About husband 'smoking' an e cigarette in the house?

Bejeena · 20/09/2013 16:56

Title says it all really! I have told my husband countless times that I am not happy with him smoking his e cigarette in the house? He says ok but then continues to do so when I am either in bed or out.

A bit of background, we have an 8 week old baby and my husband stopped smoking when we found out I was pregnant and I was rather proud of him (he didn't tell me he had quit until he was 90 days without a cigarette)

He never smoked normal cigarettes in the house before and I don't see why he should smoke this electronic one inside either.

His argument is that it is just water vapour!

I should add he is a great man and a fab Dad, I can't fault him on most things, apart from this.

Mehimand.

According to you, none smokers are people who use patches ect instead of smoking

Your still a smoker in your mind. Don't kid your self. Otherwise you would have a patch on, nicoretts ect

Or are they only smokers in the mind, what ever that may be.

As soon as a smoker decides to quit smoking cigarettes and does not smoke them any more they are a none smoker.

If anything only done in the mind actually counted I would have been locked up for what I did to Robbie Williams the other night and I would certainly need urgent medical treatment.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 21/09/2013 20:22

YABU and very unfair on your DP. He deserves a pat on the back and your support otherwise he may think 'why bother?' and revert back to smoking real cigs. Give hima break.

I vape, with a big black chunky thingummy, firstly for money reasons, but now of course I canclimb 2 flights of stairs a lot easier and don't rattle at night any more

however at work my colleague criticised e cig users - saying loads of people were using them in the pub Shock and I wouldn't dare get out my e cig in our office, I don't think she would like it.
the thing is - negatively while at home I vape a lot , at my laptop. more than I smoked and when I smoked I went outside, but I don't need to go outside anymore.
oth, I don't vape for say 5 mins that I smoked, I vape a couple of puffs, put it down, vape, put it down. and so on.

in fact I did use the smoking area at work but I don't like the smell now Grin plus I cant vape more than a couple of puffs before it hurts my throat.

op - your dh has done tremendously well, yabu, but perhaps suggest he could vape in another room to the baby?

ginmakesitallok · 21/09/2013 20:36

I wouldn't run over broken glass to get to a cigarette, so I'm a non smoker, phew!

The comparison between drinking alternative alcohol isn't a good one. Both drinks will cause harm to an alcoholic, vaping causes no harm to someone who likes nicotine.

AlannaPartridge · 21/09/2013 22:22

FFS.

Even though it's vapor it's still smoking

This kind of ludicrous comment is really making me cross Angry

When you're in the shower, and breathe in some of the steam, are you smoking??????

Vaping is NOT SMOKING because there's NO SMOKE.

I would have thought anybody could grasp this pretty obvious point. But evidently not.

gamerchick · 22/09/2013 10:42

I couldn't give a toss what it is.. It behaves like a real one does. You suck, it lights up and you blow 'smoke' out..so no it doesn't belong in the house imo.

AlannaPartridge · 22/09/2013 11:02

Can only reiterate what Wallinson said, because she's absolutely right.

Like I've said before, this kind of attitude is for me proof if proof were needed that a lot of anti-smoking rhetoric has nothing to do with health concerns and everything to do with wanting to control other people's behaviour

ginmakesitallok · 22/09/2013 19:03

Gamer, it's not smoke you blow out...... Gives up

gamerchick · 22/09/2013 19:08

I know that. It copies what a smoke does visually I really can't spell it out anymore.

Gives up.

Rachel778 · 22/09/2013 19:12

Have you heard yourself OP ?

Your Husband has done bloody well giving up like he did and if he wants an e cig in the house he should . . I assume it is his HOME too ? Your baby is 8 WEEKS old for gods sake, she won't know what her Dad is doing and when your Baby is older then I doubt your Husband will even have his e cig . I think you are very controlling.

Is someone who eats quorn sausages a meat eater?

KatyTheCleaningLady · 22/09/2013 19:45

This thread has made me want to try it. I am sick of smoking.

