About husband 'smoking' an e cigarette in the house?

Bejeena · 20/09/2013 16:56

Title says it all really! I have told my husband countless times that I am not happy with him smoking his e cigarette in the house? He says ok but then continues to do so when I am either in bed or out.

A bit of background, we have an 8 week old baby and my husband stopped smoking when we found out I was pregnant and I was rather proud of him (he didn't tell me he had quit until he was 90 days without a cigarette)

He never smoked normal cigarettes in the house before and I don't see why he should smoke this electronic one inside either.

His argument is that it is just water vapour!

I should add he is a great man and a fab Dad, I can't fault him on most things, apart from this.

Have Wetherspoon's really banned e-cigs because of their nicotine content?

I suspect they've banned them in case it affects their family trade.

I never want to go back to fags.

I prefer the e-cig. Vaping is much more enjoyable than proper ciggies.

You couldn't pay me to go back now and I used to smoke 40 a day.

I am addicted to nicotine, which is no more harmful than caffeine. It's not a big deal. I vape low nic and don't plan to stop as I enjoy vaping.

Some comments I have seen on this thread - and have heard in real life, come from people that have given up smoking in ways without using ecigs.

"I think about cigarettes every day"
"Just give up totally, I've been nicotine free for a year but still think about it every day"
"I gave up 5 years ago but would still love a smoke"

I gave up smoking using an ecig 7 months ago - yes, I'm still addicted to nicotine but it's no worse for you than caffeine. But I definitely don't think about or miss cigarettes on a daily/weekly/monthly basis. In fact I hate the taste of tobacco and vape fruity/dessert flavours. If someone offered me £100 to go and have a cigarette now my reply would be "No way!" I can't imagine smoking a cigarette again and an ecig is the only method of giving up that has worked for me.

ginmakesitallok I am not convinced that e-cigs are any better at producing long tern quits than traditional NRT. i suppose for me the jury is well and truly out. I am happy to embrace the e-cig that stops people putting 40 carcinogens into their bodies and I do have concerns that medical regulation of e-cigs will drastically reduce their appeal. They will become another unsexy NRT product

I am also deeply concerned that some of the first regulated e-cig products will be manufactured by Big Tobacco, so they will have effectively sewn up both the smokers and the quitters markets...

Woodchuck have you ever smoked? Don't mean that to be as snarky as it probably sounds - genuine question. Have you?

There is a massive difference between traditional NRT products and E-cigs - and it's a difference that makes ALL the difference. E-cigs feel like smoking. It's not identical, but it's not far off.

None of the NRT stuff does, at all. If it did, I'd have been using them years ago.

There are two issues here - giving up nicotine & giving up smoking.

Nicotine is not particularly harmful in low does - it's very similar to caffeine in it's affects on humans. So, while an E-cig will do nothing to stop nicotine addiction, many people are now asking whether that really matters much in the scheme of things.

The harmful thing about smoking is the smoke, it's never been the nicotine. Also - the ACT of smoking is, at least psychologically, as addictive as the nicotine. Drawing in the "smoke" is a very hard thing to give up.

With an E-cig I get the feel of smoking and the bit of nicotine without the harm of the smoke. This is a good, good, good thing.

I genuinely struggle to see why people do get that. Non-smokers, rightly worried about passive smoking, ought to be rejoicing.

I do concur about using them around children though. I have a 17 year old and won't vape around him because of the issue of "normalisation". But I can sit in my bedroom vaping to my heart's content :)

What are the best e-cigs? You've got me quite interested. Does it really feel like smoking?

I didn't expect it to, themaltese but yes. You get that hit at the back of the throat and you blow out the vapour. It tastes a bit different & that took a day or two to get used to but no longer than that. They feel heavier in your hand so you do tend to hold them slightly differently so the experience is not completely identical, but close enough.

I use E-Lite and I swear I haven't wanted a cigarette or even thought about them since I started using it. And I was quite a heavy smoker (roll ups).

Best thing I ever did :)

I mostly use an ego battery with a clearomiser. Beats cig lookalikes hands down imo.

YANBU. Not read the thread so apols if repeating, but it risks normalising the smoking. If he used to nip outside for a couple of crafty puffs of an evening, you really don't want him sitting chaining away on the vapey thing all evening, in case he gets too used to it. (Case in point -- vapey friend vapes in cinema now, where previously she's have been cig-free.) That said, he's quit, so tread carefully!

