Inspired by the HW thread, I have been thinking about this for a while.

Arthur works for the MoM so wont be on a pittance as a head of department, even a minor one as there would surely be grades?

They eat massive amounts of expensive food having three courses at every dinner, cooked breakfast every day. When they win a load of money, instead of saving it in the knowledge that they have 4 kids still at school they blow the lot on a holiday of a month in Egypt! At the beginning of CoS Mrs W takes some silver sickles and ONE gold galleon from their vault, and then happily blows 1000 galleons on a holiday rather than see them financially secure for the next few years.

Seems to me that the reason their kids are in second hand robes and reading second hand books is because they are shit with money, not that they dont have enough.

Books.....They have to have a new Miranda Goshawk book each year, so when F&G have finished with them they could have passed one to Ron who passed it to Ginny and the older ones shared the remainder if they needed it, which is unlikely. Why have several unused copies of the same book in the family and still buy another one for the youngest student? Same with robes. Rons dress robes are second hand, but Mrs W says that Arthur has some for parties so why not lend him those (with some magically performed alternations if needed) rather than pod out for horrible second hand ones? Actually, thinking further, Mrs W is supposed to be a whizz at household stuff so why doesnt she transfigure the second hand stuff to look better?

They just throw good money after bad!

And having watched CoS today with DC, i wondered why doesn't hogwarts have any spare wands (like spare pants in primaries!) - Ron can't be the first student to break his wand?

Bogeyface · 02/09/2013 23:50

Very good point MissB

Its like coming in without your PE kit, you have to ferret about in the lost property box and make do :o

And thinking further.....Rons wand was second hand but Ollivander says that the wand chooses the wizard. That would explain why Rons magic in the first year was a bit crap ("Its not Wingardium LeviOsar") and improved afterwards. Perhaps that hit his confidence which is why he didnt perform as well as his talented older brothers even when he did have a wand that chose him.

My result:

You are Molly Weasley, mother of seven children and wife of Arthur Weasley. As the caretaker of so many children, Molly is headstrong, defensive, and caring. She is fiercely loyal to her family and friends, always attending to others? needs before her own. She can get a little hotheaded at times, especially when somebody breaks her rules. Otherwise, she is practically a saint. You are similar to Molly in the sense that both of you are devoted to your loved ones more than anything else. It is likely that you have your own set of morals and that you have a very clear definition of what is right and what is wrong. People who do not share your views will often get the cold shoulder, but you try your best not to judge too much. As long as you are treated with respect, you welcome new friends into your life with open arms. The one thing that breaks you is stress; it can sometimes turn you into a completely different person. You always realize your mistakes, though, and apologize for any rudeness displayed. No one would ever call you thoughtless or discourteous, and they'd be wrong if they did! On top of being kind-hearted, you are extremely protective, often sticking up for your loved ones more than they even want you to. They may never tell you how much they value you, but you should know that your friendship is truly irreplaceable.

On the test :o

WandaDoff · 03/09/2013 00:50

I am Voldemort. Mwahahahahaha

slapandpickle · 03/09/2013 05:13

I'm Hermione :D

CambridgeBlue · 03/09/2013 07:00

Marking place so I can do the test when I'm not supposed to be getting out of bed and making packed lunches.

Great thread, I'm re-reading all the HPs at the moment (half way through GofF). Wonder why everyone's suddenly into it again - is it because the films were on?

CambridgeBlue · 03/09/2013 07:06

PS can anyone link to the HW (Hogwarts?) thread that's mentioned and any others I've missed? Pesky school holidays interfering with my MN time :)

I'm Lupin! Happy with that, I like him.

PenguinBear · 03/09/2013 07:35

Quite possibly Bogeyface. I think Ron would be so desperate for his children to not feel like he did that he would give them anything they ask for. I dont think Rose would be too affected by this as she is probably very like her mother. Though I think Hugo would cash in on his dad's generosity and be rather spoilt by Ron, owning the best and latest of everything even if he didn't really want it.

LondonMother · 03/09/2013 08:08

I'm McGonagall too and I am delighted!

?We teachers are rather good at magic, you know.?

You are Minerva McGonagall, the Transfiguration professor at Hogwarts and Headmistress in Dumbledore?s absence. Professor McGonagall is rational, high-strung, and somewhat overbearing. She is quick to state her opinions, but does so in a sharp and subtle way. Like most distinguished women, she can be snooty and critical towards other people, frequently using logic as a way of deducing those around her. This characteristic isn?t so surprising; being older and more experienced causes her to take a leadership role in almost any given situation, and many look to her for guidance because of this. You and McGonagall are similar in the sense that both of you are a bit uptight and set in your ways. You are unafraid of hurting others? feelings, but it would be wrong to say that you are coldhearted. Reserved is a better word. Most of the time you come off as frigid and distant, even when you?re in a good mood. It is likely that a strict upbringing infused those traits within you, causing you to become a disciplinarian. Your detached personality often confuses people into thinking that you are a total drag, but they just need to appeal to your good side before they can see it. Not everyone is worthy anyway.

In short, you are more:

Cautious than impulsive

Mature than immature

Arrogant than modest

Normal than weird

Extroverted than introverted

Your polar opposite is Peter Pettigrew.

ithaka · 03/09/2013 08:11

I am Ginny Weasley! I am particularly delighted that my polar opposite is Dolores Umbridge.

Plus - I get to marry the hero preens

BlackBorderBinLiner · 03/09/2013 08:24

Another Dobby here, who'd want to date a house elf?

BruthasTortoise · 03/09/2013 08:59

I'm Hermione. I thought I was cooler than that Smile

BoffinMum · 03/09/2013 09:07

If Molly Weasley got a job instead of being a SAHM and loafing about, they wouldn't be in such financial straits. After all, all her kids are at school.

Snazzyenjoyingsummer · 03/09/2013 09:14

would love to have been Hermione Envy

Beastofburden · 03/09/2013 09:15

Boffin, nobody flamed me when I said that upthread! I think its because they are all at boarding school perhaps a little class envy creeping in but there is a theory its a big house and someone needs to be there to cast the spells all day. Dont buy it, myself.

mrsjay · 03/09/2013 09:18

I think Molly is some sort of tea witch and makes the tea and cake for all the other far more important people, Hmm what page is the quiz on

AnyoneButLulu · 03/09/2013 09:19

I thought about those threads too Boff, when I made that very same point, but surely even the most frothing of flames wouldn't say it was unreasonable to expect a mother of teenagers who were all at boarding school to get a job? Surely? Surely?

Pachacuti · 03/09/2013 09:20

I rather like merrymouse's affecting portrait of Molly as a small businesswoman struggling to get her woolly jumper business off the ground only to have it all ripped from under her by the return of the Dark Lord.

mrsjay · 03/09/2013 09:21

maybe they are just eccentric aristo's and mr weasly is just playing at a job and they are loaded and when they die they will leave all their money to cats Grin

Weasleyismyking · 03/09/2013 10:39

I'm Ginny Weasley. My username feels a bit weird now... Blush

motherinferior · 03/09/2013 10:58

WRT funding I reckon it's like statementing and you can get local authority assistance for a place.

Molly ought to get some of those damn sexist blokes she lives with to do a bit more of the housework.

MinnieBar · 03/09/2013 11:43

Another Lupin here!

I never understood why Molly says they can't afford a house elf when the annoying poor blighters don't even get paid. What's that all about then??

Agree with the bad financial management - she makes them a jumper each for Christmas, and even if she were using the cheapest granny acrylic available, for seven kids and Harry that wouldn't be a 'cheap' present?
