to think my husband should not have just worked the extra hour for free?!!

My husband worked his night shift last night. He came home an hour later than usual. He said that because the clocks went forward during his shift then it is just tough. The next shift worker came in at 6am (which was 7 am in real time.) So this is so not fair.. the current shift worker will work 11hrs and get paid for 12 and my dh worked 13hrs and wil get paid for 12!! WTAF?????
He said he checked with his boss when I started saying that he should have come home if he wasn't getting paid.

If we're rostered on for the night the clocks go back we don't get paid for the extra hour, we're not always rostered on for the spring change so it doesn't get made up then.

Littlemissexpecting · 27/10/2013 08:33

Dh works shifts. He's currently on rest days but he worked it last year and didn't get paid for the hour.
Swings and roundabouts unfortunately, and he puts lots of extra hours in anyway for free. Comes with the job. In the current climate I'm glad we both have a stable one.

ilovesooty · 27/10/2013 08:41

You seriously said he should have come home if he wasn't getting paid? Do you have any understanding of the world of work?

CatAmongThePigeons · 27/10/2013 08:43

Over the course of 4years or so, depending on shift it evens out. Welcome to the world of shift work.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 27/10/2013 08:43

It's swings and roundabouts. Next spring he will benefit the other way.

The day shift still do the same amount of hours though.

I have done the long night but I've always missed the short nightHmm due to my shift patterns and taking leave.

Really, it's an hour, nothing to get fussed about!

Iamsparklyknickers · 27/10/2013 08:49

It does feel crap - been there done that and had an employer with the swings and roundabouts attitude.

I would think carefully about asking for TOIL or an extra hour to be paid (which would be a goodwill gesture as they don't have to) because if they do that it will have to work the other way in the spring and I'm presuming other people on the night shift may not thank him for that one.

Maybe he can just make sure he's on the spring shift.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 27/10/2013 08:53

You don't necessarily work the short night in the spring.

I'm a nurse and have done the long night with the unpaid extra hour lots of times. I have rarely worked the short night.

OrNot · 27/10/2013 08:54

The clocks went back last night, no extra hour was worked. Are they docking his wages for 1 less hour worked though?

SHRIIIEEEKFuckingBearBlood · 27/10/2013 08:55

OrNot I think you are a bit confused!

tallulah · 27/10/2013 08:57

Mine still isn't home, even though he is supposed to finish at 8am and has been told by the GP that he mustn't work more than his contractual hours for health reasons :(

He loses out when the clocks go forward as well because they make him do the full shift even though the clocks have changed. It drives me mad as well.

OrNot · 27/10/2013 08:58

Yeah i thought that as i posted SHRIIIEEEK! Excuse me whilst i go back to sleep.

Iamsparklyknickers · 27/10/2013 08:59

Ornot the clocks went back so anyone working last night worked from 1am-2am twice.

Iamsparklyknickers · 27/10/2013 09:00

Cross post! Sorry Ornot - it's that extra hour in bed throwing you off kilter isn't it Halloween Wink

SHRIIIEEEKFuckingBearBlood · 27/10/2013 09:01

:o
If that's an option you obviously don't have young children Envy

NotMeNotYouNotAnyone · 27/10/2013 09:01

I don't get why the next person is working 11 hours? Surely they will do 6-6 and their 12 hours as normal?

I agree that the next person will work 12 hours as normal as the clocks will have changed before they got to work

LovesBeingHereAgain · 27/10/2013 09:14

Quite normal

NotYoMomma · 27/10/2013 09:16

its an hour a YEAR

1 hour

if you piss and moan about it it will just look bad for future promotions etc etc

Rosa · 27/10/2013 09:18

Request to work the night of 30 March thus working 1 hr less and all will be balanced out....

SarahBumBarer · 27/10/2013 09:21

I started saying that he should have come home if he wasn't getting paid

Yes - it is definitely worth him getting sacked over (at worst) or looking like a pedantic jobsworth at best.

When I was doing paid by the hour jobs I used to get paid the extra hour. When you are on a fixed weekly/monthly salary you don't. Either way it evens out when the clocks spring forward.

And no - the next guy is not just working 11 hours. It is not 7 am in real time. It is now 6 am in real time.

It's one hour and not a big deal! YABU and an utter prat!

I feel like technically I should be reporting this post but what I actually want to do is "like" it Grin

frogwatcher42 · 27/10/2013 09:22

I wouldn't request anything - not extra pay or to be put on the March shift.

Do you realise how short good jobs are out there. Many many people would happily work the odd hour here and there for free. Both my dh and I do regularly.

Its the real life world of work imo.

WooWooOwl · 27/10/2013 09:24

I can see where you're coming from, but I don't think it's worth making a fuss over. Especially as you aren't the one that did the extra hour. Your DH did it, and if he wasn't bothered until you started fussing then it doesn't have to be an issue.

Lots of people work slightly more than they are actually being paid for, it's just part of being committed to your job.

simonthedog · 27/10/2013 09:24

I remember when DH was a junior doctor. They did a whole weekend on call, which involved a 56 hour shift which then became 57 hours when the clocks went back. This particular weekend he managed 4, 3hour sleeps during this time the rest was spent working!

ilovesooty · 27/10/2013 09:27

Perhaps your husband realises that if he acts like a spoilt child he's first in the queue for redundancy if that becomes an issue. You seem to have little awareness of that.
