Inspired by the HW thread, I have been thinking about this for a while.

Arthur works for the MoM so wont be on a pittance as a head of department, even a minor one as there would surely be grades?

They eat massive amounts of expensive food having three courses at every dinner, cooked breakfast every day. When they win a load of money, instead of saving it in the knowledge that they have 4 kids still at school they blow the lot on a holiday of a month in Egypt! At the beginning of CoS Mrs W takes some silver sickles and ONE gold galleon from their vault, and then happily blows 1000 galleons on a holiday rather than see them financially secure for the next few years.

Seems to me that the reason their kids are in second hand robes and reading second hand books is because they are shit with money, not that they dont have enough.

Books.....They have to have a new Miranda Goshawk book each year, so when F&G have finished with them they could have passed one to Ron who passed it to Ginny and the older ones shared the remainder if they needed it, which is unlikely. Why have several unused copies of the same book in the family and still buy another one for the youngest student? Same with robes. Rons dress robes are second hand, but Mrs W says that Arthur has some for parties so why not lend him those (with some magically performed alternations if needed) rather than pod out for horrible second hand ones? Actually, thinking further, Mrs W is supposed to be a whizz at household stuff so why doesnt she transfigure the second hand stuff to look better?

They just throw good money after bad!

I got Luna Lovegood Smile
Matches my personality quite well.

People generally do not take her seriously because she has a tendency to spout strange, uncommon ideas off the top of her head, but Luna is the type of individual who doesn?t care much about impressing others.
And that explains why I don't do so well on the school run. Blush

Sparklymommy · 03/09/2013 11:47

I'm a Lupin too! (Secretly wants to be Bellatrix).

Molly and Arthur are lovely people. Shit with money but happy with their lot. More people should be like them!

Bogeyface · 03/09/2013 11:59

I think that house elves are probably considered an asset by the owning family and can be sold. :( I would imagine that they would be expensive to buy, something that Hermione would go ape about if she knew.

I think that Hogwarts is state run, so funded by the MoM with extras paid for from donations and trusts from alumni.

I must let dd know how well the quiz she found has gone down on Mnet. DD has managed to hijack a thread without even being a Mnetter - but she is an avid HP fan.

badtime · 03/09/2013 12:19

I'm Hermione. It's hardly surprising since I am an abrasive know-all in real life, but I would have preferred McGonagall, for the gravitas.

DashingRedhead · 03/09/2013 13:18

House elves go with the house and whoever inherits; I don't think they can be sold, although Harry inherits Kreecher along with all Sirius's other 'posessions'.

CambridgeBlue · 03/09/2013 13:48

Thanks for the link to the Hogwarts thread. I can't get the quiz to work though! I click on 'Expecto Patronum' and nothing happens - what am I doing wrong? I'm desperate to find out who I am!

Glitterspy · 03/09/2013 13:56

Sorryif this has already been mentioned but Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration prevents the Weasleys "just magicing themselves up some new gear"!!

MischiefManaged · 03/09/2013 14:02

I'm Bellatrix! ha
I got Crookshanks the first time round so tried to be more decisive in my answers on second run.

Impulsive than cautious
Immature than mature
Arrogant than modest
Weird than normal
Extroverted than introverted

AintNobodyGotTimeFurThat · 03/09/2013 14:47

Re taking the test when not half asleep. :)

Seems to get me to Lupin.

Hmmmm only one dynamic changed whether I was extroverted or introverted.

Interesting though.

Glad I'm no longer Molly. Have some similar values but eh, not her biggest fan.

Pachacuti · 03/09/2013 15:46

Only if clothing is the much-speculated-about fifth exemption to Gamp's Law., Glitterspy. It would make sense if it is, of course.

Glitterspy · 03/09/2013 16:30

Pachacuti Could be - but then wouldn't all wizards use the 5th exemption to make themselves rich rich rich?

Pachacuti · 03/09/2013 17:33

It's the things that are exemptions to Gamp's Law that can't just be created out of thin air we are told that there are five exemptions, but the only one that we are specifically told about is food. It's likely, from the events around Order of The Phoenix (and the fact that no one does magic up huge piles of cash) that money/gold/riches is another. Various essays on the Internet speculate on the precise nature of the other three exemptions given that the Weasleys live in second-hand outdated clothes it's probable that that is indeed one of them. But it's being an exemption to Gamp's Law that stops [whatever] being magicked up, not Gamp's Law itself.

Bogeyface · 03/09/2013 17:46

JK says that things conjured up out of thin air dont last as they have no substance, so you can change things, increase them, reduce them and summon them but not create them.

I would think then that that is why they buy second hand clothes and books but surely they could be transfigured into new looking clothes and books?

I'm McGonagall! Very happy with that. I'm not aware of any backstory though, so off to google now...

AthelstaneTheUnready · 03/09/2013 21:05

I'm Hagrid, Mrs. Just us so far though. Wanna see a spider?

BellaTheGooseIsDead · 03/09/2013 21:11

O.T but I could use some help please:

Following the Studio tour, DS' preference for a bedtime story is the life and times of Lord Voldemort. I think he likes him because the soulless baby was one of the only interactive bits. He is very into monsters and is fascinated by him.

Anyway - I have been focussing on the fairy-tale aspects, the poor boy who was unloved and who made all the wrong choices and the the love Lily had for Harry which was so powerful it defeated death.

Now DS insists that The Dark Lord returns again so I am having to explain horcruxes to an autistic six year old. In an age-appropriate manner Hmm An obsession with cycles is very characteristic of how his autism manifests.

I can't help thinking that if he had the benefit of a few years of a traditional Catholic education that this would possibly be a bit easier Grin

Any advice?

mrsjay · 03/09/2013 21:23

Dunno really *Bella^ dd heroinne is belltrixlastrange and she has an affliation to slitherin Confused

mrsjay · 03/09/2013 21:24

Athelstane Hagrid is an all round good egg Grin

Bellebelle · 03/09/2013 21:32

I'm Snape! DH is surprised that I'm surprised Hmm

BellaTheGooseIsDead · 03/09/2013 21:34

I like Bellatrix (should tinker with my name really) for the very shallow reason that she is beautiful, has lots of curly hair and wonderful costumes.

DS is definitely a Griffindor though so it's a bit odd. Perhaps he is just working through his fears.