I still maintain there isn't enough known about side affects. There hasn't been a wide scale study.

Until there is, I wouldn't allow anyone to use an e cigarette near my baby.

The ones that look like cigs are no where near as good IMO.

I think yabu it's harmless to you and your child so what's the problem?

Imo they should be allowed to smoke them in public ,on a train or in a cafe/pub as 1.its legal
2.doesn't harm those around them.
The whole reason smoking is banned
Is to discourage from passive smoking.

I love vaping and I do it in the house without a second thought. It is NOT smoking and it is not even remotely comparable to smoking. I think as a society we've just been so thoroughly conditioned now to despise smoking that the mere appearance of somebody holding an object, inhaling and exhaling, triggers irrational hostility.

To respond to another point:

Go back to smoking? Good god, no. Why would I? I've got something infinitely better. It tastes good, doesn't smell, doesn't harm me or anybody else. It's a pleasure, not an addiction. When I smoked, I was keenly aware of the addiction: I disliked the taste and the array of unpleasant side-effects, disliked the cost, disliked standing outside in all weathers, disliked having to make emergency trips to the shops just to buy the stuff because I was going to run out, but I was compelled to do it anyway.

Vaping is another story entirely. I can and do go for whole days without vaping if I'm doing something where it would be inconvenient, or if my battery has run out, or it randomly stops working. These situations are not a problem - I don't think about it, I don't panic, I just get on with my day. It's a pleasure, like a nice cup of coffee. I like to get in my PJs in the evening and vape a bit of Mint Candy whilst watching TV. That's it.

I haven't smoked since the beginning of April, and I never will again. Even if the idiots and money-grubbers of the world succeed in banning vaping or regulating the life out of it.

It really pees me off that something that is so effective at freeing people from the horrible smoking addiction - way more effective, in my experience, than any other method - is now being demonised by people who don't know what they're talking about. I think this article by Lionel Shriver has hit the nail squarely on the head:

Spot on

I can't stand smoking. Don't even like walking through it when they all congregate outside shop entrances or bus stops.
However, I really can't see the problem with puffing out water vapour?! Confused
It doesn't smell, there's no passive smoking chemicals to breathe in....

I smoked 20 a day for about 35 years. I have now given up for nearly a year by vaping. My health is much better, my lung capacity has increased & (unlike when I tried to quit cold turkey) I now loathe the smell of cigarettes & can not contemplate the thought of ever smoking one again.

I think they are a very good thing if they help people give up smoking real fags but they are a bit of a distraction. One girl in our tiny office has decided to start smoking it at work. I didn't even know she smoked but I do now as she is constantly puffing away at her ecig. It's like the 1970's except less smelly.

I was on a night out with an eciger recently and the casual smokers who could usually go without rather than go outside were getting pissed off as everytime she started up they would get all antsy and nip outside for a fag. So they ended up smoking way more.
Smoking can be as much about habit and cues as it is addiction.

I've given up smoking loads of times using lozenges but always end up back on the fags. I've been vaping since the start of April and can honestly say that I will never smoke another cigarette.

don't know if the vapour is dangerous or not but I think they should be treated the same as the real things simply because we have managed to change the law to protect non smokers and no one smokes in public places indoors any more, surely allowing these just undermines the law as it looks like people are smoking, especially the ones designed to look like cigs. we were getting used to not seeing cigs indoors these bring it back into public arena again. more worrying is that as yet they are unlicenced and therefore unregulated.

Report
QueenStromba · 21/09/2013 16:34

You may as well argue that soft drinks should have been banned during American prohibition because a coke looks just like a vodka and coke.

We are never going back to smoking indoors. Most smokers wouldn't even want it now that they're used to pubs etc not reeking of a million stale fags.

FWIW, I only really vape in places that you could smoke in until the smoking ban came in. The only exceptions to this are train platforms, train carriages/busses where nobody is sitting near me and in my flat.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 21/09/2013 16:38

plus the trend for young people who never smoked taking up e cigs, nicotine is a drug and is addictive, it may not be harmful to health without the fag smoke (as far as we know) but it does make someone dependent on a nicotine hit on a regular basis. not really a place to be but certainly better than cigs for those intending on breaking the habit. I just don't want smoking indoors (whatever is being 'smoked') to become ok again.
