to think Halal meat is cruel?

IAmMiranda · 04/10/2013 13:36

Bought a very nice panini today (bacon, brie and cranberry) from the local sandwich shop.

I didn't realise at the time that all the meat in that shop is Halal, which I am strongly opposed to.

Here is Wiki's description of Halal

^"Specifically, the slaughter must be performed by a Muslim, who must precede the slaughter by invoking the name of Allah, most commonly by saying "Bismillah" ("In the name of Allah") and then three times "Allahu akbar" (God is the greatest). Then, the animal must be slaughtered with a sharp knife by cutting the throat, windpipe and the blood vessels in the neck (while the animal is conscious), causing the animal’s death without cutting the spinal cord. Lastly, the blood from the veins must be drained."

AIBU to think this seems unnecessarily cruel?

(I realise the UK meat industry is far from perfect but this seems particularly nasty)

Out of interest, how is kosher meat slaughtered?

Tee2072 · 04/10/2013 14:17

It's actually more humane, if there is anything humane in wholesale animal slaughter, to do it Halal or Kosher. Cutting the juggler means death is in minutes.

But the wholesale slaughter of animals isn't nice or humane. It's just part of eating meat.

Tee2072 · 04/10/2013 14:18

The same way, throdorakiss.

Tee2072 · 04/10/2013 14:18

Sorry, Theodorakiss.

GoshAnneGorilla · 04/10/2013 14:18

Theo - there has been a glut of "Those Muslims..." threads lately.

TheSporkforeatingkyriarchy · 04/10/2013 14:21

Kosher slaughter is done the same as halal, the main difference is that in preparation, Kosher food has different restrictions on what can and cannot touch or be mixed with it than Halal.

Temple Gradin has does research on this, her main issue of cruelty was the animals being hung up to drain during or afterwards and reccommends equipment that can hold the animal up. This would be equally true for any type of slaughtering method.

Theodorakiss · 04/10/2013 14:24

Thanks, yes the Daily Mail have done a great job creating a division between vast sectors of the UK people. Bastards, I would Halal a DM journalist without a conscience...

nennypops · 04/10/2013 14:34

there has been a glut of "Those Muslims..." threads lately.

There has, hasn't there? And also a glut of seemingly artless inquiries as to whether something is really racist or just PCgornmad. Definitely beyond coincidence.

Dawndonnaagain · 04/10/2013 14:34

Nice one, Theodora Grin me too!

wigglesrock · 04/10/2013 14:42

I've had the delight of witnessing slaughters in a slaughter house - I'd go with halal everytime.

Opalite · 04/10/2013 14:46

YANBU to think it's cruel but I don't think it's much crueller than any meat... Animals being bred specifically to be murdered, living horrible, horrible lives and then being killed...

IamSlave · 04/10/2013 14:59

I saw a program about food standards and they went into a pizza shop and they were selling turkey or substitute pork products on say - ham and pineapple pizza but they didn't tell people.

So I think its highly likely same has occurred to OP.

IAmMiranda · 04/10/2013 15:08

Crikey, I didn't mean to rattle peoples cages.
I source my meat as ethically as possible (though clearly not in my choice of sandwich shop) so please stop painting all meat-eaters as heartless bastards.
I personally think that being a vegetarian can be extremely hypocritical if you also have dairy products, but thats a different thread. But I'd appreciate it if the veggies got down off their soap boxes.

I would rather be stunned than have my throat cut and be dangled upside down.

I don't give a damn about anyones religion, I'm not slating anyones religion here at all.

I said "AIBU to think Halal meat is cruel" not "AIBU to think that Muslims are cruel because of Halal meat".

I also think mass genocide is cruel, doesn't mean I have to mention when talking about Halal. I'm not saying Halal is the only cruel thing in our world.

Tee Cutting the juggler Grin. Your autocorrect has reminded me of that awful circus joke I last saw Peter Kay do.

Helpful thread contribution.

MrsSnow · 04/10/2013 15:13

Yawn OP.

I agree there have been far too many of 'those muslims...' posts. Quite dull and repetitive.

OP, you have the freedom of choice to purchase halal meat or not. Leave it at that. Obviously if you believed that you were buying something you believed to be pork which was mislabelled then you have a legitimate complaint.

Nonetheless as a muslim I should be able to buy halal meat, just as jews should be able to purchase kosher meat.

pixiepotter · 04/10/2013 15:58

If the animals are stunned then it is not Halal surely? Slaughter without stunning is cruel .It is condemned by the RCVS and should be illegal, full stop.

DoItTooJulia · 04/10/2013 15:59

Which vegetarians have been on their soap box OP?

raisah · 04/10/2013 16:08

The animals are killed in a similar way to the kosher method apart from the blessing in arabic. The blood is drained as consuming it is regarded as not very healthy due to the risk of intestinal worms etc.

You have to look at the meat production industry as a whole and question it as a whole rather than singling out the practice of one community, who don't have a good press record at the moment. The production of foi gras and veal is also highly question as is chicken battery farming & egg production.

BillyBanter · 04/10/2013 16:26

They should use muslamic rayguns. I hear they are very effective.

Yawn

Apologies to all who've probably said something similar as I've only skim read the thread.

Pre-stunning is permitted for Halal meat provided the pre-stunning does not kill the animal. The animal does not need to be conscious at he point of the knife cut simply alive (ponders how you would slaughter a dead animal Hmm).

AKissIsNotAContract · 04/10/2013 16:44

Panino - unless you bought more than one.

Varya · 04/10/2013 16:50

Why allow this barbaric practice in UK to pander to a minority? CRUEL beyond belief - I never want to eat Halal meat or meat at all, now.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 04/10/2013 16:58

Varya
What barbaric practice? Slaughter of a pre-stunned animal? I think you'll find that the UK was doing that already.

Please don't let the facts get in the way of your prejudice Hmm

Tee2072 · 04/10/2013 17:07

Grin TB. I didn't even notice until you pointed it out.

Yes yes yes, it's cruel to kill animals as food. No matter how you do it.
