About husband 'smoking' an e cigarette in the house?

Bejeena · 20/09/2013 16:56

Title says it all really! I have told my husband countless times that I am not happy with him smoking his e cigarette in the house? He says ok but then continues to do so when I am either in bed or out.

A bit of background, we have an 8 week old baby and my husband stopped smoking when we found out I was pregnant and I was rather proud of him (he didn't tell me he had quit until he was 90 days without a cigarette)

He never smoked normal cigarettes in the house before and I don't see why he should smoke this electronic one inside either.

His argument is that it is just water vapour!

I should add he is a great man and a fab Dad, I can't fault him on most things, apart from this.

This morning, just out of curiosity, I smoked a ciggie. It tasted as gross as ever (not worse than it did, but I never thought they tasted good.) I will say that the feel of it in my hand was familiarly nice. But it wasn't enjoyable, so I stubbed it out after only a couple of puffs.

I think it's likely I'll bum one outside a pub some night, and if I got stuck without my vape, I would maybe smoke... but I don't really think I'll smoke again.

Unless these things are made illegal and I backslide some years down the line.

I quit fifteen weeks ago by using a battery powered atomiser (looks like a magic wand). Best thing I ever did. Feeling the benefits in spades in both my purse and my health. I've already stepped down 2 strengths with the aim being to be vaping nic-free liquid by the new year (zero harmful chemicals, about as dangerous as standing in the shower or near a kettle).
FWIW the Cherry menthol and Aniseed are my current favourites.
The initial outlay was around £40 with one bottle of liquid a week costing £4.99. Compared to £70 a week on cigarettes i'm quids in!

Let the ill-informed squawk away I say. Their opinions matter not one jot to me.

Well done Katy and Rachel - it's good, innit Grin

If you can manage 2 weeks without smoking a cigarette (which I found easy) if you then have one, or a drag from someone else's be warned that it will taste rank! I did this and it was like tipping a dirty old ashtray full of butts into my mouth - just the memory of it makes my stomach turn! I can't believe I smoked the things for nearly 30 years.

I really hate the smell of smoke, at the time and on people's clothes. I tihnk eCigs are the best thing ever and I am completely delighted to think there is something that might work to help lots and lots of smokers become vaporisers instead Grin.

In your shoes I would be over the moon that he has done so well not that i would have married a smoker to start with and if I did there would be no babies as he wouldnt get any sex and I would only stipulate that he mustnt ever vaporise where the DC can see him do it. Assume he will feel the same way- presumably he wishes now he never started and will want his PFB not to make the same mistake?

I think you are being over-protective which is normal with a new baby, but it is in this case a big mistake, as I agree with all those who say going ourdoors will drive him back to real fags.

Great! I sort of miss... something... about ciggies, but I'm not sure what. t's just a vague sense that something is missing, but it's very faint. I have ciggies. I can go smoke one right now. I don't quite want to do that, either.

Alanna - try //www.liberty-flights.co.uk. They do Starter Kits of the cig, then you can choose your own liquid. I use RY4 as it is most like tobacco - I'm not too keen on the flavoured liquids.

I read this thread last night and bought a starter kit. I can't wait for it to arrive.

By the way... for those who worry about possible traces of chemicals in the vapour... it can't be worse than the nasties on the hands and clothing of smokers when they come back indoors.

Vaping should be encouraged. Regulating for quality wouldn't hurt, but we should be acceptiing.

I'm a non smoker and I think it's great that with vaping people can get the benefits of smoking without the costs...and one in the eye for the evil tobacco companies.

From the Lionel Shriver article linked to upthread:

the UK, whose politicians talk righteously, but whose coffers benefit from a whopping £9bn annually in tobacco taxes, dwarfing the £2.7bn smokers cost the NHS each year. (Yet because smokers die seven to 10 years younger, and place little demand on the service once dead, smoking may actually save the NHS money.) If all British smokers switched to e-cigs overnight, the Treasury would be traumatised. The government will never admit to banning e-cigs because it needs the taxes it rakes in from you killing yourself, but watch this space

Alanna your tastebuds do tend to change over time. I started off on tobacco flavours and don't like them now. I hated cherry but like most of the other fruit flavours. Menthol is good to clear your tastebuds and you can mix it with fruit flaviours you're not keen on.

Currently I like coffee, chocolate, banana, vanilla, Red Bull...that sort of thing.

NestofVapoors nice drip tips. Have made an order.

Alanna, I totally recommend moving on from elites to a refillable. It can be very good fun. Try cherry, ry4, menthol liquids for starters. And if you are feeling experimental and flush you could look at sites like this for so-called gourmet liquids. Choose one of the 510 threaded kits (like this sort of thing if you want a slimish model similar in feel to your elites or the bargainatious ego nbee84 linked to if you think you might prefer a fatter model. If you get a 510 model you can experiment with all sorts of different mouthpieces and accessories if you feel the need later on!

Fellow vapers - I've been using E-Lites, but after hearing from you I quite fancy the flavoured types now.

Recommendations?

Anyone's entitled to have, or not have, whatever they like in their own home. Just trying to answer your question, which was perfectly legitimate.

I think the case in point for this particular thread is whether the OP is really justified in "banning" her DH from vaping in HIS own home. I don't think she is.

An article with some research findings here. Clearly written by a pro-vaper but relatively balanced.

nbee84 thank you
alanna I take your point but I choose not to allow yet more chemicals into my home. I try to minimise the crap air where I can.

Dc aside, I don't want to passively "smoke" ANY chemicals, I really do want to know. So, anyone?

But you do, all the time. That's a consequence of modern living - it's a question of balance.

Nicotine is largely absorbed into the vapers body, which is the whole point of vaping at all. There may be some tiny amount exhaled - but compare that with the nicotine you eat in vegetables & the amount that's used in pesticides.

All the chemicals used in vaping have applications, in similar amounts, elsewhere and you WILL have come into contact with them without knowing.

Hawk - just off to bed so don't have time for a comprehensive reply but this lists what is in ejuice - I seem to remember reading at some point that because the nicotine (which is addictive, but no more harmful than caffeine) is in liquid form over 95% of it is absorbed by the lining of the mouth before being taken into the lungs and that only trace amounts could be detected in the vapour blown out.

Ok, please someone answer me this...

When you inhale vapour/smoke/whatever from an e cig, you inhale nicotine and other chemicals.

When you breathe out, aren't some of these chemicals breathed out too?

That's what I want to find out. I now that only 20% of the chemicals in normal cigarettes have an odour. I'm wondering what gets exhaled into the house from e cigarettes.

Dc aside, I don't want to passively "smoke" ANY chemicals, I really do want to know. So, anyone?
