work. And I'm not allowed to take time owing.

BrandybuckCurdlesnoot · 27/10/2013 12:15

Exactly Screamqueen.

If you get paid hourly, you should be paid for the hours worked.

NotYoMomma · 27/10/2013 12:18

I think she means a lot of businesses knock off early on Christmas or New years eve so there is give and take

obv not in all businesses though

BrandybuckCurdlesnoot · 27/10/2013 12:20

I don't know of many shift workers knocking off early regularly anywhere. They work shifts to cover the needs of the business and normally have to wait to be relieved by a colleague.

HootShoot · 27/10/2013 13:18

Sorry - I've always worked in businesses where if you finish your work an hour or so early at Christmas you can leave as opposed to being given another assignment.

not2nitedarling · 27/10/2013 13:37

Thanks for all the responses..
Dh was moaning, rightly so, so I was trying to placate him by saying he should have refused to stay. I realise it was a stupid response but was really just a comment. My dd was up at 5am so she doesn't understand the whole Clocks forwards and backwards thing!! lol
I am very lucky to have a hard working husband who does 6 x 12hr shifts over the week(nights and days)
He doesn't often work the shift where the clocks go forward but like you all have pointed out that's just tough luck. He doesn't have any time off at xmas and has worked every xmas day since we had dd. Frustrating for both of us. He is paid hourly not a salary.
Again, thanks for all the replies.. was just wondering if this was a common problem and now I realise it is just a fact of the working life today, thanks again

All the shift workers I know get the pleasure of working Christmas day if rostered on, paramedics, police officers, nurses, care workers, doctors etc. No such thing as finishing early ever, unless you've done such a traumatic job that they send you home but that is virtually unheard of. We are certainly more likely to be late off. I wasn't working last night but I know many of my colleagues did a 14 hour + shift.

not2nitedarling · 27/10/2013 13:45

It's just one of those things isn't NCISaddict?

What does seem very unfair is all those christmas days. There is something I would nicely bring up with my boss if I was him!

not2nitedarling · 27/10/2013 18:22

I know Inkspellme..he is the only one with a little child too.. haven't spent an xmas day with him since we had dd who has just turned 4 x

Fucking hell if I demanded payment for every hour I have worked more than what I was contracted for I would be rich.

Loads of people do an extra hour here, an extra 20 minutes there or stay on when they have a project to finish.

Where has dedication and pride gone to these days?

DidoTheDodo · 27/10/2013 18:32

Just agreeing with all those who work far in excess of their contracted hours.

pixiepotter · 27/10/2013 18:35

It depends on the expectations of the job.If you are a salaried manager then doing extra hours is expected.
If you are hourly paid say in a supermarket of factory, then exttra hours should be paid.

Cocodale · 27/10/2013 18:41

I'm a nurse for a charity and we get paid for working the usual 9 hours and leave at 6 rather than 7 in the morning. Perhaps it's because we are bank, we certainly would never get that hour back again if we had worked it.

When they go forward we do the same work the normal 9 hour shift.