Which device is best?

nbee84 · 22/09/2013 19:59

This is an inexpensive battery to try. You may want to buy 2 so that you can have one on charge while you are using the other. You need to choose yourself some 'juice'. You may think you will want something close to what you smoke but may well find that you enjoy other flavours and go off tobacco flavours quite quickly.

RY4 is what a lot of people start with. A sweet tobacco/caramel taste. It's worth trying a fruit and a menthol juice (even if you can't stand menthol cigarettes a menthol vape is lovely)

You need to decide how many mg of nicotine you need. As a rough guide a 10 a day smoker would use 12mg, a 15-20 a day smoker 18mg, more than 20 a day 24mg.

Buy small bottles of juice until you know what you like.

Lots of friendly help can be found here.

Personally I would avoid 'ciagalikes' like elites and nicolites as they work out expensive, battery life is poor and the experience is nowhere near as good as battery with a clearomiser of juice on.

I bought the above thinking I would have a go and see if I could halve my cigarette habit and within 24 hours decided that I wouldn't have another cigarette - and haven't for 7 months today!

KatyTheCleaningLady · 22/09/2013 20:09

So I only need that £7 thing and some juice?

gamerchick · 22/09/2013 20:30

Anybody who eats quorn must have a cast iron gut. Puts me on the loo with the squits for days. 'orrible stuff!

KatyTheCleaningLady · 22/09/2013 20:33

Nbee I pm's you. Smile

Hawkmoon269 · 22/09/2013 20:40

Interesting thread...

As far as I know, all e cigs are currently unregulated and made in china. I worry about what really comes out in the vapour.

DH uses nicolites. If he's breathing in nicotine (and whatever else) then surely some of what he breathes in is exhaled into the room?

Main reason I'm anti e cigs indoors is because it normalises smoking. Hate the dc seeing their Dad smoke anything at all.

Anyone have any scientific answers a out what is exhaled? I'd feel happier if they were regulated...

SlobAtHome · 22/09/2013 20:45

Wow, YABU and harsh.

It's not going to affect your baby. I appreciate you've still got your new born baby crazy head on but you are being a bit daft about this.

He has done very well. Give him a break. :)

Wallison · 22/09/2013 20:47

It doesn't normalise smoking; it normalises vaping. Which normalises people breathing out water vapour. Woo.

gamerchick · 22/09/2013 20:50

Man people are possessive over their right to pretend smoke.

Hawkmoon269 · 22/09/2013 20:55

wallison I only know about the type of e cigs that look like cigarettes.

I'm a non smoker. But to me, they look like real cigarettes and I'm fairly sure small children don't understand the difference either.

I'm very proud of my dh for giving up smoking (just before we met). I absolutely hate smoking - paying a lot of money to smell horrid and reduce life expectancy (never seen the appeal!)

I just don't like anyone my dc know smoking around them (real or electronic). Just as I wouldn't like anyone they know being drunk around them. It's a terrible example.

Hawkmoon269 · 22/09/2013 20:57

Anyway, I'm not interested in debating (sorry, got sucked in).

I really want to know if anyone has any idea what really comes out in the "vapour"

Wallison · 22/09/2013 20:59

Actually, it seems more like you and others like you are possessive over their supposed 'right' to tick people off, even when they are doing something that is not dangerous or illegal, which doesn't harm you in the slightest and which has no impact on your life whatsoever, beyond the fact that you don't want them to do it. Have a word with yourself, eh?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/09/2013 21:07

This has been a really interesting thread and has really made me think.

I don't like e-cigs

After much thought I have to come to the conclusion that I don't approve of addictions, especially not flaunted in public. I guess it normalises that its OK to be addicted to a substance.

On the other hand they are far better than traditional smoking though. But they, or at least the liquid, does need to be regulated same as any other drug/ingested substance. Otherwise you just can't be sure what you are getting, and in an unregulated market you can be sure that some suppliers will be cutting corners.
