About husband 'smoking' an e cigarette in the house?

Bejeena · 20/09/2013 16:56

Title says it all really! I have told my husband countless times that I am not happy with him smoking his e cigarette in the house? He says ok but then continues to do so when I am either in bed or out.

A bit of background, we have an 8 week old baby and my husband stopped smoking when we found out I was pregnant and I was rather proud of him (he didn't tell me he had quit until he was 90 days without a cigarette)

He never smoked normal cigarettes in the house before and I don't see why he should smoke this electronic one inside either.

His argument is that it is just water vapour!

I should add he is a great man and a fab Dad, I can't fault him on most things, apart from this.

But Sidge, cigarettes smell and taste horrible (and kill you), I'm still addicted to nicotine, but it tastes fab, doesn't stink and isn't killing me. The only reason I could ever see myself going back to tobacco would be if ecigs become so over regulated that I can no longer get them.

Aintnobody, he HAS stopped smoking!

"I've seen highly addicted social workers puffing away constantly at their desks when previously they would have had to wait for a non existent free moment or when they leave the office."

Do I work with you, Ehric?!

signed a highly addicted social worker!

Because as long as you take nicotine you are keeping the receptors in the brain 'switched on' to craving nicotine. Quitting properly involves weaning off nicotine so they 'switch off'. It just makes it easier in the long term to stop cravings and reduce the likelihood of smoking again

Yes, that's true - it is more likely that you'll go back to cigarettes than if you stop altogether.

But you can still stop smoking forever if you only use E-cigs.

p.s. I am biased as I love vaping inside and out but I do think you are being unreasonable, Bejeena, because 1. there really is no reason to believe that 2nd hand vaping steam is dangerous and 2. you and the baby are not even there to witness or be harmed by the almost certainly non-dangerous 2nd hand vaping steam!

I work in public health (does that qualify my statement? Not sure...!) and will reinforce that nothing we know about ecigs indicates they are dangerous. i also don't believe they are a true 'stop smoking' device, as people who use them rarely cut down and quit, and many of them do return to smoking.

I do agree with all of the posters who have recommended you lay off your DH. Quitting smoking is very difficult. he has done so for the health and happiness of you and your baby and should be commended and supported.
And actually, another point, yes, he is still addicted to nicotine (no harm done there, nicotine is proven to have no harmful effects in studies of 5 years and beyond)but sending him outside to 'smoke' his ecig is actually only going to reinforce his old smoking behaviour. Then, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the association between going out for a fag and the ecig triggers the old habitual need for a 'REAL' cigarette, and before you know it, he may be back on the smoking wagon. We always recommend people change their habits. the ones who steadfastly accompany their mates on a 'fag break' at work, or head out to the beer garden with an inhalator, are most likely to relapse. the best thing your dh can do is replace all the old smoking behaviours.

I would be concerned about long term use, though. Most people who use ecigs are still using them (and may also smoke cigarettes) 1 year later. Could you support your DH to try an inhalator or other nicotine replacement with a view to cutting down and stopping using nicotine altogether? if this is not something he is interested in, i would just count my blessings. My Dh smoked, and tried EVERYTHING to give up, to the point where I worried it would be a deal-breaker in our marriage. he managed to quit in the end, using Champix and says now he had to be ready to do it for himself. you are lucky that your dh has managed to quit in a relatively painless way.

have you heck gin your just tricking your self in to holding and inhaling a cigarette substitute.

You could easily start again as you still need the nicotine.

Ultimately I had to go cold turkey as when my battery ran out while I was out I just bought cigs.

But if e-cigs are safe (and I accept that this is yet to be confirmed by robust research) does it matter if you remain addicted to them?

My dh smoked 20 a day for the best part of 30 years up until Boxing Day last year when he switched over to an electronic one. I'm tremendously proud of him and to be honest couldn't give a flying fuck where he smokes his electronic one. I'm just glad he's given up tobacco.

I think YABU.

Woodchuck, very good post. However, there is evidence that (although not marketed as a smoking cessation aid) e-cigs are more effective in terms of supporting people to stop smoking than traditional nrt. Working in public health you will be well aware of the failure rate of traditional smoking cessation services. I work with but not in public health.

Mehimetc, you're wrong. A couple of weeks ago I had to spend a couple of days in hospital with dd. when I was a smoker I would have had to go for a fix. I didn't have my ecig with me, I coped fine. I enjoy my ecig, I didn't enjoy smoking.

I totally agree that since E-cigs don't break the nicotine addiction, then the risk of smoking again is high - much higher than stopping altogether. And I suppose some dumb people will go back to fags - or even smoke both.

I can't imagine that I ever will - seriously. It's considerably cheaper, doesn't stink me and my home out, turn my teeth and fingers yellow or pose as much of a threat to my health.

But you CAN stop smoking altogether if you stick to E-cigs, since that is not smoking. Doesn't necessarily mean that absolutely everyone will, of course.

And if nicotine is not especially harmful, then why shouldn't I keep vaping forever?

Given that 96% of people who try to stop smoking are back smoking after 1 year I'm happy to take my chances with my e cig

When I went into hospital recently I was asked if I smoked. I said that I used an ecig. They said that defined me as a non smoker.

My GP is pleased I've given up cigarettes and told me he was happy enough for me to carry on vaping.

alana but your keeping the nicotine addiction chugging away. So u never really stop 'smoking* as your inhaling and holding a fake fag.
Just give up totally, I've been nicotine free for a year but still think about it every day. My cats bum mouth is MILES better though!

I couldn't agree more.

They're banned at my work but it doesn't worry me as I didn't smoke at work anyway.

Ecig users are vaping. They are not smoking.

Sorry, Mehim but that is not smoking anymore than sucking an inhalator is. There's no "smoke" for a start!

Thanks for the advice - but happy with my E-cig. The cats bum is a consideration though!

Tell you what I have noticed - how much cleaner my skin is. When I use a wipe on my face before bed, it comes off clean, was grey before. Yuck! I must have looked minging.

That's your choice. Others choose differently.

I like vaping. I don't see any harm in it. I think I actually vape less than I smoked because you don't have a whole cigarette to smoke at once.

And I work on the 4th floor of a tall building. When I smoked I struggled to get up the stairs when the lift broke down. I manage it much more easily now.

According to the NHS website, it won't known of they are 'safe' or not.

www.nhs.uk/news/2013/06June/Pages/e-cigarettes-and-vaping.aspx

They are considerably safer than cigarettes but I certainly wouldn't want anyone in my house using one, especially with a new baby.

I don't get the objections to ecigs.

People can put what they like in their bodies. My only objection to smoking was the second hand smoke.

Chug away eciggers, can't see how it is any different to a cup of coffee/tea or a glass of wine.

Have Wetherspoon's really banned e-cigs because of their nicotine content?

They should probably start strip searching customers too, make sure they don't have nicotine patches on. Get some chemical testing kits to check customers really are chewing Wrigley's Extra and not Nicorette. Twats.
